The Familiar, the Unfamiliar, and the Data to Prove it
As you continue to take stock of your team, you might be on the hunt for some power and run production. There are plenty of under 50% rostered players, or Tersh that will provide some pop and plate some runs if you are lacking in those particular categories. Often times the two categories go hand in hand. We will be taking a look at some power hitting Tersh we know well and some who are are beginning to make a name for themselves...
Solid Power Numbers with the Metrics to Prove it
Curtis Mead, 1B,2B,3B (29% Rostered on Yahoo): Managers are finally beginning to take notice of the former top prospect. His Statcast page is pretty bloody and the production is catching up. On the season Mead has 17 HR and 44 RBI. He has been on fire with 3 HR in the past week. He is barreling balls at close to 12%, has a Hard Hit Percentage above the coveted 42% threshold, and bats in the top four of baseball's best lineup so far. I'm looking for a huge second half from Mead, and I expect it to get off to a great start with 3 games @Sacramento, 3 @ Coors, and a trip home for 3 vs Arizona.
Kody Clemens, 1B,2B,OF (48% Rostered on Yahoo): I touched on Clemens as a target for Runs but he also a legit power threat and has the metrics to support what we have been seeing thus far, even if we did not expect it. He has 16 HR and 46 RBI on the season, including 6 HR and 21 RBI in the past month. Another player who is barreling balls (12.7%) and hitting them hard (46%), he should not be on your league's wire anymore, especially given the position flexibility.
Spencer Torkelson, 1B (43% Rostered on Yahoo): A familiar source of power, Tork will provide steady pop, but it comes at the expense of the batting average. If you are hurting in HR and RBI, consider adding the former top pick, but surround him with some guys that hit for average. Torkelson has 16 HR and 43 RBI on the season, following up his 31 HR season a year ago. The barrel percentage of 14.4 (89th percentile) and hard hit percentage of 44% will play, and shows that continued production should be there on a team that has started to hit more in recent weeks.
Jake Burger, 1B (24% Rostered on Yahoo): Sticking with hard hitting, bopping first basemen, Burger has had a nice rebound season. He has 16 HR and 58 RBI on the season, batting mostly third through fifth in the lineup on a daily basis. He barrels (10.4%), he hits hard (46%), and he pulls. All things we like from power sources. He is known to go on some epic heaters as well, so a 30 HR 100 RBI season is definitely in play.
Dominic Canzone, OF (16% Rostered on Yahoo): I honestly don't know why this guy is not rostered more. 16% is ridiculous, especially considering his playing time has increased as he has started to play regularly vs LHP. The surface stats are there as he has 15 HR and 40 RBI, and the metrics say he will continue to rake. His Statcast page is silly, as his xSLG is 95th percentile, his barrel percentage is 92nd percentile, and his hard hit percentage is 84th percentile. All of these numbers are through the roof, and you'd have to expect the team around him to start hitting better, so the RBI numbers should start to take off.
Steady Vets Providing Production
- Joc Pederson, DH (3% Rostered on Yahoo): Typically rakes vs RHP. Has 15 HR and 34 RBI in platoon role. 7 HR over the last 30 days.
- Josh Bell, 1B (25% Rostered on Yahoo): 13 HR and 60 RBI on the season. Yes, that's 60. Hits in the heart of a great lineup.
- Ryan Jeffers, C (31% Rostered on Yahoo): 7 HR and 28 RBI in only 130 at bats. What? And from a catcher? Grab him and prorate the numbers.
- Ezequiel Duran, 1B,2B,3B,SS,OF (39% Rostered on Yahoo): 50 RBI on the season and eligible basically everywhere. Sneaky power with 10 HR as well.
- Alec Bohm, 1B,3B (40% Rostered on Yahoo): 47 RBI on the season, which paces out to close to 90 on the season. When the average goes up, the RBI will continue to increase. 11 HR on the season as well.
Sneaky Surprises
- Mauricio Dubon, 2B,3B,SS,OF (49% Rostered on Yahoo): Picked up in the offseason as a utility fill in, Dubon is on pace for 18 HR and 91 RBI. He has been a steady force in the Braves lineup and always seems to get big hits.
- JJ Bleday, OF (27% Rostered on Yahoo): He has broken out, faded, and is now breaking out again. Had 3 HR and 6 RBI in the week leading into the All Star Break, and has 16 HR and 43 RBI on the season, with solid metrics.
- Heriberto Hernandez, OF (6% Rostered on Yahoo): I love this kid. Has a barrel percentage of 11.9%, hard hit percentage of about 50%, and has 13 HR and 36 RBI in about 200 ABs, The Statcast page looks awesome and I expect a big second half, especially with Owen Caissie (who would be on this list) out for a few weeks.
- Griffin Conine,OF (1% Rostered on Yahoo): Recently returned from injury. In only 79 at bats, has 5 HR and 12 RBI and a Statcast page that shows a monster second half could be on the horizon, with a barrel percentage of 13.5% and hard hit percentage of a ridiculous 52%. It's coming!
- Heliot Ramos, OF (46% Rostered on Yahoo): The surface stats don't scream power boost in a category league, but the look under the hood screams, "IT'S COMING!!!!" The 96th percentile barrel percentage and 91st percentile hard hit percentage is what I am looking at, so don't be surprised if those 8 HR climb rapidly in the final months of the season.
