Bullpen Notes🗒️(9/12)

COL: Juan Mejia allowed the first two to reach in the 5th with the score tied at 4-4. He would get out of the inning and return for the 6th where he walked the first two. Brennan Bernardino got out of the 6th without allowing any runs and returned for the 7th. He would let a couple on but got out of that as well and since they had a 6-4 lead he picked up a hold. Jaden Hill started the 8th with a 7-4 lead. He faced five batters and didn't get an out. All five would come around to score two while he was in the game and the rest while Romano was in. Jordan Romano did come on with the bases loaded and the score 7-6. He walked the first two batters he faced. He would also allow a sac fly and a two run scoring triple. Romano was charged with two runs of his own and a blown save while Hill picked up the loss. Romano and Bernardino are the only two pro level pitchers in the bullpen and today the other guys cost them the game. Romano remains the a very risky closer to roster due to games like today and limited chances.

DET: Tyler Kinley got a couple outs in the 5th but returned for the 6th and let a couple on. Drew Sommers would come in and allow both runners to score which put them down 6-4. Sommers would return for the 7th and allow a single while getting an out. Beau Brieske got out of the 7th and allowed a solo dong to start the 8th but he would pick up the win after they rallied. With an 11-7 lead in the 9th Kenley Jansen pitched and hit a batter but allowed no one else to reach. Kenley is the closer and the only guy worth rostering in this bullpen.

PIT: Gregory Soto pitched the 8th with a 3-2 lead and it didn't go well. He allowed a lead off double and got a couple outs but then the wheels fell off. Hit batter, walk, walk that scored a run, and hit batter that put them down one. He was charged with a blown save and a loss. Unclear why they went with him over Weaver but PCA was up third in the inning so they must have wanted that matchup to be lefty, lefty. Monty is the closer and Weaver is the 8th inning man.

CHC: Jacob Webb came in with two outs in the 6th, the bases loaded, and the team down 3-2. He was able to get the final out. He would pitch the 7th as well and allow a lead off walk. Ryan Rolison pitched a perfect 8th and returned for the 9th. He would allow a lead off single but got a couple outs. He did face two guys who they wanted to hit left handed. Ryan Zeferjahn came in and got the final out of the game on a strikeout. Zef got the save and Rolison got the win. This team has turned into a committee to a degree though I still think Webb is the closer. They just used him in as big spot today which isn't new. Zef has is the next best guy to roster and offers the most value for holds.

TOR: Bullpen game with Spencer Miles and Joe Mantiply pitching the first three scoreless innings. Spencer Arrighetti did the bulk work and got the win. Mason Fluharty got out of the 6th and allowed a lead off single in the 7th while getting an out. Paul Sewald would come in and allow a two run dong that made it 6-3. He would get out of the inning. Tyler Rogers pitched the 8th with a 7-3 lead. With a 7-3 lead in the 9th they used Louis Varland and he allowed a runner to reach on an error but nothing else. Rogers and Varland remain the only guys worth rostering since they use Miles at all points in the game.

LAA: Blake Weiman pitched the 7th and 8th with the team down. They would take a 5-4 lead and turn to Ben Joyce in the 9th. He walked the lead off hitter who would get to third after a wild throw on a steal of second and score on a single. Joyce was charged with a blown save. Jose Fermin got an out in the 10th before allowing the ghost runner and picked up the loss. Joyce is the closer despite some recent struggles. Natera also hasn't been great so there is no one really pushing him for the job.

WSN: Brad Lord pitched the 8th with a 4-0 lead and allowed three runs. They went with Will Dion in the 9th and he walked the lead off batter and allowed a double to blow the save. He would also allow a sac fly that put them down 5-4. Jack Sinclair got the final out of the 9th and pitched the 10th. He kept the ghost runner from scoring and picked up the win. There is no closer in this bullpen. They sent Beeter down yesterday and Tolman got the last save. I would think that Tomlan sees the next chance but really it could be anyone. Avoid this bullpen.

SFG: Joel Kuhnel got the final out of the 5th and a couple in the 6th but allowed a solo homer. They were down in both innings and Reiver Sanmartin got the final out of the 6th. Jason Foley pitched the 7th and allowed an unearned run. Dylan Smith had the 8th and he allowed a two out walk. Carson Seymour pitched the 9th and he let a couple on but didn't allow any runs. Smith hadn't pitched for four days so this was certainly a usage day. As for his role as the closer I think that is still in question with Trent Harris likely being in the mix. Since they aren't playing for anything I could see both getting chances the rest of the way but I still prefer Smith.

SDP: Bradgley Rodriguez started the 8th with a 7-3 lead and faced three batters. He allowed three runs and two dongs. They brought in Adrian Morejon with Devers coming up and he got out of the inning to keep the lead at 7-6. Morejon picked up a hold. Mason Miller had the 9th and struck out the side to pick up the save. These are the three guys to roster in the bullpen and despite the rough outing for Rodriguez they all still offer great value for saves and holds.

BOS: Garrett Whitlock pitched the 8th and picked up a hold since the score was 4-1. They would tack on a run and use Aroldis Chapman in the 9th. He allowed a lead off walk but no runs. These are the two main guys in the 8th and 9th and should be rostered if you need holds and saves.

MIA: Cade Gibson got the final out of the 4th and pitched a perfect 5th. He ended up picking up the win as they had a 4-3 lead. Tyler Zuber walked a guy in the 6th with a 4-2 lead and picked up a hold. Calvin Faucher allowed a one out single in the 7th and picked up a hold. Michael Petersen pitched a perfect 8th and picked up a hold. Pete Fairbanks had the 9th and allowed a two out walk that would come around to score but he got the final out and picked up the save. It was his first appearance since returning from the IL. This is how I would expect the bullpen to set up with Petersen as 8th inning man and Fairbanks as the closer.

MIN: Andrew Morris got two outs in the 6th with a 4-3 lead. He would return for the 7th and get an out. Kody Funderburk came in and got the last two outs of the 7th and both guys picked up saves. Jeff Hoffman allowed a one out walk in the 8th but picked up the hold. A.J. Minter was called upon with a 4-3 lead in the 9th against the bottom of the order and he was perfect picking up the save. This is interesting as they only had one lefty coming up and Minter had blown the game yesterday in the 7th. It appears that Gomez wasn't available after yesterdays meltdown and I still think he is the best option for saves but Minter who I have been recommending for holds is an option if they make a move.

TBR: Tyler Wells pitched the 7th with the score tied at 2-2. He allowed a two out walk but would pick up the win. Ty Johnson started the 8th and walked the lead off batter before getting a couple outs. He would pick up a hold. They brought in Bryan Baker to get the final out of the 8th which he did after allowing an infield single. He would return for the 9th and pitch a perfect inning. He picked up save number 40. Baker is the closer and Kelly and Wells remain the best options for holds.

CIN: Graham Ashcraft came in for the bottom of the 5th with the team down 8-5. He would get mauled allowing five runs while getting one out. Pierce Johnson got out of the inning. Tony Santillan, Tejay Antone, and Emilio Pagán got the final nine outs without allowing any one to reach but the damage was already done. Pagán and maybe Burke are the only guys worth rostering in the bullpen.

MIL: Chad Patrick got an out in the 4th and pitched the 5th to pick up win. DL Hall and Antonio Senzatela pitched the 6th and 7th. They had a big lead and tried to use Kyle Harrison in the 8th but he struggled and didn't get an out while facing four batters. They had a 13-5 lead at the start of the inning but they had to use Aaron Ashby to finish the inning. Harrison was charged with four runs. Abner Uribe pitched the 9th with a 13-9 lead and allowed a couple on with two outs but none of them scored.

PHI: Bullpen game which saw Tim Mayza start and pitch the first three innings. He didn't allow a run. Things fell apart in the 4th when Brooks Raley allowed three runs while getting two outs. Grant Holman would come in and allow five more runs all that were unearned. Raley ended up taking the loss. They also used Orion Kerkering for an inning plus and he gave up an unearned run. Ugly game and I wouldn't roster anyone who pitched today.

STL: Cooper Hjerpe allowed a run in the 4th and returned for the 5th. He would walking a run after loading the bases. Luis Gastelum came in and allowed three of Hjerpe's runs to score. He was charged with a blown save and he returned for the 6th to get the first out of the inning. With the game tied at 4-4 Justin Bruihl, Ryne Stanek, and George Soriano got the game to the 9th inning without allowing any runs. Riley O'Brien came on for the 9th after they took a 5-4 lead. He allowed a lead off walk, got a couple outs, and allowed a two run dong that put them down. He was charged with a blown save and a loss. At this point ROB probably shouldn't be closing but they really don't have a great option to take over. I can't recommend Stanek or Soriano they have been just as bad.

CWS: Sean Newcomb started and was charged with a run in the 2nd. Luis Castillo was the bulk guy and he would be charged with three runs. Hagen Smith pitched a perfect 5th and 6th with the score tied at 4-4. They went with Grant Taylor in the 7th and he allowed a walk. He would return for the 8th and allow a lead off dong. After getting two outs he let two on and was pulled for Jordan Hicks who walked the bases loaded before getting the final out. Hicks would pick up the win. Bryan Hudson had the 9th and he was perfect picking up the save. As I have been saying Taylor and Hudson are the main options for the 9th. When Taylor pitches in the 7th Hudson gets the chance if he hasn't already pitched.
