Bullpen Notes🗒️(8/29)
BOS: They activated Garrett Whitlock for the double header today and he pitched the 8th inning of game one and picked up a hold. Tyron Guerrero pitched the 7th and picked up a hold as well. Game two saw Brayan Bello and Raymond Burgos give up 9 runs. Whitlock returns to the 8th and is one of the best guys in the league for holds. Miller is probably the next best option for holds.
NYY: They didn't use anyone of importance in game one. In game two Paul Blackburn had the 6th picking up a win, Tim Hill had the 7th picking up a hold, and Brent Headrick had the 8th picking up a hold but allowing a run. Blackburn and Headrick remain the guys to roster for holds.
LAD: With the score 1-1 Seth Halvorsen pitched the 6th, Alex Vesia had the 7th, and Edgardo Henriquez pitched the 8th. Jack Dreyer came on for the 9th with the game still tied and gave up a lead off double before eventually loading the bases and allowing a run. Not much has changed and I think Vesia is the best option for holds and Scott is the closer.
DET: Tyler Holton got a couple outs in the 6th after loading the bases to keep the game tied at 1-1. Andrew Sears would get all the way to the 9th inning and with two outs he was pulled for Kenley Jansen who picked up the win by getting the final out. Holton is the guy for holds and Kenley is the closer.
MIN: Andrew Morris pitched the 6th with the score 2-2 and allowed a solo homer. He would return and pitch a perfect 7th but ended up with the loss. A.J. Minter had the 8th and Yoendrys Gomez pitched the 9th. Minter is the best option for holds and Gomez is the closer.
CWS: Today it was Sean Newcomb's turn to pitch the 6th, 7th, and 8th. He allowed a couple hits with one out in the 6th but got the next seven outs and picked up the win. Bryan Hudson had the 9th for the second night in a row and he picked up the save. He was perfect in the 9th. Hudson appears to be the 9th inning man when they use Taylor prior and today it made sense since Taylor had gotten eight outs yesterday. I would roster Taylor for saves but Hudson does appear to have some momentum and value late in the game.
PIT: Sort of a bullpen game with Mlodzinski acting as the bulk guy. With a 5-2 lead in the 7th they used Soto who allowed a lead off double but no runs. In the 8th Weaver was perfect and they both picked up holds. They would tack on a run so when Monty pitched a perfect 9th it was not in a save situation. This is what the bullpen should look like with a lead and that means Monty is the closer with Weaver in the 8th as the best option for holds. Soto still has value for holds since he will pitch late and is a lefty.
CIN: It was a blowout but Tony Santillan took another beating in the 7th. He would end up allowing four runs. At this point he either isn't healthy or might just suck but he should not be rostered. Feels like he might be heading back to the IL soon in my opinion.
SEA: Eduard Bazardo came on in the 5th with one out, two on, and a 3-0 lead. He would walk the bases loaded and walk another batter where two runs score one a wild pitch. Both runs were charged to the starter. In the 6th Jose A. Ferrer struggled with walks and would allow two runs while being charged with a blown save and a loss. Carlos Vargas got the final 7 outs of the game with the team down 4-3. Bazardo is still the best option here for holds but he has struggled like the rest of the bullpen.
TOR: Tyler Rogers got the first two outs in the 8th with a 4-3 lead before walking a batter and being replaced by Mason Fluharty. He would allow a single and but get out of the inning and both guys would pick up holds. Louis Varland was perfect in the 9th and picked up the save. Varland and Rogers are the guys to roster but Fluharty could be a deeper option for holds as well.
MIA: Josh Ekness got two outs in the 8th and three outs in the 9th without allowing a baserunner and the game tied at 4-4. Michael Petersen loaded the bases in the bottom of the 10th before allowing the ghost runner to score and take the loss. Ekness is in the mix late with Faucher. Those are the two guys I would target for saves. My pick is Ekness but neither guy has won the role yet. Petersen seems more like the 8th inning holds option.
WSN: Tom Cosgrove started the 7th with a 4-0 lead. He would get two quick outs before allowing the next three to reach and two scored. Brad Lord came in and gave up a two run dong that tied the game. Cosgrove was charged with three runs and Lord one. Lord would continue to pitch though the 9th though he picked up a blown save for that homer in the 7th. Orlando Ribalta pitched the 10th and kept the ghost runner from scoring while he picked up the win. Beeter is the best option for saves but Ribalta has pitched in big spots as well. I wouldn't roster anyone from this team.
COL: Jimmy Herget pitched pretty well getting five outs in the 6th and 7th. Juan Mejia would get the final out of the 7th with a runner on third and a 1-0 lead. He would return for the 8th and get two quick outs before allowing as two singles and a two run double. He was charged with a blown save and the loss. After another walk Jordan Romano got the final out of the inning. He is the closer and the only guy I would roster here though Brennan Bernardino is a deep guy for holds.
ATL: Another day where they were able to stay away from the main guys. Brent Suter would end up with the win after he got the final out of the 6th and pitched the 7th and 8th. They took the lead in the bottom of the 8th and went with Didier Fuentes in the 9th. He allowed a couple guys to reach but got the job done picking up the save. The main guys have been used quite often so it was not surprising to see Iggy get the night off after a save. Fuentes has some value as a deep holds option and he is probably the next up for the 9th with Suarez out.
NYM: Daniel Duarte pitched the 8th with a 4-1 lead and allowed a solo homer. They tacked on a couple runs but still used Kodai Senga in the 9th and he allowed a lead off double but no runs. I'm surprised Senga went back to back and he will be off tomorrow but he remains the closer. Duarte is a solid holds option.
SDP: With the game tied at 3-3 in the 6th after the starter allowed a solo dong Kyle Hart got the next three outs. With a 6-3 Bradgley Rodriguez would start the 7th but was unable to get an out while facing four batters. There was and error that allowed three runs to score and Morejon came in. He would allow one more run that was charged to Rodriguez before getting out of the inning. With the team down 7-6 Yuki Matsui pitched the 8th. Bradgley Rodriguez has struggled a bit in big spots so he is just a fringe holds guy. Morejon is the guy you want to roster if you are looking for holds.
TBR: With the game tied at 3-3 in the 7th Garrett Cleavinger loaded the bases before getting an out. Kevin Kelly would come in and allow a two run single and a guy stole home. He would walk a couple more but get out of the inning. All three of the runs were charged to Cleavinger. Kelly would return for the 8th with a 7-6 lead and pitch a perfect inning. He picked up a win. Bryan Baker pitched the 9th against the meat of the order and allowed a one out walk but no runs. He is the closer and Kelly is the guy to roster for holds.
MIL: Chad Patrick was perfect in the 6th and 7th pitching with a 3-1 lead. He would return for the 8th with a 5-1 lead and get an out before allowing a two run dong. Antonio Senzatela came in and got the final two out and both guys picked up holds. Trevor Megill pitched a perfect 9th and picked up the save. Like I said last night Uribe and Romero are almost back so that will pretty much kill the guys who pitched todays holds value.
ATH: Jose Suarez who returned from the IL pitched an allowed a couple runs in the 6th. Luis Medina had the 7th and Scott Blewett had the 8th with the team down. Down 4-3 in the 9th Elvis Alvarado allowed a run on due to an error. That runner would score on a wild pitch so the run was unearned. Harris and Alvarado are both pitching in save situations and you could roster both. Alvarado seems to have the slight edge for the 9th right now.
BAL: Alex Hoppe got the final out of the 6th to keep the score 4-2. Rico Garcia started the 7th and loaded the bases with one out before Yennier Cano came in and got the final two outs. All three guys picked up holds. Cam Sanders pitched the 8th and walked a couple before allowing a run scoring single. He would end up getting out of the inning with a double play. Andrew Kittredge allowed a couple to reach in the 9th but picked up the save protecting the 5-3 lead. Kitty is the closer here and you should be adding him. Rico Garcia is the guy for holds.
SFG: Ryan Walker gave up a couple runs in game one while they were down. In game two we got a look at the bullpen as they were up for most of the innings. Reiver Sanmartin got the final out of the 5th and picked up the win. Trent Harris pitched the 6th with a 4-1 lead. Jason Foley struggled through two outs in the 7th and allowed a run. Carson Seymour got the final out of the 7th and pitched the 8th with a 5-2 lead. All three of these guys picked up holds. They would make it 7-2 and Dylan Smith pitched a perfect 9th in a non-save situation. Seymour is the holds option and Smith appears to still be holding on to the closers role.
ARI: Game one was a blowout and saw Taylor Clarke allow a run in the 8th and Brandyn Garcia pitch a perfect 9th. In game two they used a majority of the bullpen. Gerardo Carrillo was the first in and allowed some inherited runs to score and one of his own. Justin Martinez pitched in the 8th and an error cost him. He would only get two outs and would be charged with two unearned runs after Dennis Santana came in and gave up a couple hits. Justin Martinez was the last guy to pitch so if they had a lead he would have pitched the 9th. I still think he will lead this team in saves the rest of the way but Garcia, Morillo, and Ginkel might see some chances as well.
LAA: They didn't use anyone of importance. Trevor Martin pitched the 8th, 9th, and 10th and finally gave up three runs in the 10th. He was making his first appearance for the team. Joyce is the closer and Watson and Fermin are battling for holds though I wouldn't roster either.
PHI: Jonathan Bowlan allowed a two out solo dong in the 8th that tied the game at 1-1. He was charged with a blown save. Jhoan Duran returned from his stomach bug and pitched the 9th allowing a couple to reach. He would return for the 10th with a 4-1 lead and allowed the ghost runner to score. He would pick up the win. Bowlan allowing that run could open the door back up for the 8th. Kerkering and Raley could be used for holds as well. Probably a group to avoid.
