Bullpen Notes🗒️(8/28)
CHC: They had a 3-2 lead in the 6th when Trent Thornton gave up 5 runs and got two outs. Aaron Civale got them to the 9th and allowed a couple unearned runs over his 2.1 innings. Daniel Palencia pitched the 9th with the team down 9-8 and allowed a solo dong. Webb is still the closer here and the whole bullpen is struggling right now. Palencia looks like he needs at least another outing before he could be considered for the 9th.
CIN: Luis Mey pitched a perfect 6th with a 6-3 lead and returned for the 7th with a 9-3 lead. He got two quick outs before allowing the next three to reach and one run scored. Brock Burke got the final out. Tejay Antone faced three batters in the 8th and allowed a three run dong. With the score now 9-7 Sam Moll came in and finished the inning but allowed a run. With a 10-8 lead in the 9th old reliable when healthy Emilio Pagán was perfect picking up the save. Pagán is the only guy I would roster in this bullpen. You could keep tabs on Antone and Santillan but both guys give up too many runs to make their holds worthwhile.
LAD: Evan Phillips pitched a perfect 7th striking out the side with the score 1-1. He would pick up the win. Brock Stewart would start the 8th with a 2-1 lead and he walked two but got a double play. Alex Vesia came on to get the final out with a couple on and both guys picked up holds. Tanner Scott had the 9th and was perfect picking up the save. Scott is locked in as the closer and I still think Vesia is the best option as the late inning lefty for holds. They have too many righties to trust one.
NYM: Nate Lavender was charged with a blown save in the 6th after coming in with the bases loaded and one out. They had a 1-0 lead and he allowed all three inherited runs to score. He still hasn't allowed a run of his own on the season. Jonathan Pintaro pitched the 7th and walked a guy with two outs. Dedniel Nunez pitched a perfect 8th and Kodai Senga was perfect in the 9th. It wouldn't shock me if they didn't use Senga tomorrow which should open up the door for Duarte to get the save chance.
HOU: With a 3-1 lead in the 7th Bryan Abreu got the final out with a runner on. He would return for the 8th and pitch a perfect inning to pick up a hold. Josh Hader pitched the 9th against the middle of the order and was perfect picking up the save. Okert and Abreu are the guys to roster for holds and Hader is the closer.
KCR: Steven Cruz was the only man needed from the bullpen today as the starter went eight. He had a 3-0 lead in the 9th and started by allowing a single. He would rotate between letting batters on and get outs before getting a groundout to himself to end the game with the bases loaded. Cruz is back in as the closer but will this just be another couple week stretch or actually taking over the job? Pearson is next up but my pick is Cruz. I would add him if you are looking for saves with the team hot right now.
TBR: Manuel Rodríguez got the final out of the 6th with the score 7-4. He would return for the 7th and get two outs before allowing two runners on and being pulled for Kevin Kelly who got the final out. Both guys picked up holds. Rodríguez has some late inning potential but both Kelly and Cleavinger are better options for holds right now. Matz pitched the final two innings after they took a 9-4 lead.
BOS: They were down 1-0 for all of the bullpen innings. Greg Weissert got two outs in the 6th with the bases loaded. Tyron Guerrero pitched the 7th and Wyatt Olds had the 8th. Guerrero and Miller are the two guys to roster for holds. Chapman is the closer.
NYY: With a 1-0 lead in the 6th Brent Headrick came on and loaded the bases before getting the final out. He would return for the 7th and strike a batter out to pick up a hold. Paul Blackburn was next up and he got a flyout with the runner getting thrown out at the plate to end the inning. He would return for the 8th and pitch a perfect inning to pick up a hold. David Bednar went one, two, three in the 9th and picked up the save. Bednar is the closer and the other two guys are the holds options. Headrick has the better season numbers but Blackburn has pitched very well since moving into the higher leverage spots.
ATL: They successful kept the lead after flipping their bullpen. Dylan Dodd allowed a lead off double in the 6th but kept the score at 6-3. Ray Kerr pitched the 7th and loaded the bases before allowing a sac fly that plated a run. He would get the final out and pick up a hold. Victor Mederos pitched the 8th and allowed two on but also picked up a hold. With a 6-4 lead in the 9th Raisel Iglesias allowed a lead off single but got a double play to help him convert the save. They gave Lee another day of rest but he is still the best option for holds. I do like Dodd as a sleeper holds option. Iggy is the closer and locked into that role.
SEA: Seranthony Domínguez pitched the 6th and allowed a run and Michael Rucker pitched the 7th and 8th and allowed a couple runs. Neither guy should be rostered in any fantasy setting.
MIL: Aaron Ashby battled through the 8th with a 4-1 lead. He would allow a couple runners to reach but didn't give up a run and picked up a hold. They took a 6-1 lead in the 9th and DL Hall finished up the game. Abner Uribe and JoJo Romero both made appearances in triple A and they should be back this weekend or at the start of next week. Uribe would slide back into the 8th as the best option and I would assume Romero would replace Ashby as the late inning lefty but that will remain to be seen. Any bullpen option you are rostering here for holds will take a hit. Megill is safe as the closer.
CHW: Hagen Smith pitched a perfect 5th, got an out in the 6th, and allowed a single before being pulled for Grant Taylor. They had a 6-4 lead at the time. Grant Taylor got a double play to end the 6th, was perfect in the 7th, and got a double play to end the 8th. He would end up picking up the win with the game 7-4. Bryan Hudson allowed a couple runners on base in the 9th but converted the save. Taylor had made four appearances of one inning in a row but that was all thrown away today. He only threw 27 pitches so I suppose we could see him one more time in this series. I doubt he pitches tomorrow so that would open the 9th for pretty much anyone if they have a lead. I would hold Taylor but this was a setback of sorts for his role as closer.
PIT: They were down for the bullpen innings but Gregory Soto got an inning in. I think he is still a decent holds option since he is a left handed pitcher. Weaver is the 8th inning man and Monty is the closer.
STL: Ryan Fernandez got the final out of the 6th with a 3-1 lead and a guy on. He would pitch a perfect 7th and get a couple outs in the 8th. After a walk he was pulled Caleb Ferguson who allowed a hit but the ball hit the batter who was going from first to second to end the inning. Both guys picked up holds. With ROB and Soriano having pitched back to back days they went with Ryne Stanek. He pitched a perfect 9th and was credited with a save. This was just situational save and ROB remains the closer. Soriano and Stanek do have value if you are chasing holds.
LAA: Jose Fermin pitched a perfect 7th with a 3-1 lead and picked up a hold. Ryan Watson started the 9th but after getting two outs and walking a batter they pulled him for Tayler Saucedo and a lefty/lefty matchup. Saucedo would get Harper out and both guys picked up holds. Ben Joyce started the 9th and had his first bad outing. He didn't have much control and of his 26 pitches 25 of them were fastballs and only 11 were strikes. He would get two outs one on am amazing catch and leave with the bases loaded. Sammy Peralta came in and gave up a grand slam that put them down 5-3. Joyce would be charged with three runs, a loss, and a hold. Peralta would take the blown save. Watson has moved into the 8th and could be a sleeper for holds. We knew Joyce was going to have some struggles but throwing only fastballs was pretty odd. As long as he is active he should close until Natera returns and then we could see more of a split.
PHI: With the team down José Alvarado pitched the 7th and Alex McFarlane had the 8th. McFarlane would end up picking up the win. Then we got the surprise of the night which was Jonathan Bowlan coming on for the 9th instead of Jhoan Duran. Bowlan hit the first batter and they made an error on what could have been an inning ending double play but he got the job done. This team cant afford to be without Duran so we wait to hear news on him. Bowlan is the next in line for saves and the best holds option so might be time to add him.
ATH: They were down or tied for all of the bullpen innings. Scott Blewett pitched the 6th and 7th and Luis Medina pitched the 8th. After tying it in the bottom of the 8th Hogan Harris had the 9th. He would get the game to the 10th despite allowing a lead off walk. Brady Basso allowed the ghost runner to score and one more in the 10th and took the loss. Harris and Alvarado are in the mix for saves. Alvarado had pitched the last two nights so no surprise to see Harris tonight in the closers spot. Alvarado probably has more traditional closers stuff but Harris has had the better results. Both could be worth rostering if you need saves.
BAL: Rico Garcia came on for the 8th with a 2-1 lead. He skimmed the first batter with a ball to the head and would eventually allow a single that tied the game. A runner was thrown out at the plate to keep it tied. Yennier Cano got the final out of the inning and Garcia was charged with a blown save. Andrew Kittredge allowed a one out single in the 9th that got the game to extras. He would pick up the win. Alex Hoppe pitched the 10th and allowed the ghost runner to score but with two run lead picked up the save. Kitty is the best option for saves and Garcia is the other late inning guy for holds and the occasional save. Nothing is changing until Bautista and Helsley return which should happen in Sept.
ARI: They used a lot of the bullpen today for an inning each with a double header tomorrow. Gerardo Carrillo pitched the 5th and walked a couple but picked up a win. Jonathan Loáisiga had the 6th and Brandyn Garcia pitched the 7th with only Garcia hitting a batter. Dennis Santana allowed an unearned run in the 8th. Juan Morillo pitched the 9th with a 10-6 lead and allowed a hit. JMart is rested and will pitch in the double header tomorrow but will he get a save chance? If he doesn't Morillo, Garcia, and Ginkel could be next up.
