Bullpen Notes🗒️(8/25)
MIA: They used almost the entire bullpen and we got a look at what the bullpen might look like. Victor Vodnik got the final out of the 5th in a 1-1 game. Tyler Zuber had the 6th with a 2-1 lead but allowed a solo homer that tied the game. Jack Ralston pitched a perfect 7th, Michael Petersen allowed a couple on in the 8th but didn't allow a run, and Josh Ekness pitched in the closers spot in the 9th. They got the game to the 10th and Calvin Faucher allowed the ghost runner to score. They would tie it in the bottom of the inning but Cade Gibson loaded the bases and allowed a grand slam. He would end up taking the loss. Like I said last night Petersen, Faucher, and Ekness are the guys here. It would be interesting to see them give the 9th to Ekness but I still feel like this is a committee. Faucher and Petersen should still be in the mix though I get the feeling today that Petersen might be the off man out.
BOS: Tyron got a couple outs in the 6th and pitched the 7th. He allowed runners on base but no runs scored and the game was tied. Greg Weissert pitched the 8th and allowed a two out hit. Erik Miller had the 9th and was perfect with the game still tied at 2-2. Wyatt Olds should have gotten the save in the 10th with a 3-2 lead but he struck out the final batter and the ball got away so the runner scored. They brought in Alex Gamboa who got the final out and pitched the 11th with a 7-3 lead. He would pick up the win. Miller and Guerrero have the most value as holds option. Chapman is the closer.
DET: Drew Sommers came on with the team down 1-0 and one out in the 5th. He got the final two outs and pitched a perfect 6th after they had taken the lead. He would pick up a win. Jacob Waguespack had the 7th and walked a batter with two outs. Tyler Holton pitched the 8th with a 4-1 lead and he allowed a two out single. Both guys picked up holds. Kenley Jansen pitched a perfect 9th and picked up the save. I like how the bullpen setup today with Holton in the 8th. He is the best option for saves and Kenley is the closer.
WSN: Brad Lord, Max Kranick, and Jake Bird got the last 13 outs. They didn't allow a run and kept the deficit at 3-1. I mainly note this because I don't think these guys should be in the mix for saves. Beeter is the best option but his usage remains to be at any point in the 7th, 8th, and 9th.
COL: Mark Manfredi came on in the 5th with a 3-1 lead, no outs, and one on. He would get through the inning and return for the 6th where he allowed a single. He picked up the win. Jimmy Herget got the three outs in the 6th, Jaden Hill pitched a perfect 7th, and Brennan Bernardino allowed a two out single in the 8th but all three guys picked up holds. Jordan Romano had the 9th with the score still 3-1 and he allowed a two out walk but picked up the save. Romano continues to have success in the 9th and Bernadino is the best option for holds. The biggest problem for both of these guys is they don't win that often.
NYY: Fernando Cruz pitched the 6th with a 5-3 and allowed a two run homer after getting two outs. He was charged with a blown save. Yerry De los Santos pitched the 7th with the game tied at 5-5. They took a 6-5 lead and Brent Headrick had the 8th. He got an out but allowed a solo homer and another couple runs that made the game 8-6. He was charged with a blown save and a loss. Bradley Hanner got the final out of the 8th and allowed a run in the 9th. Tough day for the bullpen and the normally reliable Headrick. He does remain a solid holds option along with Blackburn. Bednar is the closer.
HOU: Bennett Sousa got five outs in the 5th and 6th. He pitched with the team down and with the game tied. Steven Okert struggled in the 7th getting two outs but allowing three men to reach and a run to score. Bryan Abreu got the final out of the inning and returned for the 8th with the team now ahead. He would allow a double and single that scored a run. He would get a couple outs but they used Josh Hader to get the final out of the 8th. Hader would pitch the 9th with a 9-7 lead and he picked up the save. The bullpen has been shaky lately outside of Hader. Okert has struggled but he is still the best option for holds.
TOR: Most of the scrubs pitched since they were down but Tyler Rogers did allow a run in the 9th. He is the best option for holds here and Varland is the closer.
KCR: With a 4-1 lead John Schreiber pitched a perfect 6th, Connor Thomas pitched the 7th getting a double to get though the inning, and Nate Pearson loaded the bases but didn't allow a run in the 8th. All three guys picked up holds. Steven Cruz had the 9th with a 5-1 lead and naturally he got two outs before allowing three singles and two runs. A closer in a non-save is always dangerous. Cruz and Pearson are the two guys to roster here and I like Cruz as the closer.
MIL: Chad Patrick was the first man in with the score 1-1 in the 6th. He would allow a lead off dong that put them down. They used Antonio Senzatela to get four outs in the 6th and 7th and Ashby pitched the 8th all with the team down 2-1. Trevor Megill pitched the 9th after they tied it and he returned for the 10th. He walked a couple batters to load the bases with one out and got a grounder that was thrown away. The ghost runner scored so it was unearned anyway but he was charged with the loss. Todays setup is how I would except to see the bullpen used with Uribe out.
NYM: With a 2-1 lead Nate Lavender pitched a perfect 7th and 8th and picked up a hold. Austin Warren who has been very good this year had the 9th. He failed allowing a couple doubles and a walk to the first three he faced. Jefry Yan came in and got the final two outs of the inning. Warren was charged with a blown save. Jonathan Pintaro pitched the 10th and walked a batter but didn't allow the ghost runner to score. He picked up the win. They didn't want to use Senga for the third time in four days so that is why he was off. I would have expected Duarte but he didn't pitch either. Warren has been good enough to get a chance. Senga is still the guy though we are learning that he has several restrictions to avoid overuse.
LAD: Alex Vesia pitched a perfect 6th with the game tied at 3-3. Jack Dreyer started the 7th getting a couple outs and allowing two runners to reach. Evan Phillips got the final out of the inning. They used Tanner Scott against the middle of the order in the 8th and he allowed a run and ended up with the loss. Scott will occasionally pitch in these types of spots but he is still the closer.
ATL: Dylan Lee pitched the 7th with the game tied at 3-3. He faced the top of the lineup which has a couple lefties. Victor Mederos got two outs in the 8th and then walked two batters. Dylan Dodd got the final out of the inning and he picked up the win. Raisel Iglesias had the 9th and allowed a lead off triple which really should have been an error. He did manage to keep the run from scoring and picked up the save. Iggy is the closer and Lee and Dodd offer the most value for holds.
CHW: They had a big lead but used Jordan Hicks to get the final out of the 5th. He would return for the 6th and allow three runs while getting two outs. Bryan Hudson got the final out of the 6th with the score 10-7 and returned for the 7th pitching a perfect inning. They would tack on a run and Hagen Smith would pitch the 8th and start the 9th. He walked the bases loaded and they brought in Grant Taylor to get the final out and pick up the save. We have seen a clear switch in Taylor's usage this past week. He is clearly being used as the closer and should be added everywhere. The time is now and maybe they keep this up for the rest of the season. This is the most confident I have been about Taylor in the 9th all year. Huascar Brazoban hit the IL prior to the game.
LAA: The bullpen pitched a lot of innings starting with Jose Fermin in the 4th and 5th where he gave up two runs. Tayler Saucedo got the ball to the 8th and Ryan Watson came on and allowed a run that tied the game at 6-6. Saucedo picked up a hold and Watson was charged with a blown save. Ben Joyce struck out three in the 9th and Blake Weiman took the loss allowing two runs in the 10th. Joyce is the only guy worth rostering in the bullpen and he is the closer. Sounds like Natera could be back soon as well.
CLE: They used most of the bullpen and were down for most of the game. After tying in in the 8th Colin Holderman pitched the bottom of the inning and Erik Sabrowski pitched the 9th picking up a win. Cade Smith would have the 10th and despite hitting a batter he would get the next three and pick up the save. Smith is a stud and add Sabrowski if he as cut. He is back looking strong for holds.
CHC: With a 4-0 lead the turned to Daniel Palencia in the 8th. It got ugly as he didn't have much control. He would hit a batter, walk a batter, get a couple outs, allow a double that scored a run, and a single that scored two. Jacob Webb came in to finish the inning and would return for the 9th with the score 4-3. He got a couple outs with a walk mixed in and then allowed a two run game ending dong. That is now back to back blown saves for Webb and he is officially on watch. The good news for him was Palencia struggled as well. I expect Webb will still get the next chance but this situation is becoming fluid and if these guys can't get the job done Zef and Thornton might find their way into the mix.
ARI: They were down 4-0 and used Dennis Santana to get four outs in the 7th and 8th. He has been decent in the mop up role he is pitching in. Justin Martinez pitched the 9th with the team down 4-3 and was hitting 103 on the gun. He is progressing to pitching later in games as expected. He would end up picking up the win. JMart should find his way into the closer role but they will avoid using him too often which keeps Ginkel and Garcia in the mix.
ATH: With a 4-1 lead, one out, and one on in the 7th Hogan Harris came in. He would allow the inherited runner to score and a couple guys to reach but he got out of the inning and picked up a hold. Luis Medina pitched a perfect 8th and picked up a hold. They turned to Elvis Alvarado who was perfect in the 9th against the lower part of the order but picked up the save. I love Alvarado and think he should be the closer but his results haven't been ideal. This team seems to be sliding into a duo with Harris and Alvarado and since they have nothing to play for getting both guys looks isn't the worst thing in the world. It sucks for fantasy though.
PHI: Orion Kerkering started the 7th down 2-1. He loaded the bases while getting two outs and was pulled for Brooks Raley who allowed a two run single before getting the final out. Jonathan Bowlan pitched the 8th and allowed a one out walk. Duran is the closer and I like Bowlan and Raley ahead of Kerkering right now. All three guys are risky for holds.
SEA: The starter got two outs in the 8th and after allowing a single they went with Jose A. Ferrer who got the final out. Andrés Muñoz pitched the 9th with a 4-1 lead and walked a couple batters but struck out three picking up the save. Muñoz is the closer and Bazardo is the best option for holds.
SDP: Adrian Morejon pitched a perfect 8th with the game tied at 0-0. In the 9th they went to Mason Miller with the game still tied and he allowed a two out dong. He would end up taking the loss. These are the 8th and 9th inning guys in the bullpen and they are studs.
PIT: Camilo Doval pitched the 7th with the game tied at 0-0 and allowed a lead off walk but nothing else. Gregory Soto had the 8th and was perfect. He would pick up the win. Mason Montgomery pitched the 9th and allowed a two out walk but stuck out the final batter to pick up the save. Monty is the closer and Soto and Weaver are the holds options.
SFG: Somewhat of a bullpen game here as they used Adrian Houser and Anthony Molina to get though the first 6 innings. Molina would pick up the win. Sam Hentges pitched the 7th and allowed a lead off single but picked up a hold as the game was 3-0. Trent Harris had the 8th and allowed a one out walk but also picked up a hold. In somewhat of a surprise that went with Carson Seymour in the 9th. He allowed a lead off dong that made it 3-1 but got the next three out to pick up the save. Smith had pitched last night and has pitched a lot this last week so they must have wanted to get him some extra rest. I still think Smith is the closer but once again this is a bad team that could use other guys to get a look. Seymour has been more of a bulk guy so it is hard to see him getting to many chances.
