Bullpen Notes🗒️(8/24)
TBR: With a 4-1 lead in the 7th they used Garrett Cleavinger who pitched a perfect inning and picked up a hold. In the 8th Manuel Rodríguez made his first appearance of the season. He allowed a double and a walk but picked up the hold. Bryan Baker had the 9th and with one out hit a batter and allowed a single but struck the next two to pick up the save. That was three days in a row for Baker though in one the game ended on the first batter he faced. The bullpen is looking stronger with Rodríguez back but I still think Kelly is the best option for holds. Baker is a stud closer.
MIA: With a 2-1 lead in the 8th they turned to Josh Ekness. He let the first two on and eventually a runner would score on a wild pitch. He was charged with a blown save. Pete Fairbanks started the 9th and walked the only batter he faced while leaving with an injury and picking up the loss. Tyler Zuber came on and allowed the Fairbanks runner to score on a triple and one run of his own on a single. He would get one out. Cade Gibson got the final two outs with the team down 4-2.Fairbanks injury is nevre related and he spent a couple weeks on the IL earlier in the season. It seems like we will see an IL trip. They were a frustrating committee last year and that is my expectation this year. Calvin Faucher, Michael Petersen, and Josh Ekness would be the three I focus on. Petersen is my pick but Ekness has some sleeper value. Pick your poison here.
BOS: Brayan Bello pitched a perfect 6th and returned for the 7th where he allowed one run and put them down 2-1. They tied the game and Erik Miller pitched the 8th. He let a couple reach base but got out of the inning and he would pick up the win. Aroldis Chapman allowed a lead off single with a 4-2 lead in the 9th and he picked up the save. Chappy is the closer and Miller and Guerrero offer solid value for holds.
WSN: Erik Tolman pitched the 7th while the team had a big lead and Jake Bird pitched the 9th. Those two made sense but for whatever reason they used Clayton Beeter in the 8th with a 10-2 lead and he allowed a run. He had pitched two days ago so it wasn't like he had been off for that long. This is why I am forced to leave this bullpen as a committee. Beeter should be the closer but other guys will be in the mix due to how they use him. Ribalta and Cosgrove are the most likely to see a 9th if Beeter has already pitched.
CLE: Colin Holderman pitched the 7th with a 4-1 lead and he would allow a double but struck out the other three batters. Hunter Gaddis had the 8th and allowed a lead off single. Both guys picked up holds. Cade Smith pitched the 9th and he hit a batter, allowed a one out single, and a run scored on a sacrifice fly. The game ended 4-2 and he picked up a save. Erik Sabrowski didn't pitch but him and Gaddis are the best options for holds here. Smith is the closer and a very good one.
MIN: With a 9-1 lead in the 8th they turned to Tommy Nance. He would allow a lead off single and that runner would eventually come around to score after he loaded the bases. They used Yoendrys Gomez in the 9th with a 9-2 lead and he struggled. After getting the first two outs he allowed back to back singles and a walk that loaded the bases. He would then give up three doubles in a row and was charged with a four runs. Andrew Morris came on and got the final out to pick the save. He only needed one pitch. I hated seeing Gomez in a situation like this but I am not worried about the runs he allowed. It hurts in fantasy but he is still the closer here. Morris who has struggled seems like the next in line and is also the best option for holds.
SDP: A lot of bullpen innings with the team down or tied tonight. Bradgley Rodriguez allowed an inherited runner to score in the 6th to make it 2-0 but got the final two outs. Yuki Matsui pitched the 7th allowing a walk. Kyle Hart allowed a lead off single in the 8th but nothing else. They tied it and used Mason Miller in the 9th and he allowed a couple on with two outs but got out of the inning. Adrian Morejon pitched the 10th and the 11th without allowing the ghost runner to score. Jeremiah Estrada had the 12th and he finally allowed a ghost runner to score. He would end up with the loss. We know Miller and Morejon are the studs here and Rodriguez and Estrada are the next men up for holds.
PIT: Gregory Soto pitched the 7th allowing a walk but picking up a hold. With a 2-1 lead in the 8th they went with Luke Weaver and he struggled allowing a couple walks, a couple hits, and a run. Mason Montgomery would get out of the 8th with the bases loaded and he got a double play in the 9th to face the minimum. Camilo Doval had the 10th and Kirby Yates pitched the 11th with neither allowing the ghost runner to score and Yates getting a win. After taking a 3-2 lead they used Yohan Ramirez in the 12th. He looked pretty good and struck out the final batter on a ball that hit the guy while he was swinging at the pitch. Ramirez would pick up the save. Monty is the closer here and Weaver might be pitching himself out of the 8th with appearances like today.
CIN: They used Emilio Pagán in the 8th with the team down 5-0. He allowed one on and this was really just a work appearance. He is still the closer here and the only bullpen pitcher of any importance that pitched tonight.
SFG: This was a bullpen game for the most part. They had a 5-0 lead for all of the bullpen innings. Jason Foley pitched in the 3rd and 4th and picked up a win. Reiver Sanmartin pitched the 6th without issue. Ryan Walker returned to the big show and let two on in the 6th but returned to pitch a perfect 7th. Carson Seymour pitched the 8th and Dylan Smith pitched the 9th allowing a couple guys to reach with one out but no runs scored. The game ended at 5-0. Smith is the closer here and probably the only pitcher worth rostering in the bullpen. JT Brubaker hit the IL earlier in the day.
