Bullpen Notes🗒️(8/20)
CIN: With a 5-4 lead in the 7th they went with Julian Garcia who allowed a lead off walk but got a double play to end the inning. Tejay Antone pitched the 8th and also allowed a walk but the guy was caught stealing. Both guys picked up holds. Brock Burke had the 9th after pitching the 7th yesterday and a bad break that cost him. With two outs and two on the center fielder dropped a routine fly ball. Two runs scored on that and Burke would face four more batters without getting an out. Zach Maxwell finished the game and Burke was charged with 6 unearned runs, a blown save, and a loss. Clearly they were avoiding using Pagan after he had pitched last night. He is still the closer. This was tough luck for Burke who has some holds value. Antone and potentially Mey are in the mix for holds.
STL: Ryne Stanek was brought in with a 4-0 lead for the 6th with 1 out and the bases loaded. He would allow a single that scored a run and a grand slam that made the game 5-4. Peter Strzelecki pitched the 7th and 8th with the team down. With a 10-5 lead in the 9th George Soriano came in and walked two while getting a couple outs before allowing a run scoring single and another walk. Riley O'Brien came in and struggled as well giving up a single that scored two and a two walks one of which scored a run. He would get the final out and picked up the save. Soriano was charged with all four runs. It goes down as just a save for ROB and he is the closer here. Soriano and Stanek are risky options for holds.
SFG: They were down for the bullpen innings but used Sam Hentges to get out of the 6th. He allowed an inherited runner to score. JT Brubaker pitched the 8th and allowed an unearned run after an error trying throw out a runner stealing. Smith is the closer and Hentges has very low end holds value.
CLE: Tim Herrin got the final out of the 6th with a guy on. He would pick up a hold. Erik Sabrowski pitched a perfect 7th and picked up a hold. Hunter Gaddis got a couple outs in the 8th before letting two on, He would get the final out and pick up a hold. With a 5-2 lead in the 9th they turned to Cade Smith and he also got two outs before walking a couple and picking up the save. We know Smith is the closer here but they have been using Sabrowski late in the game again and he has been converting. If he was let go I would add him for holds. Gaddis also is solid in the 8th and we haven't seen Holderman for a few days so keep an eye on that.
TOR: They had a 5-1 lead but used Spencer Miles in the 8th. He was perfect and they went with Varland in the 9th. He let a couple on but didn't allow any runs. Varland is the closer here and Rogers is the best option for holds.
KCR: Carlos Duran allowed a couple runs in the 5th and Connor Thomas got out of the inning, pitched the 6th and into the 7th. He picked up the win. They had a 6-2 lead and used Craig Kimbrel in the 7th, John Schreiber in the 8th, and Nate Pearson in the 9th. All three of these guys were perfect but they had a four run lead that prevented them from getting any holds or saves. Cruz is the closer and Pearson is the best option for holds.
MIL: With a 6-2 lead in the 4th, two outs, and two on they went with Chad Patrick. He allowed both inherited runners to score. He would pitch through the 6th inning and picked up the win. Aaron Ashby pitched a perfect 7th and returned for the 8th walking a couple batters but getting out of the inning. He would pick up a hold. Trevor Megill had the 9th with a 7-4 lead and he was perfect picking up the save. Megill is the closer and Ashby is the best option for saves. Patrick also has value and will pick up holds, wins, and the occasional save. He pitches in all innings pretty much.
ATL: They had a 2-0 lead in the 7th and went with Didier Fuentes who was perfect and struck out the side. In the 8th they went with Dylan Lee and he was also perfect. Both guys picked up holds. Raisel Iglesias pitched the 9th striking out two and picked up a save. Lee and Iglesias are the guys for holds and saves.
NYY: The bullpen had been especially taxed lately and they got a nice break today. Ryan Yarbrough finished off the game pitching the last three innings. He was credited with a save. Don't worry about adding him as it was just a bulk save. Bednar is the closer.
WSN: Down 1-0 in the 6th they used Orlando Ribalta. He allowed a lead off single and nothing else. Clayton Beeter pitched the 7th and walked a batter with one out. Neither of these guys had pitched since Saturday so they were getting some work in. Tom Cosgrove pitched the 8th and allowed a run after giving up a one out triple and a sac fly. Beeter is still the best option for saves but they use him in the biggest spots late in the game so other guys will see chances as well.
TEX: Jakob Junis had the 7th with a 1-0 lead and he allowed a couple walks but got a double play to end the inning. He was facing the middle of the order. Chase Silseth pitched the 8th against the bottom of the order and both guys picked up holds. They tacked on a run and Jacob Latz pitched the 9th. He allowed a one out walk but had no other issues. He picked up the save. I still think Junis is the best option for holds and Silseth is very inconsistent but he might be then next best options for holds. Latz is the closer.
LAA: The game was a blowout so we will hit on the pregame news. Samy Natera Jr. was placed on the IL with a back issue. This was obviously going to happen after the news a couple days ago. Ben Joyce is now the closer and while I still dont expect him to pitch back to back he looks like he will be a stud. They like to use Jose Fermin for whatever reason so he would be the next option if Joyce has the night off.
