Bullpen Notes🗒️(8/19)
DET: Tyler Holton got the final two outs of the 6th with a 3-1 lead and picked up a hold. In the 7th Jacob Waguespack got two outs and allowed a solo homer that made it 3-2. Drew Sommers got the final out of the inning and both guys picked up holds. Kyle Finnegan pitched the 8th and allowed a couple two out walks but picked up a hold. Kenley Jansen pitched the 9th with a 3-2 lead and allowed two solo dongs to blow the save. It was his first blown save since May 17th and his 5th of the year. They cant afford to lose games but they also don't have another strong option for the 9th. I would think Kenley stays as the closer but maybe they switch back to riding the hot hand with guys giving them bulk innings. Kenley deservers another shot and Holton is still the best option for holds.
PIT: Another close game though in this one they were down. Gregory Soto got the final two outs of the 5th but allowed an inherited runner to score which made it 3-1. He would return and pitch a perfect 6th. In the 7th Camilo Doval allowed a walk but nothing else. Down 3-2 Luke Weaver pitched a perfect 8th against the middle of the lineup. Mason Montgomery had the 9th and allowed a couple singles but didn't allow a run. He would end up picking up the win after they rallied in the bottom of the 9th. It really seems like Monty is the closer here. There could still be some matchup based usage with him and Weaver but I would go out and add Monty if you are looking for saves.
SDP: Jeremiah Estrada did pitch today so yesterday appears to have been an extra day off. He got an out to end the 7th with the team down 2-1 and returned for the 8th where he allowed a couple runs (1 unearned). Yuki Matsui got the final two outs and allowed one Estrada run to score to end the 8th. Miller is the closer and Morejon is a better option than Estrada for holds though both have value.
NYM: Jonathan Pintaro came on in the 5th and walked a batter before getting a double play to end the inning. He allowed a lead off double in the 6th but Nate Lavender got three outs and picked up the win. Recently activated Austin Warren pitched the 7th and Daniel Duarte had the 8th with both striking out two and picking up holds. With a 4-1 lead in the 9th they went with Kodai Senga who struggled a bit allowing a run but getting a double play to end the game. He picked up a save. Senga is going to have the occasional adventure but as long as he keeps converting he is going to close. Duarte is the holds guy in the 8th.
ATL: Dylan Dodd got a couple outs in the 5th but allowed two inherited runners to score. They tied the game and used Victor Mederos in the 6th. He had no issues but would return for the 7th and allow a double while getting an out. Dylan Lee came in and he gave up Mederos run and one of his own after allowing two hits and a walk. Ray Kerr pitched the 8th with the team down 6-4. It was a rough day for the bullpen especially Lee but he is still the best option for holds here with Iggy as the closer.
MIN: With a 4-1 lead in the 6th they brought in Kody Funderburk. He allowed three singles and got an out on a sac fly. Tommy Nance came in and allowed a run on a balk. All three runs that scored in the inning were charged to Funderburk but he picked up a hold and Nance was charged with a blown save. Nance would get an out in the 7th and Minter would get the next two while allowing a walk. He picked up a win. Jeff Hoffman had the 8th with a 6-4 lead and allowed a one out double but picked up the save. Yoendrys Gomez pitched a perfect 9th which was his third appearance and save in a row. The late inning guys have pitched a lot these last five days. Gomez is the closer and Minter and Morris have the most value for holds.
CWS: Sean Newcomb started the game and pitched the 1st and 2nd. He allowed a walk in each inning but no runs. Jose Urquidy pitched the next six innings and that left the 9th for Grant Taylor. He got the 9 hitter out and then faced the top of the lineup. He did walk a batter with two outs but struck out Bregman to end it. He would pick up the save. This is exactly what Taylor fans wanted to see. He's the best pitcher in the bullpen and the problem they have is getting to the 9th without using him. I still don't expect him to be the closer here and I think it stays a committee with Newcomb, Hudson and maybe even Hicks or Brazoban.
BOS: Greg Weissert gave up a couple runs in the 6th with the team down. They tied it at 5-5 and used Erik Miller in the 7th. He allowed a lead off single and a one out walk but got through the inning. Tyron Guerrero pitched the 8th and Aroldis Chapman pitched the 9th and Chapman allowed a walk. Jovani Moran had the 10th and allowed the ghost runner to score on a single and walked a batter in. He walked three in the inning and picked up the loss. The once mighty bullpen is looking weak due to injury. Chapman is the closer and Miller and Guerrero are decent options for holds.
ARI: Juan Morillo got the final out of the 6th with the game tied at 5-5. He would return for the 7th and get two outs while allowing two on. Brandyn Garcia came in and faced the 3, and 4 hitters one of which was a lefty to get the final out. He returned for the 8th, got an out, and hit a batter before being pulled for Kevin Ginkel who got the final two outs. Jonathan Loáisiga pitched the 9th with the score still 5-5 and allowed a single but got a double play. He would return for the 10th with a 7-5 lead and would allow the ghost runner to score but he picked up a win. No Justin Martinez who had pitched last night and they will likely take the Ben Joyce approach which is no back to backs and a lot of rest at least for now. Garcia faced the best guys so I think he is the most likely to get saves but Ginkel and Jmart will be in the mix as well.
PHI: The starter got the game to the 8th with a 4-1 lead and they turned to Jonathan Bowlan. He let a couple guys on but got through the inning without allowing a run and picked up a hold. Jhoan Duran pitched the 9th and picked up the save despite allowing a lead off single. That was his third save in four days. The bullpen has pitched well this week and guys are piling up the holds. Duran is the closer and after that I like Bowlan for 8th inning holds but Kerkering and Raley will be in the mix as well
BAL: They were down for the bullpen innings. Wolfram got one out in the 6th with team down 3-2. Rico Garcia pitched the 7th with the game tied at 3-3 and allowed just a lead off single. Cam Sanders got the 8th for some reason walked a batter and hit two batters before being pulled for Cano. Cano allowed two runs to score but got the final out. Sanders would be charged with the loss. Not sure why they didn't let Cano start the inning. Alex Hoppe pitched the 9th. Kitty is the best option for saves here but he still might find himself in the biggest spots if the rest of the guys struggle. I don't like Cano at all so I'll say Garcia is the best option for holds.
NYY: Tim Hill was the first man in pitching the 5th and getting an out in the 6th. They would bring on Fernando Cruz with a 3-2 lead and he allowed a solo homer that tied the game. He was charged with a blown save. Brent Headrick pitched a perfect 7th and picked up the win. With a 5-3 lead Paul Blackburn pitched the 8th and despite putting two on he got the hold. David Bednar pitched a perfect 9th and picked up a save. Cruz shouldn't be rostered but Headrick and Blackburn are solid holds options. Bednar is the closer and a good one.
CIN: In the 6th inning down 2-0 they went with Sam Moll. He let a couple on but ended up picking up the win. With a 3-2 lead Brock Burke pitched the 7th and walked a couple batters but didn't allow a run and picked up a hold. They used Luis Mey in the 8th with the score still 3-2 and he walked one batter but struck out the other three. He picked up a hold and this was a nice step up in leverage. With a 5-2 lead in the 9th Emilio Pagán was called upon for the save chance. He hit the first batter he faced and gave up a two run dong but he did pick up the save. It was not a great outing but he got the job done and is the closer. Keep an eye on Mey as he has all the talent to pitch late just none of the control.
CLE: Down 1-0 they used Gaddis to get one out in the 7th, Sabrowski in the 8th and Smith in the 9th. These three should see most of the late innings with Smith as the closer. Holderman could be in the mix for holds if either of Gaddis or Sabrowski struggle.
SFG: They called up Matt Wilkinson who started the and pitched two innings allowing one man to reach. Old Tugboat as you will hear him called was very effective. Houser got the game into the 8th with a 1-0 lead and after he walked the lead off batter they went with Dylan Smith for the six out save. Smith struck out the side in the 8th against the meat of the order and in the 9th he allowed a one out single but converted the save chance. The rest of the bullpen has struggled and Smith is the closer here. Add him if you need saves.
TBR: Cam Booser and the bullpen were called into action with a 7-5 lead in the 6th inning. He faced three batters and got two outs but was charged with a run. Kevin Kelly allowed a double that scored a Booser run but he got the final out. He would return and pitch a perfect 7th and both guys picked up holds. In somewhat of a surprise Tyler Wells pitched the 8th allowed a walk but picked up the hold. They haven't used Wells this late which was the surprise. He certainly has the capability and with Cleavinger struggling he might have some chances. Bryan Baker pitched the 9th with a 7-6 lead and the lead off runner got on due to an error but he didn't allow a run. He picked up his league leading 36th save. Kelly is the guy to roster for holds and Baker is the closer. Keep an eye on Cleavinger and Wells and if they make a switch with the two due to Cleavinger's struggles.
ATH: With a 5-2 lead in the 6th Scott Blewett came in with two outs and a runner on. He allowed a single but got the final out picking up a hold. Elvis Alvarado pitched a perfect 7th against the top of the lineup picking up a hold. Things fell apart in the 8th which was started by Hayden Juenger who faced three batters without getting an out. Drew Rom would come in and struggle as well. Rom allowed five batters to reach. When all was said and done Juenger was charged with three runs and Rom was charged with four. Rom also was credited with a loss and blown save. Harris is the closer and still the only guy worth rostering.
KCR: The were down 5-2 when Alex Lange pitched a perfect 7th and Craig Kimbrel pitched a perfect 8th. Kimmy picked up a win. With a 9-5 lead in the 9th they went with Steven Cruz who allowed a two run two out dong that made it 7-5. Cruz is the best option for saves with Pearson as the next man up. Cruz has appeared to have taken over the role but it is still hard to tell if they will use him exclusively in the 9th.
SEA: With a 7-2 lead, no outs, and two on in the 6th Eduard Bazardo was brought in. He would allow a single that loaded the bases but only allowed one inherited run to score on a sac fly. Ferrer pitched the 7th and a couple guys reached but none scored. With a 7-3 lead in the 8th they went with Seranthony Domínguez and he allowed two runs to score before being pulled for Gabe Speier who got the final out and picked up a hold. Andrés Muñoz pitched a perfect 9th and picked up the save. They need to stop using Dominguez but the bullpen is pretty weak. Munoz is the closer and Speier and Bazardo are the best options for holds.
HOU: Bennett Sousa got the final out of the 4th and pitched the 5th. He would end up picking up the win. With a 3-2 lead AJ Blubaugh pitched the 6th allowing a single, Steven Okert walked the first batter while pitching the 7th, and Bryan Abreu pitched a perfect 8th. All three guys picked up holds and kept the lead. Josh Hader pitched the 9th picked up the save despite walking the lead off batter. Hader is the closer and Abreu and Okert are the primary options for holds.
COL: They were down for some of the bullpen innings but after tying it in the bottom of the 7th they brought in freshly activated Jaden Hill. He pitched a perfect inning. In the 9th with the score 4-4 Jordan Romano got the 9, 1, and 2 hitters out. Jimmy Herget started the 10th and allowed the ghost runner and another run before being pulled for Brennan Bernardino who finished the 10th off. Herget would take the loss. Hill should help this bullpen but he wont take over the closers spot. That belongs to Romano and Bernardino is still the best option for holds.
LAD: Brock Stewart returned from the IL and pitched the 6th with a 4-2 lead. He was perfect striking out two and picked up a hold. Alex Vesia had the 7th and he got a couple outs before allowing a walk and a two run game tying homer. He was charged with a blown save. Jack Dreyer had the 8th allowing a lead off walk and Kyle Hurt pitched the 9th giving up a two out single but the game went to extras. With a 6-4 lead in the 10th Tanner Scott was perfect and picked up the save. Scott is back as the closer and that leaves Vesia and Edgardo Henriquez as the most likely to record holds. If someone cut Scott add him.
