Bullpen Notes🗒️(8/16)
TBR: They had a 1-0 lead in the 5th when they went to Garrett Cleavinger with two on and two out. He allowed a single that scored a run and a double that scored two before getting out of the inning. The starter was charged with two runs and Cleavinger was charged with one. After that the bullpen gave up seven runs and the game turned into a blowout. Matz struggled in the 6th giving up five. Cleavinger has been struggling and that has turned Kevin Kelly into the better option for holds while Baker remains the closer.
ARI: Taylor Clarke got the final out of the 6th with the team down 2-1. He would return in the 7th with the game tied and allowed a leadoff double. Brandyn Garcia was brought on and he walked a batter, got an out, and allowed a three run homer that made it 5-2. Clarke would be charged with the loss and one run while Garcia was charged with two runs. Gerardo Carrillo pitched the 8th. Braves have a decent amount of lefties so seeing Garcia against the top of the lineup was not surprising. I think he still has the best chance to get a save but when Justin Martinez is back that will change and Ginkel could be in the mix as well. They activated Dennis Santana lol.
ATL: Didier Fuentes started the 7th with a 2-1 lead and allowed a lead off homer that tied it. He got the next three outs and was charged with a blown save but picked up a win. Dylan Lee pitched a perfect 8th with a 5-2 lead and picked up a hold. Raisel Iglesias had the 9th and let the first two on before getting out of it. He did balk the runners over and gave up one run on a ground out. He picked up the save. This is how the bullpen will look until Suarez returns and Dodd will pitch in the 7th as well.
PIT: It was a bullpen game and they had a lead for most of it. Bachar and Barco got through the first 6 innings with Barco allowing a three run homer. The game went through a rain delay and Kirby Yates pitched the 7th. He would be credited with the win. Camilo Doval had the 8th and Mason Montgomery pitched the 9th. It still think Weaver and Monty are in the mix for saves and I do think it is pretty close to a 50/50 split. We need to finally see them in a game with a lead late.
TOR: The bullpen was short handed with Varland, Rogers, and Fluharty resting after back to backs. With one out and a runner on in the 7th Brendon Little came in and allowed the inherited runner to score that put them down 2-1. Little would get one out in the 8th and walk a batter before Paul Sewald came on to finish the inning and pitch the 9th. They rallied to send it to the 10th and Braydon Fisher gave up a two run dong that put them down 4-2. He would end up with the loss. The four main guys in the bullpen didn't pitch today and those are the guys to roster.
NYY: The starter got into the 8th and was pulled with one out and a runner on. They had 2-1 lead at the time and David Bednar got the final two outs to end the inning. Bednar returned for the 9th and blew the save but it really was due to an error by Rice and a wild pitch. Bednar didn't allow a hit in the inning but he would end up picking up the win. In the 10th with a 4-2 lead they turned to Tim Hill who allowed the ghost runner to score but nothing else picking up the save. It was Bednar's first blown save since May 17th so there is nothing to worry about with him.
DET: Tyler Holton did what most guys do when I say nice things about them and allowed three runs. In the 6th with a 4-3 lead he gave up a lead off double and a single which would score that run. He would get out of the inning and return for the 7th. In the 7th he walked the first batter and allowed a homer to the next batter. He was charged with a blown save and picked up the loss. Tanner Rainey and Jacob Waguespack finished off the last three innings with Waguespack giving up one run. I still think Holton has more value for holds than Finnegan and Kenley is the closer.
CHW: Hagen Smith got the final two outs of the 5th with the team down 4-3. He would return for the 6th and walk the lead off hitter but have no other issues. He ended up picking up the win. Huascar Brazoban started the 7th with a 6-4 lead and allowed a couple doubles that scored a run while getting a couple outs. He picked up a hold. Sean Newcomb came in and got the final seven outs allowing only a one out walk in the 8th. He picked up the save. It seems like we can eliminate Braz from the conversation for the 9th at least as he continues to struggle in big spots. That leaves Taylor, Newcomb, Hudson, and Hicks I guess in the mix for saves. This is a committee so don't expect consistent saves from anyone right now.
CIN: Another rough outing in the 8th of a tie game for Tejay Antone. There was an error that did him no favors but he allowed an earned run and one unearned run while being charged with a loss. Ron Marinaccio gave up five in the 9th and should be finding himself on another team or out of the game very soon. Pagan is the closer here and Burke is the holds guy until Santillan comes back.
MIA: Josh Ekness pitched the 7th with the score 0-0 and he picked up a win. Michael Petersen had the 8th again with a 2-0 lead and allowed a run on a lead off homer but he picked up a hold. They opened it up and Zuber pitched the 9th. If anything were to happen to Fairbanks Ekness is a guy to watch as they have been using him in bigger spots lately. Petersen is still the best option for holds.
NYM: Nate Lavender got the final two outs of the 7th with a 4-3 lead and a couple guys on. He was credited with a hold. Daniel Duarte pitched a perfect 8th against the middle of the order and he picked up a hold. Kodai Senga's miraculous run in the 9th continued with another perfect inning picking up a save. Senga should be added everywhere right now. They keep winning and he has looked great while using his fastball/forkball combo and has been pretty much unhittable. Duarte is a cheap option for holds with the team winning.
MIN: Kody Funderburk got the final two outs of the 6th A.J. Minter pitched a perfect 7th with the team up 5-4. Both guys picked up holds. They used Andrew Morris in the 8th and he got into trouble after getting the first out. He would end up giving up three runs and being charged with a blown save and picking up the loss. Taylor Rogers pitched the 9th with the team down. Morris could lose his spot in the 8th with another outing like this but for now he remains the best option for holds. Minter is probably next up for holds and Gomez is the closer.
PHI: Nice bullpen performance today and I like the order guys were used. Tim Mayza pitched a perfect 6th with the team down 5-4. Orion Kerkering was perfect in the 7th picking up the win. with a 7-5 lead Jonathan Bowlan pitched the 8th and allowed a two out walk but picked up a hold. Jhoan Duran had the 9th and allowed a one out walk and single but struck out the next two to pick up the save. I really like Bowlan in the 8th and I think he is the best option for holds but if Kerkering starts pitching better he could get his spot back. Duran is the closer and is one of the best in the game.
SFG: Things got ugly for the bullpen today. With a 6-4 lead, two on and one out in the 5th they brought in Sam Hentges and he allowed both inherited runners to score. He would return for the 6th with the game tied at 6-6 and walked two while getting two outs before being pulled for JT Brubaker. Bru didn't get an out facing three batters. He had no control and was pulled for Reiver Sanmartin who gave up some more runs before getting the final out. Hentges who was charged with the loss and Brubaker gave up two runs each in the inning and they were now down 10-6. Sanmartin returned for the 7th and let a guy on while getting an out. Keaton Winn came in and allowed a three run homer before finishing off the inning. Harris and Foley pitched the 8th and 9th without allowing a run. Smith is the closer here and while they don't really have a great holds guy Hentges and Winn are the best options despite todays appearances.
TEX: Lots of bullpen work today and one of the big names didn't get the job done. Chase Silseth pitched the 5th and Tyler Alexander pitched the 6th with the score tied 2-2. Neither guy allowed a run. With the top of the lineup coming up in the 7th they went with Jakob Junis for the second day in a row. He got an out, allowed a single, and gave up a two run dong. He would get out of the inning and was charged with a loss. Peyton Gray started the 8th and allowed lead off homer. He would eventually be pulled for Cole Winn who finished with inning with the team down 5-2. They need Junis to be the holds guy he has been if they are going to make a run.
ATH: Luis Medina pitched the 7th with the score 2-2 and allowed a two out double but picked up the win. Elvis Alvarado started the 8th and got two outs before allowing a single and was pulled for Drew Rom who got the final out. They had a 4-2 lead and both guys picked up holds. With a 5-2 lead they used Hogan Harris in the 9th and he was perfect picking up the save. Rom has so far done wonders for the bullpen and he could be a very deep holds option as their lefty. Harris is the closer and no one is threatening him for the role.
LAD: Down 2-1 in the 7th they brought in Edgardo Henriquez. He got a couple outs before allowing a single and being pulled for Alex Vesia. Vesia allowed a double and single which plated the inherited runner and one of his own and turned it into a 4-1 deficit. Kyle Hurt pitched the 8th and returned for the 9th where he was charged with two unearned runs. Jack Dreyer was in when the runs scored. The bullpen has struggled just like the team over the last two weeks but Diaz is the closer and Scott is the holds option.
MIL: The starter got them to the 8th and they went with Chad Patrick to start the inning. He got an out and allowed a couple singles before being pulled for Aaron Ashby who got a double play that ended the inning. Both guys picked up holds. DL Hall had the 9th with a 6-1 lead and allowed a solo homer but nothing else. Megill is the closer and Ashby is probably the reliever to roster for holds though Patrick and Senzatela will be in the mix as well.
HOU: They were down for all the bullpen innings but used the big three. Bryan Abreu faced the meat of the order in the 7th, Steven Okert had the 8th, and Josh Hader pitched the 9th. These are the three guys to roster in this bullpen.
SEA: With a 3-2 lead in the 7th they went Eduard Bazardo and he allowed a two out single but picked up a hold. Gabe Speier was used for the 8th since Alvarez was coming up and he got a hit. That was with two outs and the next batter also reached so they brought in Seranthony Domínguez. He almost blew the game after loading the bases on a ball that somehow dropped in no mans land just past the mound. He did strikeout the next batter and both guys picked up holds. Andrés Muñoz returned for the 9th and allowed a one out walk before getting out of the inning and picking up the save. Nice bounce back from the other night when he blew the save. Munoz is the closer and Bazardo and Speier are decent options for holds.
