Bullpen Notes 🗒️(6/30)

CWS: Tyler Schweitzer pitched 4 innings and picked up a save. He was the only pitcher out of the bullpen tonight. This was just a bulk outing so don't expect him to become part of the mix for saves. Bryan Hudson is still my favorite to see the first true 9th inning save chance.

PHI: No major news as they won the game in a blowout but they did send Chase Shugart down. He had struggled his last couple outings. Lou Trivino is back up for the time being.

TEX: After two innings last night Latz was back for the 9th tonight. He struck out a couple and picked up his 18th save. Peyton Gray had a hold in the 8th allowing just a hit. Latz is a stud and while people are expecting some regression he continues to prove them wrong. His uptick in fastball velo has been the difference. He has been one of the best since taking over the 9th.

NYM: They finally picked up a win and the bullpen was a big part of it. Brooks Raley pitched the 7th without any issues and picked up a save. Luke Weaver pitched the 8th and didn't allow a run picking up a hold. Devin Williams allowed a two out single in the 9th and picked up the save. Weaver hasn't allowed a run since April 30th and that was Williams first save in 12 days. Both guys as well as Raley could be on the move at the deadline.

WSN: They opened the game up in the top of the 8th but still turned to Orlando Ribalta in the bottom of the inning. No worries about his save chances as I would consider this a work day. Zak Kent got the final three outs just like yesterday and he appears to be the last man in the bullpen. Beeter, Poulin, and Ribalta seem to be the most likely to get a save but Lord could see one in a bulk setting as well.

BOS: I don't talk much about the bullpen but they have been pretty good all year. Tonight was not one of those nights. Coulombe, Weissert, Slaten, and Kahnle all gave up runs. Slaten had another rough outing and him and Weissert let the game get away. Kahnle gave up 4 in the 8th and while he was DFA'd after the game.

STL: The bullpen was up and down with a couple main guys struggling. George Soriano got three outs in the 6th and two outs in the 7th before allowing a walk that ended his night. JoJo Romero came on and allowed that runner to score giving up a couple hits in the 7th. He was back out for the 8th with a 5-2 lead and put two on while getting an out before getting pulled. With Stanek on paternity leave they turned to just activated Ryan Fernandez who let a Romero run in on a wild pitch, walked a couple batters but got two outs and picked up a hold. Riley O'Brien came on for the 9th and allowed a double but picked up the save. Romero has fallen off a cliff and seems to struggle more often than not. Soriano has cooled off as well. ROB has gotten it together somewhat but they have struggled to win so all of the guys numbers in June have been down.

CHC: They were up big for most of the game but it got close late. Javier Assad who had pitched the 6th and 7th gave up four in the 8th. That turned a comfortable 9-3 lead into a 9-7 game. He allowed one last walk and was pulled for Tyler Ferguson who got the final out of the 8th. Ferguson was back out for the 9th and got the first two out picking up a hold. They pulled him for Ryan Rolison to face the LHB coming up. Rolison got a flyout and picked up his 1st save. No word on where Webb was after having yesterday off but it is possible they wanted to give him an extra day after going four of five. Webb seems like he is the most likely to pick up a save but now we have Thornton and Rolison picking saves up this week. If they enter the mix it will turn into a big matchup based committee.

HOU: This is exhibit A of what a stud closer can do for a team. Tonight Enyel De Los Santos pitched the 6th, Steven Okert pitched the 7th and Bryan King pitched the 8th. They didn't allow a single batter to reach let alone a run. All three guys picked up holds. Josh Hader pitched the 9th and had a couple strikeouts while picking up save number 8. When you can build back from the 9th guys tend to fall back into place in the bullpen. King has been great in the 8th and De Los Santos was always pitching an inning above grade with Hader out. Now he can live in the 6th and 7th and he has looked good. Imagine what this team could do if Abreu was giving them anything? I still think they might go out and get a RHP to build the bullpen up even more.

ATH: Elvis Alvarado pitched another 6th inning. That has been his inning for his last two appearances. Geoff Hartlieb pitched the last three innings and gave up three runs. Barnett and Harris are the leading candidates for saves. I like Harris more. While Alvarado seems dead I still think there is a small chance he finds his way back. Harris doesn't have a long history as a closer and Barnett doesn't have any at all.

LAA: The bullpen let this one get away in the 6th. Chase Silseth was the first in and he allowed a couple inherited runners to score as well as two of his own. They rallied in the top of the next inning to make it a 5-3 game. After that they turned to Brent Suter and he got touched up for a couple more runs which put the game out of reach. Ryan Zeferjahn pitched the 8th and he seems to be out of the saves mix. That leaves Bachman as the favorite with Yates and Natera also somewhat in the mix.

SEA: Eduard Bazardo had a rough inning allowing a couple inherited runners to score and one of his own. It was in the 7th and it was a rare bad outing for him. They also used Munoz in the 9th with a 7-3 lead and he had no issues. He looked strong and seems to be back which is huge for this team.
