Bullpen Notes🗒️(7/23)
ATL: Dylan Dodd pitched a perfect 7th and picked up a hold. Tyler Kinley started the 8th and allowed a two run homer that made the score 6-5. He got two outs and got pulled for Danny Young who got out of the inning and both guys picked up holds. Raisel Iglesias had the 9th and he got two outs before allowing two hits and getting out of the inning. He picked up the save and remains one of the best closers in the game. Dylan Lee didn't pitch and they might have been giving him a little rest since he has over 45 innings on the season. He is still a great option for holds.
SDP: Neither of the big bullpen guys pitched. Bradgley Rodriguez did get into the game for the 8th. Prior to the game they traded Ron Marinaccio the pirates. He has been up and down all year and was a low leverage guy at best.
MIN: The bullpen began its work with the game tied at 1-1 in the 8th. Andrew Morris had the 8th allowing a single, Yoendrys Gomez allowed a couple two out walks in the 9th, Tommy Nance pitched a clean 10th, Taylor Rogers pitched the 11th allowing a walk but picking up a win, and Jack Anderson pitched the 12th also allowing a walk but picking up a save. I think that is the 12th different guy to record a save for them this year. Gomez has added some stability to the bullpen and it will be interesting to see if he ends up staying past the deadline. He was a guy they claimed off waivers. Morris would take over if Gomez is traded.
CLE: Hunter Gaddis started the 8th with a 1-0 lead and got an out while allowing a couple walks. They brought in Cade Smith who gave up a single to the first guy he faced. That tied the game and the run was charged to Gaddis. Smith ended up getting five outs in the 8th and 9th. Colin Holderman pitched the 10th and the 11th allowing just a walk and not allowing the ghost runner to score in either inning. They went with Erik Sabrowski in the 12th and after getting two outs he allowed a walk, and two singles that put them down 3-1. He was charged with one earned run and picked up the loss. Sabrowski continues to struggle though he had pitched yesterday and this was in extra's so I wouldn't be too worried. Gaddis and Holderman appear to be the better options for holds here and Smith is the closer.
TOR: With a 3-1 lead Tyler Rogers pitched a perfect 8th and Louis Varland pitched a perfect 9th. They picked up a hold and a save and when they are winning these two are as good as it gets late in the game. I would expect them to sell at the deadline so that could mean Rogers is on the move. I would expect Varland to remain even if they are completely blown away by an offer.
ARI: It was a 4-2 game in the 7th when they turned to Brandyn Garcia. He allowed a two out single and picked up a hold. They took a big lead in the 8th and went with Taylor Clarke. In the 9th with a 10-2 lead Ryan Thompson allowed four runs in his mop up appearance. Sewald has been struggling at closer and he could also be traded. They have a lot of good arms but Morillo and Garcia are likely to remain with the team. If they sell one of those guys will take over and my money is on Morillo.
STL: The scrubs in the bullpen took a beating. Justin Bruihl, Matt Svanson, and Gordon Graceffo allowed six runs in the 8th and 9th and turned what was a close game into a blowout. None of these guys are worth rostering right now.
KCR: Matt Strahm pitched the 6th allowing a two out walk and picking up a hold. John Schreiber had the 7th with a 2-0 lead and allowed two singles to start, followed but a couple outs and a three run homer that put them down 3-2. They tied it in the 8th and turned to Steven Cruz in the bottom of the inning but he got two outs and allowed a run scoring double. He would be charged with a loss. Lange is the closer here as we see by the usage today. Schreiber has been pitching later in the game but he should be on the move. Cruz is young and under control so he will likely stay and could end up as the closer or the 8th inning guy depending on what happens to Lange and Lynch. I am starting to think Cruz gets the first chance at saves if Lynch remains and Lange is moved.
DET: Tyler Holton and Jacob Waguespack got through the 6th and 7th with the team down 2-0. After taking a 3-2 lead they went with Drew Anderson who allowed a run and was charged with a blown save but picked up the win in the 8th. Drew Sommers started the 9th with a strikeout but let the next two on and was pulled for Kyle Finnegan. Finnegan got a double play on Sal Perez who is slow as an ox that ended the game. Sommers got a hold and Finnegan picked up a save. This is the frustration with Kenley who pitched last night and only threw 19 pitches but wasn't used tonight for the save chance. He is still the closer as this is only Finnegans second save but Kenley is not very reliable anymore. Some of Kenley's issues is performance but some it the managers puzzling usage patterns.
PIT: They finally DFA'd Dennis Santana. As mentioned above they added Ron Marinaccio. Marinaccio hasnt pitched in big spots but he could find himself in the middle innings. I wouldnt expect him to closer right away but as the bullpen stands now he is a couple good appearances away from being the best righty they have.
