Bullpen Notes🗒️(7/24)

COL: The bullpen took over with a 4-2 lead, one out, and a couple guys on in the 6th. Victor Vodnik was the first in and he got two outs to get out of the inning. Vodnik also got through the 7th with a perfect inning and picked up a hold. Antonio Senzatela pitched the 8th and allowed a two out single picking up a hold. Once again they turned to Jordan Romano for the 9th. He allowed the first two on but got the next three guys out to pick up the save. This is pretty much what I would expect for the time being here. Mejia might find his way into the 7th or 8th but Romano is the closer and he is risky to say the least. Antonio Senzatela has some low end holds value but he should be on the move soon and they don't win enough to roster him.

DET: Skubal got them into the 8th and they turned to Brenan Hanifee to get the last two outs of the inning. He picked up a hold. Tonight it was Kenley Jansen's turn in the 9th and with a 2-1 lead he pitched a perfect inning to pick up the save. Kenley threw 8 pitches so I would expect him to be available tomorrow but they seem to use him for about 60-70% of the chances. I wouldn't roster anyone else for saves and with Vest on the IL they don't have a set next in line. It is more of a committee approach.

PIT: The game was tied at 1-1 going into the 7th when they turned to the bullpen. Wilber Dotel allowed a couple singles but got through the inning. Mason Montgomery pitched a perfect 8th and Gregory Soto did the same in the 9th. With the game still tied at 1-1 in the 10th they went with Yohan Ramirez. His mom was watching him pitch for the first time and he allowed a couple runs (one was the ghost runner) and took the loss. Monty faced the one and two hitters while Soto got the middle of the order. I still think those two are locked in a battle for the closers spot but Dotel could move up in the bullpen as the righty with a couple good outings. A trade could always shake everything up.

CHC: Jacob Webb was the first man from the bullpen to see the mound in the 8th. He was facing the middle of the order which they will do as he is their best active reliever. He allowed a two out single but got through the inning. In the 9th Caleb Thielbar got one LHB and two RHB's out and ended up picking up the win. Gavin Hollowell pitched the 10th with a two run lead and allowed the ghost runner to score. He picked up the win. Interesting that we didn't see Thornton for the save chance but he has been nursing an injured heel and while he isn't on the IL he likely wasn't available.

WSN: With a 2-2 score in the 7th, no outs and a runner on they went with Tom Cosgrove. He loaded the bases before getting and out on a sac fly that put them down one. Littell was charged with the run. Orlando Ribalta got out of the 7th and pitched the 8th and Max Kranick pitched the 9th. This was mostly just guys getting work in but the game was close. It was a decent showing for the beleaguered bullpen and Beeter remains the best option for saves.

ARI: Nine up, nine down for the bullpen today. Juan Morillo had the 7th, Kevin Ginkel had the 8th, and Paul Sewald pitched the 9th. They went hold, hold, save and each guy struck out a batter. Sewald allowed a deep fly but the wind was blowing in so it stayed in the park and the game remained 3-2. Sewald has been shaky lately so this was a big conversion. He is the closer here and we stay tuned to see what they do at the deadline. Ginkel seems like the big spot pitcher and Morillo keeps working to get back to 8th where he was earlier in the year.

PHI: They were down 1-0 but used Jonathan Bowlan in the 8th and José Alvarado in the 9th. Bowlan struck out the side but both these guys are going to be needed down the stretch if they don't upgrade the backend of the bullpen.

NYY: Brent Headrick came on in the 8th with a couple guys on and while he loaded the bases he got the final two outs of the inning. He picked up a hold and he is a name to watch if they don't upgrade the bullpen. David Bednar got though the middle of the lineup in the 9th with no trouble and he picked up a save. Cruz has been pitching a lot and took a loss his last outing so that is probably why you didn't see him tonight. Bednar remains one of the better closers in the game.

BAL: Rico Garcia started the 8th with a 3-2 lead and allowed a solo homer after getting an out. He was charged with a blown save after getting out of the inning. Tyler Wells pitched the 9th allowing a hit. Andrew Kittredge got burned by an error in the 10th. He allowed the ghost runner to score and almost got out of the inning but a three run homer with two outs put them down 7-3. He ended up getting the loss as Wolfram got the final out of the inning. Wells is the closer here and the bullpen could look different in about a week.

ATL: They stayed away from the main guys in the bullpen for the most part but Young and Kinley got through the 6th without allowing a run. Elieser Hernandez pitched the 7th, 8th, and 9th and ended up picking up the win. With a 7-3 lead in the 10th they went with Dylan Lee who allowed three runs (one unearned). Lee continues to struggle but this was a extra inning outing so I am not that worried. Iglesias had the night off after pitching in back to back games.

CLE: Ugly day for the bullpen which saw Tim Herrin return. Gaddis, Herrin, Armstrong, and Festa all pitched and all 4 of them gave up at least one run. I wouldn't look too much into today as they were down and the bullpen is good enough that they have to use decent pitchers in blowouts. Herrin is a guy to keep an eye on if he is used later in the game than Sabrowski who is the other LHP.

TBR: Chris Roycroft picked up a save pitching three innings and allowing two runs. Bulk save no need to add or worry about him for fantasy.

NYM: Brooks Raley took the loss in the 7th. He allowed a couple to reach to start the inning but allowed only one run. A.J. Minter allowed a two run homer in the 8th to make it 4-1. Both these guys are LHPs so they both could be on the move.

LAD: Evan Phillips allowed a solo homer in the 8th that made the game 4-2. Tanner Scott pitched a perfect 9th to pick up the save. When Diaz returns these two guys become the holds men if Diaz can close. That would mean the rest of the bullpen takes a pretty big hit for holds. Vesia and the RHP they have been using will all pretty much be useless for fantasy.

MIA: Basically a bullpen game for them and like normal they used the bigger names early. Cade Gibson and Michael Petersen got through the 4th and 5th with both allowing an inherited run to score. Bacher pitched in the 6th and 7th with the score tied at 2-2. Tyler Zuber got an out to end the 7th but gave up a two run homer in the 8th after getting an out. He was charged with the loss. John King returned from the IL and walked two batters but got two outs to get out of the 8th inning. Faucher pitched the 9th with the team down 4-2. The usage of the bullpen is always weird with this team and if they trade Fairbanks I would expect more of this. Petersen makes the most sense to take over the 9th if they want a ture closer. They have now lost 10 in a row.

SDP: They also pretty much had a bullpen game with the starter only going two innings. Wandy Peralta blew another save allowing a solo homer to tie it at 2-2 in the 5th. He did get through the 6th. Bradgley Rodriguez got the first two out in the 7th before allowing a single and double and being pulled for Morejon who got the final out. Morejon pitched the 8th with a 4-2 lead and allowed a walk while picking up a win. Mason Miller pitched the 9th and was perfect picking up the save. We are all just waiting to see who is on the move here. If it is Miller, Morejon would take over and if both guys go Rodriguez probably sees action until Estrada returns.

BOS: The bullpen tired to blow this one but the offense battled back. Tyron Guerrero pitched in the 5th and though the 6th. They were up enough that he didn't record a hold. Greg Weissert had a 4-0 lead in the 7th and allowed a three run homer to make it 4-3. Garrett Whitlock pitched the 8th and the allowed a double and a single before a sac fly that tied the game. He would get out of the inning and pick up a win but was also charged with a blown save. They did get the lead back and with the score 6-4 in the 9th Aroldis Chapman allowed a lead off walk but got the save. I wouldn't be concerned about Whitlock. Everyone has a rough outing and he is still one of the best for holds.

HOU: They ended up with a bullpen game after the starter only got three outs. They also rallied from a 5-0 deficit. Sousa pitched the 6th, Abreu pitched the 7th, and Okert pitched the 8th. All three guys allowed a hit and all three guys picked up a hold. They had a four run lead by the 9th but still used Hader who struck out two in the non-save situation. This bullpen is rounding into form and Abreu could fill the RHP role that they desperately need. Okert is the best option for holds for the time being.

CWS: They had a 5-0 lead in the 6th when things fell apart. The starter allowed a run and left the bases loaded for Bryan Hudson. He was coming off a save his last outing but got pummeled here. The first guy he faced hit a double which plated all the starters runs and he allowed a two run homer and two more guys to reach before getting pulled with two outs. Seranthony Domínguez entered and loaded the bases with a walk, allowed an infield single that scored a run and another walk that walked in a run. He did get the final out and both runs were charged to Hudson who picked up a blown save and loss. They didn't rally and while Grant Taylor remains the best option in the bullpen they really need another high leverage arm. Domínguez should probably be DFA'd or put on the IL with an "injury".

ATH: The bullpen has been revenged by poor pitching and injuries but it didn't matter today. Geoff Hartlieb walked three guys while getting an out in the 6th with a 1-0 lead. He was bailed out by Jose Suarez who got a double play and pitched a perfect 7th. Both guys picked up holds. They turned to Elvis Alvarado for the 8th and he also got a double play ball that helped him pick up a hold. In the 9th Hogan Harris hit a batter but got another double play to end the game and pick up the save. Harris is the closer here but with the bullpen decimated Alvarado might be in the mix and Medina and Suarez are now pitching pretty late as well. Suarez has been good this last week and Medina has all the talent. Would be interesting to see what they do if Harris is traded. Seems like Medina or Alvarado but both have struggled when given the chance to close.

SEA: Eduard Bazardo allowed a couple inherited runners to score in the 6th and that was the difference in the game. He has struggled since the break and they could use some help in the bullpen.

TEX: Peyton Gray pitched the 6th allowing a single and picking up the win. They took the lead 5-3 and used Jakob Junis in the 7th against the top of the lineup. He was perfect picking up a hold. They mixed and matched in the 8th with Tyler Alexander getting two outs and allowing a single and Cole Winn getting out of the inning on a fly out. Both guys picked up holds. Latz pitched the 9th and allowed a double and a run on a wild pitched but it wasn't enough as they won 5-4 and he picked up the save. Junis is the guy for holds and Latz is the closer. They could use another experienced arm in the bullpen.

STL: They took a 3-2 into the 7th and used George Soriano against the top of the lineup. He put a guy on and allowed a two run homer blowing the save and taking a loss. Cant hate seeing him in that spot but it is too bad he didn't get the job done. Stanek and Gastelum finished the game with Gastelum allowing a run in the 9th. ROB is the closer and well see if he remains after the deadline since he might be the best available closer if Miller isn't on the market or the asking price is too high.

CIN: The hot streak continues with very good bullpen effort. Caleb Ferguson started the 6th and got two outs before Julian Garcia got the last out and ended up picking up the win. Brock Burke was perfect in the 7th and Tejay Antone allowed a double in the 8th but both guys picked up holds. Emilio Pagán was perfect in the 9th against the middle of the lineup and picked up his third save in as many games. They could creep back into the race if they keep winning but Pagan is the clear closer here and we wait to see if he remains after the deadline.
Antone is probably next up but it's another team that could see a major bullpen shake up if they do sell.

LAA: They were down for most of the bullpen innings. Kirby Yates pitched the 7th and walked a guy who would come around to score. Samy Natera Jr. had the 8th and had no issue with the game tied. Ryan Zeferjahn pitched the 9th and walked a guy but got through the inning. Chase Silseth pitched the bottom of the 10th with the game tied and allowed a lead off single and a walk to load the bases before giving up a ground rule double that plated two runs to end it. Bad luck that it was two runs but one was the ghost runner. No sign of Bachman which is now pretty concerning. Zef is the closer here and you should be seeing that Joyce is hitting 100+ with ease in the minors so he will be Zef's main threat for the 9th.

SFG: Dylan Smith pitched the 7th picking up a hold. Jason Foley had the 8th with a 6-4 lead and allowed a two run homer getting charged with a blown save. If he remains he could be a closer option here though tonight was not a good performance. Erik Miller pitched the 9th in what would be the closers spot and walked a couple but sent the game to the 10th. Caleb Kilian had the 10th and got a double play where the runner was thrown out at third to get out of the inning. He picked up the win. Miller feels like the closer here and we will have too see if he remains past the deadline. I think he will.
