LAB REPORTS
Bullpen Notes🗒️(7/6)
NYY: Best way to avoid a struggling bullpen is to keep them out of the game. The starter Cam Schlittler went eight innings and they turned to Bednar in the 9th. They had a 5-1 lead at the time and Bednar threw a perfect inning. He has been great the last couple months and continues to be a great closer and the most reliable pitcher in the bullpen.
TBR: They were down when the bullpen got involved. Outside of the top three right now I am surprised how bad the bullpen looks. Today it was Chris Roycroft who was making his first appearance and he gave up a couple runs. They really could use a couple depth guys to strengthen the bullpen.
WSN: They brought Cole Henry backup after a month or so in the minors (He was sent back down after the game). He had a 12-7 lead when he came in for the 7th and had no issue in that inning. As expected he tried to get through the 8th he got a couple outs but allowed four runs. Three came on a three run homer so it happened pretty quickly. They still had a 12-11 and brought in Clayton Beeter who got the last out of the 8th and pitched a perfect 9th. Beeter is the best option they have except they use him in the fireman role. He gets the biggest spots but not always the 9th. Poulin and Ribalta are the other guy in the committee.
ATL: Didier Fuentes battled though the 6th picking up a hold but allowing baserunners and a run. Dylan Lee picked up a hold in the 7th allowing just a walk and facing the top of the order. Tyler Kinley pitched the 8th and picked up a hold allowing just a walk. With a 3-2 lead in the 9th they turned to Raisel Iglesias who let two on and got two out but faced Soto. He got the count to two strikes before allowing a three run homer on a fastball down the middle. It was his first blown save in his last 35 chances. In the 10th Owen Murphy allowed the ghost runner and another to score after getting two outs in the inning. He ended up with the loss. Nothing really changes in the bullpen as it was just a bad night for Raisel.
NYM: They used most of the lower leverage guys until the 9th when they took the lead 5-3. As expected they turned to Devin Williams and he allowed a hit and homer that tied the game at 5-5. He continued to struggle allowing two more to reach but getting two outs before they pulled him. Brooks Raley got the last out and ended up picking up the win. Luke Weaver pitched the 10th and he allowed his first run in months even though it was just the ghost runner. He did end up picking up the save. He is still the 8th inning guy and Williams is still the closer.
STL: They used the scrubs in the 7th with a 3-0 lead and it didn't go well. Justin Bruihl who had already pitched in the 5th and 6th faced the first batter and let him on. They went to Ryan Fernandez who faced three batters and all three reached. One error by Fernandez resulted in an unearned run and one run was charged to Bruihl. They finally brought in Stanek who loaded the bases before allowing another run that put them down 4-3. Tough spot for him as he had to get three outs with two on. Not sure why they went this route as the main guys had yesterday off.
MIL: Megill was the only one of the big three that pitched and they came back in the 7th to win. Chad Patrick pitched the 7th and 8th without out allowing a batter to reach. They had a 4-3 lead at the time and he picked up a hold. Patrick has some value as a bulk guy since he gets a decent amount of saves and holds. Megill came on for the 9th and allowed a leadoff single but got the three outs he needed. Nice work to protect the one run lead and get the save. Megill has completely flipped the script from early in the year and is looking like the guy from last year prior to his injury in August.
LAD: Brock Stewart pitched the 7th picking up a hold. Don't look now but he is moving up in the bullpen and has probably already surpassed Hurt as a holds option. Alex Vesia walked a couple guys in the 8th but did pick up the hold. He doesn't see too many full innings but tonight he did and he is a very good holds option. Tanner Scott let the game get away in the 9th. He struck out the first guy he faced before allowing a walk, single, RBI double, intentional walk, strikeout, and a double that scored two but saw the go ahead run get thrown out at the plate. Edgardo Henriquez pitched the 10th and 11th and allowed the ghost runner to score in the 10th. He ended up picking up the win and has finally started to harness his stuff. He has a lot of potential for holds. Scott's job as closer is safe but some of these other bullpen guys have been looking very good lately.
COL: Zach Agnos pitched until the 9th since they were down. After they tied the game they turned to Antonio Senzatela in the 9th and he pitched very well sending the game to extra's. Brennan Bernardino had a chance at a save in the 10th but he allowed the ghost runner to score. He was eventually pulled with guys on first and second for Jimmy Herget who got a double play to end the inning. Herget pitched in the 11th and after a walk and a sacrifice allowed the game ending single. The ghost runner scored and he was charged with a loss. I'll keep Herget in the mix for saves but Jordan Romano might be the current closer on this team if you can believe that. He is firmly in the mix.
