Bullpen Notes🗒️(8/23)
STL: Luis Gastelum pitched the 5th with a 3-0 lead and allowed a one out single. Justin Bruihl had the 6th and allowed a one out double while picking up a hold. They added a run to make it 4-0 and used Ryne Stanek in the 7th and George Soriano in the 8th. Both guys pitched perfect innings but due to the score didn't record holds. Riley O'Brien had the 9th as the closer in a non-save and it was a disaster. He allowed a lead off double and got two outs before giving up 6 runs with the last scoring on a two run homer that ended it. This is why I hate seeing closers in these types of situations. ROB is still the closer and hopefully today was just a one off lapse and not something more.
TBR: Cam Booser pitched a perfect 7th with a 3-0 lead. Kevin Kelly returned from yesterdays struggle and pitched a perfect 8th. Both guys picked up holds. Bryan Baker had the 9th and allowed a lead off dong and another runner reached on an error but he picked up the save. Baker and Kelly are the two guys to roster if you are looking for saves and holds.
NYY: Nice outing for a couple of the main guys in the bullpen. Paul Blackburn pitched the 5th and 6th and picked up the win. With the score 5-2 in the 7th Ryan Yarbrough pitched a perfect inning and he would return for the 8th where he got a couple outs and allowed a run. He would pick up a hold. Brent Headrick got the final out of the 8th and pitched the 9th allowing a lead off double. As I have said Bednar is the closer and Headrick and Blackburn are both guys to roster for holds.
MIA: The starter got in trouble and they used Michael Petersen to get the final out of the 5th. The game was tied and he walked the bases loaded but he got the final out with a strikeout. He would pick up the win. With a 3-1 lead in the 6th they turned to Calvin Faucher who allowed a walk, and double that scored a run but picked up a hold. With a 5-2 lead in the 7th and 8th they went with Jack Ralston who was perfect in the 7th and allowed a couple on in the 8th. He would pick up a hold. He has had a great year in the minors and they threw him right into the fire. Pete Fairbanks struggled through the 9th with a 6-2 lead and it was mainly due to him making an error. He didn't allow a run and he is the closer here. They will use pretty much anyone in the rest of the bullpen for holds but I maintain that Petersen is the best option for holds.
HOU: Enyel De Los Santos came on in the 5th with the team up 6-3. He got one out and allowed three runs before getting pulled for Kai-Wei Teng who got out of the inning. Teng would pitch the 6th without allowing a run as well. With the game still tied Steven Okert allowed a two out solo dong in the 7th and would end up with the loss. AJ Blubaugh pitched the 8th and Josh Hader had the 9th to get some work in. I'm not worried about Okert as he is still a great option for holds with Abreu. Hader is the closer.
ATH: Brady Basso started and gave up three in the 1st. Perkins the bulk guy got them to the 7th with the game tied at 6-6. Scott Blewett pitched a perfect 7th and picked up a hold. Luis Medina pitched the 8th with a 7-6 lead and allowed a lead off single but after walking Alvarez got out of the inning without allowing a run. He would pick up a hold. Hogan Harris pitched the 9th today and picked up the save. Like I said after Alvarado's save last night Harris is still the closer here. He is the only guy I would roster in this bullpen.
DET: Jacob Waguespack and Ty Madden gave up five runs in the first three innings. Andrew Sears got the game to the 8th and allowed five runs of his own. Kyle Finnegan pitched the 8th and gave up a run as well. Finnegan is getting tougher to roster for holds and I would go with Tyler Holton instead. Kenley is the closer.
KCR: Mason Black came with a three run lead in the 5th, one on, and one out. He would allow three runs to score and tie the game. He retuned for the 6th and walked a batter. Connor Thomas got an out in the 6th and allowed Black's run to score. John Schreiber would finish the inning and pick up the win. They had 9-5 lead when the inning started. Jose Cuas picked up a hold in the 7th despite loading the bases and walking in a run. Nate Pearson pitched the 8th with a 9-7 lead and picked up a hold. They did use Steven Cruz in the 9th with the score 11-7 so he didn't pick up a save. Cruz and Pearson are the two guys to roster if you are chasing saves or holds.
NYM: With a 0-0 score Dedniel Nunez pitched the 7th and allowed a single. In the 8th they used Daniel Duarte who allowed a one out single and double that scored a run and put them down 1-0. They tied it in the 9th and used Kodai Senga in the bottom half of the inning. He would get an out and allow a solo dong that ended the game. He picked up the loss. Senga is the closer but there are going to be some tough outings and Duarte remains the best option for holds.
CWS: Sean Newcomb pitched a scoreless 1st and 2nd. Erick Fedde pitched the next four innings and got the game into the 7th with a 0-0 score. Hagen Smith came on with a couple on and got out of the 7th and pitched a perfect 8th. Grant Taylor got another shot at a save with a 1-0 lead in the 9th. He struggled after getting an out the next three would reach and one would score. He would load the bases before ending the inning with a strikeout. They have really used Taylor like the closer all week and he has a save, a win, and a blown save win. I don't think todays blown save will change the fact that he is the best in the bullpen and sort of the closer but it might open the door to more of the committee they have used all year. Hudson, Newcomb and Hicks could all reenter the mix.
TEX: With a 5-0 lead the went to Peyton Gray in the 7th. He pitched a perfect inning but returned for the 8th and allowed a lead off homer before getting an out and getting the hook. Tyler Alexander came in and got one out of the four batters he faced while allowing two of them to score. Chase Silseth would get the final out of the inning and picked up a hold. With a 5-3 lead in the 9th Jacob Latz allowed a lead off double and walked a guy intentionally but didn't allow a run picking up the save. No Junis today is the big news since they need him and I would have expected to see him in the 8th when things got ugly. Keep an eye for an update but Latz remains the closer.
COL: They were down for all of the bullpen innings. Jordan Romano got the dreaded work inning in and he was perfect. He is the closer here and a risky option for saves. Brennan Bernardino who didn't pitch is the best option for holds.
SFG: JT Brubaker pitched in the 4th, 5th, and 6th. He allowed a run. Sam Hentges pitched in the 6th and 7th after last nights rough outing and didn't allow a run. Trent Harris pitched the 8th. All of these guys innings were with the team down. This is your weekly reminder that Brubaker isn't going to be closing or have any value other than a bulk guy. Smith is the closer and Hentges is the best option for holds.
BOS: Tyron Guerrero pitched the 8th and allowed a lead off single but got a double play to end the inning. They had a 5-4 lead so he picked up a hold. Aroldis Chapman pitched the 9th and he was perfect picking up a save. Guerrero faced the middle of the order and hadn't pitched for a couple days. Him and Miller are the best options for holds and since this is a good team you could roster both.
SEA: Despite the score they used a couple of the big guns in the bullpen. Jose Ferrer got two outs in the 5th to keep the game at 6-2. He would return for the 6th and allow a run. Eduard Bazardo pitched the 7th and got a double play to get him out of the inning. Michael Rucker got mauled in the 8th and allowed 7 runs while getting a couple outs. Andrés Muñoz is the closer here and despite how poor the record is they are still in the mix.
MIN: With the score 1-1 Kody Funderburk had an awful 6th inning. A guy reached on an error but he was caught stealing. He would walk the next two and they would bring in Jeff Hoffman. Hoffman walked the bases loaded and gave up a two run double and two RBI single before getting out of the inning. Both guys were charged with two runs and Funderburk picked up the loss. Travis Adams pitched the 7th giving up two runs and Taylor Rogers pitched the 8th allowing one run. Ugly day for the bullpen but they didn't use any of the top guys besides Hoffman who is always a risk.
LAD: They had a 4-0 lead for the bullpen innings. Edgardo Henriquez pitched the 7th, Brock Stewart pitched the 8th, and Alex Vesia pitched the 9th. Vesia was the only one who allowed a runner and was also facing LHBs. We are still waiting to see if anyone wins out the coveted 8th inning spot but it appears several of these guys will be in the mix for holds. Scott is the closer.
CIN: With the score 1-1, one out, and the bases loaded in the 7th they brought in Luis Mey. He would allow all three runners to score plus one of his own and was charged with a blown save. They have been using him in bigger spots but this one was too much. Pagan is the closer and the 8th is up for grabs with Santillan back, Antone and Burke in the mix.
ARI: Gerardo Carrillo was called back up and he pitched the 4th and got two outs in the 5th. Taylor Clarke finished off the 5th and pitched the 6th. With the team down 3-1 in the 7th they used Jonathan Loáisiga and he allowed a two out single. He would get a win after they rallied to take the lead in the bottom of the 7th. Juan Morillo had the 8th and he hit a batter but got out of the inning picking up a hold. Brandyn Garcia started the 9th but after a two out single got pulled for Kevin Ginkel. A man would reach on an error but he would get the final out of the inning. Garcia got a hold and Ginkel got a save. No sign of Justin Martinez so maybe they are giving him two days off in between appearances. I haven't seen any update on an injury but keep an eye out. Garcia and Ginkel remain the guys to roster for saves and holds. They are in the mix for the 9th with Jmart.
MIL: Grant Anderson started the 6th with the team down 2-1. He let a couple on and got a couple out before being pulled for DL Hall who allowed one Anderson run to score on an error. Hall returned and pitched a perfect 7th. Bryse Wilson got through the 8th allowing just a single. With the team down 3-2 Aaron Ashby pitched the 9th and allowed a leadoff dong that made it 4-2. Megill is the closer here and Ashby is the best option for holds.
ATL: Didier Fuentes came in with a 3-1 lead, one out, and two on in the 6th. He would get a double play and groundout to get out of the inning. He retuned for the 7th and allowed a couple singles but didn't give up a run. He picked up a hold. Dylan Lee started the 8th and got a couple outs but allowed a double and triple that made the score 3-2. He would be pulled for Raisel Iglesias but he would pick up a hold. Iglesias got the final out of the 8th and pitched the 9th. He gave up a hit and walked a batter in the 9th but turned a double play to end it and picked up the save. Iggy is the closer and Lee is the 8th inning man even though he has struggled lately.
