Bullpen Notes🗒️(9/2)
CIN: Pierce Johnson got the final two outs of the 6th with a 4-3 lead and a couple on. He picked up a hold. Tejay Antone pitched the 7th and got a double play after a lead off walk to pick up a hold. Tony Santillan had the 8th with a 7-3 lead and Emilio Pagán had the 9th. Santillan walked a guy and Pagán was perfect. This is pretty much how they would like the bullpen to look but Santillan has been pretty bad in the 8th all year when he hasn't been hurt or covering the 9th. Pagán the closer remains the only guy I would roster here.
WSN: They DFA'd Tom Cosgrove which wasn't shocking but he had pitched in some big innings. Today they got smoked with Riley Cornelio and Max Kranick allowing 8 runs over four innings. Kranick could be next on the chopping block since his ERA is back over 9. Terrible bullpen and I would avoid everyone.
ATL: The starter went three so it was mostly a bullpen game. Dylan Dodd pitched in the 4th and Didier Fuentes had the 8th with neither allowing a run. No one else of note pitched from the bullpen. I still like both these guys for holds with Dodd being the deeper sleeper of the two.
TEX: Robby Ahlstrom gave up another three runs with the team down. There was a time when people thought he could move into the later innings but his ERA is back above 6. They need help late but he just isn't the guy.
ATH: Jose Suarez was finally put down (DFA). I do feel kind of bad as he had jumped into bigger spots before getting hurt and never looked right since returning from the IL. Hogan Harris pitched a perfect 9th with the score 9-2. He was perfect and it does appear that Alvarado is ahead of him for the closers spot but I think both will still see chances.
BAL: With a 3-2 lead in the 7th Rico Garcia got the final out. He would return for the 8th and get a couple outs before allowing a double and getting pulled for Yennier Cano who faced one batter and got him out. Both guys picked up holds. Newly crowned closer Andrew Kittredge had the 9th and he got two quick outs but allowed back to back doubles that tied the game. Kitty was charged with a blown save and Josh Walker got the final out of the 9th and the first of the 10th. Alex Hoppe got the next two outs in the 10th without allowing a run. With a 5-3 lead in the 11th Grant Wolfram came on and struggled. He would allow the ghost runner to score and a couple more after that to take the loss and the blown save. I would guess Kitty's hold on the 9th is probably in question so Garcia likely finds himself back in the mix. Cano is lurking as well but on a team that can afford to lose all hands are on deck. I still think Kitty ends up with the most saves the rest of the way.
COL: They were down until extra's and Jordan Romano and Brennan Bernardino had pitched back to back so they weren't available. Mejia, Herget, Hill, and Frasso didn't allow any runs from the 7th to the 11th. Blas Castano pitched the 11th and allowed the ghost runner plus one more but he would get the win when they rallied in the bottom of the inning. Romano is still the guy to roster here and Bernardino is a very deep option for holds.
PHI: Jonathan Bowlan pitched the 8th with the score 0-0. He allowed a lead off dong and that was the only run scored in the game. He was the only bullpen pitcher used and he was charged with the loss. The battle for the 8th inning rages here as all of the guys remain wildly inconsistent. Duran is the closer and probably the only guy worth rostering.
ARI: Bullpen game with Justin Martinez not available after pitching last night. Kevin Ginkel had the 4th and was perfect. With the score 0-0 in the 7th Brandyn Garcia worked around a lead off single to Harper. Jonathan Loáisiga pitched a perfect 8th and picked up the win. That left the 9th with a 1-0 lead to Juan Morillo. He faced the top of the lineup with both LHBs and allowed a two out walk but picked up the save. Morillo has now picked up the last two saves which are the only two of the last couple weeks. It appears that he is the leader for the 9th since they haven't used JMart in a save situation. I still feel like it is a committee but JMart and Morillo are probably the guys to roster with Garcia being option three.
TBR: The starter got crushed and we saw Steven Matz pitch a couple scoreless innings. With the team down 6-4 Cam Booser got through the 6th but allowed a couple to reach in the 7th. Manuel Rodríguez came in and hit a batter before allowing a three run double. He would return for the 8th and allow a dong to Soto. Both him and Booser were charged with two runs. Bryan Baker pitched the 9th after having the last couple days off.
PIT: Down 3-1 in the 6th Brandon Eisert pitched a scoreless inning. Carmen Mlodzinski pitched the 7th, 8th, and 9th and was perfect with a couple strikeouts. Camilo Doval had the 10th and he allowed a couple runs that put them down 5-3. He picked up the loss. Tough one for Doval and it was him or Yates in the 10th. They cannot afford to drop games like this.
SFG: With a 3-1 lead Reiver Sanmartin allowed a couple hits and got a couple outs. Ryan Walker would come on and get the final out. Walker would return for the 7th and let two on while getting an out. Both of those guys would pick up holds. Carson Seymour came on for Walker but allowed an inherited runner to score which made it 3-2. Seymour would return for the 8th and allow a lead off double with that runner coming around to score. He was charged with a blown save. Jason Foley pitched the 9th and let two on but no one scored. He would pick up the win and in the 10th with a 5-3 lead they went with Dylan Smith. He allowed the ghost runner to score right away on a single but got the next three out to pick up the save. Smith is locked in as the closer and Seymour and Harris are the best options for holds but both are very deep sleepers.
MIN: A majority of the bullpen guys pitched and they were all pitching with the team down or tied. Minter and Gomez pitched the 8th, 9th, and 10th and didn't allow any runs. Tommy Nance got out of the 11th but in the 12th he would end up allowing five runs. That was too much too overcome. Gomez is the closer and Minter who was pitching on his birthday is the best option for holds.
DET: Tyler Kinley got the final out of the 6th and pitched the 7th with a 5-2 lead. He would pick up a hold. Drew Sommers faced four batters in the 8th getting one out and loading the bases. They brought in Kenley Jansen for whatever reason and he would allow all three inherited runners to score while getting an out. It was ugly and he picked up the blown save while Sommers got a hold. Tyler Holton would get the final out in the 8th with the game tied. Him and Jacob Waguespack got the game to the 11th without allowing any runs. Kyle Finnegan had a 6-5 lead in the 11th and allowed the ghost runner to score which tied it. He was charged with a blown save but returned for the 12th with the team up five and picked up the win. No idea why they used Kenley in the 8th but it failed. He is a risky option for saves. Sommers and Finnegan suck and shouldn't be rostered for holds.
KCR: Jose Cuas started the 6th with a 6-4 lead and faced four batters, getting one out, and allowing two runs. Connor Thomas would come in and get the final two outs but allowed an inherited run to score. Cuas was charged with a blown save and picked up the loss. Craig Kimbrel pitched the 7th, Nate Pearson pitched the 8th, and Alex Lange pitched the 9th allowing a couple runs. Steven Cruz is the closer here and the only guy I would consider rostering in the bullpen.
MIA: Cade Gibson got the final out of the 5th but would pick up the win after they rallied in the 6th. Josh Ekness pitched the 6th with a 7-6 lead and walked two but didn't allow a run. He would walk the lead off batter in the 7th and Jack Ralston got the next three out. Both guys picked up holds. Michael Petersen pitched a perfect 8th and picked up a hold. That left the 9th for Calvin Faucher who was perfect protecting the 9-6 lead to pick up the save. The bullpen was used very nicely tonight. I would like to call Facuher the closer but his last two outings were in the 6th. I do think we can remove Ekness from the mix. That leaves Petersen and Faucher but I have very little confidence that they will use either strictly as the closer and I expect others to get chances as well. It's a committee in my option.
CHC: They were down for 6-5 when they used Trent Thornton to get out of the 4th. He would get an out in the 5th before Ryan Rolison got the next five outs. Daniel Palencia allowed a run in the 7th and had the trainer come out at one point but it appears his shoe had come off. Caleb Thielbar pitched the 8th. They had Jacob Webb start the 9th but he got an out, hit a batter, and took a liner off the forearm. He was pulled and eventually would be charged with two runs. X-Rays were negative on the forearm but that doesn't mean we have avoided an IL stint just yet. I would expect Palencia to see the next save chance but if they don't think he is ready we could see any of Thornton, Zeferjahn, or Thielbar. Expect a short term committee with Palencia potentially having a chance to take over.
MIL: Beautiful day for the bullpen. JoJo Romero picked up the win pitching the 5th. Senzatela pitched the 6th, Uribe pitched the 7th, and Ashby pitched the 8th. They all looked good though Uribe seemed like he was flexing his glove hand and landed awkwardly on one pitch. All three guys picked up holds. Megill pitched the 9th with a 9-5 lead and allowed a two out single but nothing else. Uribe is the best option for holds but Ashby is firmly in the mix as well.
CHW: With the score 0-0 Sean Newcomb got the final out of the 6th. He would pitched the 7th and return for the 8th where he loaded the bases before allowing a two run single with two outs. He would pick up the loss and Tyler Davis would get the final out of the game. They like to do this bulk stuff with Taylor and Newcomb. I think Taylor is the best option for saves but with his usage Hudson will be involved and possibly Newcomb as well.
HOU: AJ Blubaugh pitched the 8th with the score 0-0 and he allowed a lead off triple, a walk, and a single in the inning but managed to avoid giving up a run. He would pick up the win. With the score 2-0 in the 9th Josh Hader pitched a perfect 9th and picked up the save. Blubaugh has been pitching in bigger spots but Okert and Abreu are the better options for holds.
LAA: Ryan Watson pitched the 8th and Ben Joyce pitched the 9th with the game tied at 1-1. Luke Murphy got two outs in the 10th but then allowed five runs to score. He was charged with the loss and Blake Weiman got the final out of the inning. Joyce is the closer here and Natera should be the best option for holds or the occasional save.
NYY: The started got the game to the 9th and with a 1-1 score David Bednar allowed a two out single but no runs. He would pick up a win. With a 6-1 lead in the 10th Michael Fulmer pitched an allowed two runs to score. Bednar is the closer and Blackburn and Headrick are the two options for holds.
LAD: With a 5-4 lead in the 8th they elected to use Tanner Scott against the top of the order. He allowed a lead off double that would come around to score and tie the game. He was charged with a blown save. Jack Dreyer had the 9th with the game tied and pitched a perfect inning. Brock Stewart allowed the first three to reach and put them down 8-5 in the 10th. He picked up the loss. Scott will occasionally get used in spots like this against the best part of the lineup but he is still the closer. The rest of the bullpen has guys who get holds but too many options to roster anyone but maybe Vesia.
STL: They went with a bullpen game and I will pick things up in the 6th which saw George Soriano come on with the team down 3-2. He would allow a two run dong that made it a 5-2 deficit. Ryne Stanek and Luis Gastelum pitched the 7th and 8th. Gastelum pitched with the score was tied at 5-5. Justin Bruihl allowed a two out double in the 9th but got out of the inning to send the game to the 10th. He would pick up a win. With an 8-5 lead in the 10th Riley O'Brien allowed the ghost runner to score but converted the save. He remains a solid closer but Soriano and Stanek are risky guys for holds.
