Bullpen Notes 6/23/26
HOU
Enyel De Los Santos gave up a couple runs in the 7th. He had gotten out of the 6th and when he returned for the 7th he gave up a single and a homer. Nate Pearson also gave up a couple runs that were unearned in the 8th. Hader pitched a perfect 9th with the game tied. Logan VanWey got the win pitching both the 10th and the 11th. De Los Santos can be cut and Harder and King are the only two guys that I would roster in this bullpen.
TOR
Lots of bullpen innings in this loss. Varland had the night off after pitching in two of three. Hoffman got two outs in the 8th and they turned to Rogers for the 9th. He struggled and was hurt by an error. He loaded the bases allowing three singles while getting one out. The error was a catchers interference call which would have been the 2nd out but turned into a run. A sacrifice fly later the game was tied. Braydon Fisher took the loss pitching the 10th and losing in the 11th after allowing three runs. Rogers is the 8th inning guy and I wouldn't worry about today. On days when Varland is off Hoffman might get the chance now but neither Rogers or Hoffman have had much success in the 9th this year.
NYY
They used Fernando Cruz to get the final two outs of the 6th and he picked up a hold. Brent Headrick pitched the 7th and got two outs in the 8th picking up a hold. He did allow one man to reach and they brought in Bednar to get the final out of the 8th. After that Bednar pitched a perfect 9th picking up a hold. Bednar is a good closer and Cruz is one of the better holds guys.
SEA
Strong game for the bullpen tonight. Ferrer had no issue in the 7th getting a hold. Bazardo allowed a single and a two out walk in the 8th picking up a hold. He has turned into the 8th inning guy with Brash on the IL and is worth rostering if you need holds. Munoz picked up the save in the 9th with a perfect inning striking out three. He has now converted 4 saves in a row and this was the best outing of the season. He hit 102 on the gun and we might be seeing him turn back into one of the best like last year.
MIA
A lot of the guys in the bullpen got a break today with Sandy pitching. They only used Zuber and Bachar prior to the 9th with Zuber giving up a run. Fairbanks pitched the 9th with a four run lead and naturally allowed two runs with two outs. This is why you hate seeing a closer in a non-save and it puts a little damper on Fairbanks recent run. His role is not effected as he is still the closer.
PHI
Pretty rough 8th inning for Kerkering. They had a 6-5 lead when he entered but he hit the 1st two batters and allowed a three run homer to the next. After that he was able to get out of the inning. They went on to rally in the 9th and he picked up the win. This is concerning because Kerkering has a chance to replace Keller in the 8th. By no means does this take him out of the mix but José Alvarado is lurking. I'd say it is a coin flip of who gets the 8th inning right now. Could be mainly matchup based.
WSN
Every now and than the lights get too bright for mid level guys. PJ Poulin pitched the 1st but the next man out of the bullpen in the 6th was Mitchell Parker. He got through the 6th but was charged with a run in the 7th making the game 5-3. Orlando Ribalta allowed the inherited runner to score and got an out in the 8th before being pulled for Dicky Love. Lovelady got an out but loaded the bases before he got pulled for Beeter. Beeter allowed a bases clearing double which made the game 6-5 and Lovelady was charged with all three runs. After taking a two run lead they elected to go with Brad Lord in the 9th to try and lock the door. He got two quick outs and then the wheels came off. 5 batters and couple homers later he had allowed 5 runs blown the save and ended up with the loss. Schultz got the last out after allowing a couple more runs. Lord had been great the last couple weeks and earned this. It will be interesting to see what they do but I would think he might get another shot. Like all year Beeter was used in the big spot prior to the 9th. No Varland so maybe him and Lord had swapped roles prior to the beatdown tonight. Beeter is the only guy worth rostering and even he is a stretch.
CHC
Not much here as they had Jayden Murray pitching and allowing runs to make it close in the 9th. Maton and Rolison pitched so I do still feel like Webb is the most likely to see a save and Thielbar might get a matchup chance.
MIL
Today is how the bullpen should look. Ashby in the 7th with a hold, Uribe in the 8th with a hold, and Megill in the 9th with the save. The only runner allowed was by Uribe. Good bullpen and depending on league type all three guys should be on a roster.
LAD
Brock Stewart made his first appearance since returning. It was a blowout but he pitched the 9th and allowed a lead off homer. Give him some time and he could end up being a nice holds guy or just stay mid level.
MIN
Newly promoted Austin Voth got smoked allowing 6 runs with 5 of them being earned. Taylor Rogers pitched in the 9th and allowed 5 runs as well. You can cut Rogers as he is just a mid level guy and has been replaced by Banda late.
CWS
The three guys I have listed in the committee had all pitched back to back nights so they were resting. They ended up only needed Sean Newcomb tonight as he pitched the final 2.2IP and picked up the save. At this point anyone could see a chance in the 9th here but I do still think Newcomb is more of a bulk guy. I would still rather have all three of the other guys over him. I need to see how the bullpen is used when the main guys are available before calling anyone the new closer.
ARI
Really good game until the 9th for ARI. Morillo got an out to end the 7th with the score 0-0. Ginkel pitched the 8th and ended up picking up the win. They did turn to Sewald in the 9th with a 4-0 lead. They had taken that lead in a long top of the 9th with Sewald warming. Sewald struggled right out of the gate allowing a leadoff double. He ended up getting charged with 3 runs and pulled for Brandyn Garcia who picked up the save. Ginkel is quickly taking over the 8th and really I would say should be added in formats with holds. As for Sewald I am not worried as was pitching in a non-save. He's still the closer but keep track on how he does next outing and beyond.
STL
Pretty much anyone who was high leverage or mid leverage had pitched back to back nights and was ideally off. They turned to preseason darling Matt Svanson and he got mauled giving up 4 in the 9th with the score 0-0. No need to roster him and no change in the bullpen. The main guys are still locked in their roles.
BOS
They had a four run lead in the 9th and turned to Garrett Whitlock. He allowed a one out homer. That made it a 5-2 game. Whitlock is a strong holds guy and the likely candidate to take over the 9th if Chapman gets traded as long as he stays on the team though the deadline.
LAA
They had a 5-1 lead the whole time the bullpen was in but we did get a look into the bullpen thinking. Ryan Zeferjahn pitched the 8th against the 8, 9, and 1 hitters striking out all three. Sam Bachman pitched the 9th against the middle of the lineup. I would say this is Bachman's job to lose. He seems most likely to get the next chance but if he blows it the door opens back up. He could also be used like Beeter in WAS pitching in the biggest spots but time will tell.
ATL
Somewhat odd usage of the bullpen tonight. Robert Suarez wasn't used so maybe something was up. That led to Carlos Carrasco trying to get though the 7th with a one run lead and he did not. He allowed a leadoff homer that tied the game. After that they turned to Lee to finish the 7th and pitched the 8th with no trouble. Raisel Iglesias got though the 9th to send it to extra's but he allowed a single to the leadoff hitter in the 10th. That scored the ghost runner and ended the game. He was charged with a loss but he is still the closer. No need to worry about that.
SDP
They used most of the bullpen today after the starter didn't start but only got two outs in the 2nd. The backend of the bullpen was strong with Mason Miller pitching the 9th and 10th without allowing a run in the tie game to pick up the win. He is a stud.
SFG
Starters just keep eating up innings for this team. They did turn to Caleb Kilian in the 9th and he was the only guy from the bullpen who pitched. It wasn't the greatest inning as he let a couple guys reach base but he got a strikeout to end it. He's the closer and he would have to blow a save or two before we have a conversation about who is next up. I think he is worth adding if you need saves. Slightly behind Lange in my opinion and ranks.
