Bullpen Notes 6/20/26
DET
Tyler Holton picked up a hold pitching the 7th and 8th. He doesn't offer much value as he is more of a mid leverage guy though he is the best LHP they have in the bullpen. Kenley Jansen picked up his 2nd save in as many days. He allowed a hit and a walk but got the three outs and only threw 10 pitches. He's the closer here and if they can start winning games he might actually start picking up some saves.
TOR
They were down 5-0 until the 7th when things started to turn around. Hoffman pitched the bottom of the 7th somewhat poorly with an error, walk, and HBP but didn't allow a run. He ended up picking up a win. They went up 8-5 and brought on Mason Fluharty who loaded the bases without getting an out. Rogers had pitched yesterday so he wasn't available. They brought on Varland to try and get 6 outs. In the 8th he let one of Fluharty's runs in but got out of that inning and in the 9th he made an error that allowed a guy to reach but nothing else and got the 6 out save. He continues to be one of the best closers and relievers in the game.
CHC
The bullpen collapsed here in the 7th inning on. They turned to Trent Thornton in the 7th with a 5-0 lead and got an out before allowing a three run homer. He struck out one more guy before being pulled for Caleb Thielbar. Thielbar got out of the 7th and let the 1st two he faced on in the 8th before being pulled for presumed closer Jacob Webb. Webb got beat like a drum allowing a couple singles and a three run homer with two punchouts mixed in. 5 runs scored while he was on the mound and two were charged to Thielbar. Ethan Roberts got the last out of the 8th with the team down 8-5 and pitched the 9th. Either nothing has changed here or we are back to square 1. Webb has never closed and shouldn't. Thielbar had some success earlier in the year but is almost 40. If anything these two might have opened up the door for a larger committee. Thornton gave up runs today but Rolison could see a chance I guess. Either way the bullpen is a mess.
SDP
I didn't mention this yesterday but they sent Bradgley Rodriguez down. They are saying they wanted to get him some rest so it doesn't sound injury related. In the game Jason Adam allowed a two run homer in the 7th to put them down 3-1. Morejon pitched the 8th an 9th with the game tied after they rallied in the top of the 8th. He ended up picking up the win. Mason Miller pitched the 10th and while the ghost runner scored they had a three run lead so it didn't matter. It was his 1st appearance since returning from the bereavement list. Miller is the best closer in the game and Adam and Morejon are great for holds.
TEX
Cole Winn was charged with two runs in the 8th and Tyler Alexander was charged with the blown save. Those two were in due to Junis pitching yesterday. An error hurt them but they didn't get the job done. Latz had no trouble in the 9th keeping the game tied and they went to Joe Ross in the 10th and he allowed a three run homer. They need another good arm if they want to seriously compete for or in the postseason.
MIL
Somewhat odd usage here but the Braves have a lot of LHB in the lineup. Uribe pitched in the 7th getting two outs and picking up a hold. They went to Megill in the 8th and he faced the bottom of the lineup which had all the RHBs. He had no issues picking up a hold as well. Aaron Ashby had the 9th with a couple LHB scheduled to hit and he got an out, allowed a single, and gave up the game ending homer. Megill is still the closer here and Ashby probably did more to hurt his chances at pitching in the 9th again than help them. Uribe is just a holds guy.
MIA
They had a four run lead for most of the game until the 8th when Gibson was charged with a run that Bender allowed to score. That lead to Fairbanks pitching the 9th and picking up a save. He had no issues and has now looked good for the last couple weeks. He has always been a hot and cold guy so enjoy this while you can. The rest of the bullpen pitched a lot yesterday so I still wouldn't put a lot of stock into who was pitching when. Bender pitched in the 3rd yesterday and the 8th today. Things get thrown out of whack in bullpen games.
WSN
Good night for a couple guys in the bullpen. Mitchell Parker picked up the win pitching in the 3rd, 4th and 5th. He has had a couple rough outings so this was a nice bounce back. Brad Lord who has been very good picked up a hold pitching the 6th, 7th, and 8th. Another strong showing for him and he has become arguably their best reliever. Clayton Beeter made the 9th interesting allowing a walk and a infield single that scored a run and made it 4-3. He also allowed three stolen bases. Eventually he got the last three outs mixing in one more walk and picked up the save. Outings like this keep the guys like Varland and Dicky Love in the mix for the 9th inning as well as the managers reluctance to use one guy as the closer.
COL
Pretty good night for the bullpen as they didn't allow a run and managed to hold a 2-1 lead. Jimmy Herget was the 1st in pitching the 7th and getting an out in the 8th. He picked up a hold. Brennan Bernardino came on and got the final two outs of the 8th before starting the 9th with a couple LHBs and the middle of the order up. He allowed the 1st two to reach and got a strikeout picking up a hold before being pulled for Jaden Hill. Hill hit the 1st batter he faced to load the bases but got a strikeout and a groundout to end the game. The last out was ruled baserunner interference as the runner cut in front of the fielder. Kind of a weird call but they didn't review it. Herget has been a good reliever for the last couple years but they never use him late. He could be a low end holds option. Hill and Senzatela are the two guys most likely to see a save chance. Hill's ERA is over 5 so watchout for him.
LAA
The game was a blowout but both Zeferjahn and Yates pitched. For what it is worth Yates pitched the 9th while Zef got 5 outs in the 7th and 8th. I wouldn't look into this and we now wait another day to see who closes. I think Zef is the favorite if he is available though I wouldn't mind seeing Bachman get another shot. Lets keep Yates in a mop up role.
MIN
Another blowout but that didn't stop them from using some of the main options. I guess when you have 11 guys with a save everyone is a main option. Anthony Banda pitched in the 6th with a 16-2 lead. He allowed a single. Justin Lawrence must not have felt comfortable with that large of a lead as he pitched the 7th and allowed 5 runs. Eric Orze got the last out of the 7th and pitched the 8th allowing a run. They turned to Yoendrys Gomez for the 9th since he hadn't pitched since the 15th. He had no issues pitching a perfect 9th inning. I think Gomez is the closer here.
SEA
Not much for the main guys in the bullpen. They did use Jose Ferrer in the 6th of a 2-1 game. The bases were loaded when he came in and he allowed all three inherited runners to score. Once again Ferrer is an odd case because he isn't a great holds option but if something were to happen to Munoz I think he gets the 1st save chance.
BAL
They needed 4 pitchers to get the final 6 outs and protect the 3-0 lead. It was an adventure to say the least. Garcia gave up a leadoff single but got two outs in the 8th. Wolfram got the final out and both picked up holds. With the top of the lineup coming up they turned to Andrew Kittredge who allowed a leadoff homer, got an out, and walked a batter before being pulled for Yennier Cano. A lot of bad luck for Cano as Betts hit a single which the 3rd baseman muffed before almost throwing him out. They also saw the right fielder drop a line drive that allowed another run to score and make it 3-2. Cano did get the last out and picked up the save. Helsley remains the closer if he is healthy. At the very least they will want to audition him for a potential trade. Garcia remains the best option for holds.
