Bullpen Notes🗒️(8/31)
ATL: With the game tied 3-3 in the 6th, two on, and one out they went with Dylan Lee. He allowed a double that plated both inherited runners, got an out, and allowed a single that put them down 6-3. Ray Kerr would come in, get the final out, and pitch the next three innings. Lee's struggles continue as he allows another run. Like I said yesterday despite his season success I am avoiding him right now. Fuentes and Dodd are the late inning guys to roster.
SFG: Jason Foley and Reiver Sanmartin got through the 6th, 7th, and 8th without allowing any runs and picked up holds. With a 7-3 lead in the 9th they went with Dylan Smith who put the first two on but got a double play and didn't allow any runs. Smith is still the closer but I do think Carson Seymour is the next in line and the 8th inning man. They aren't very good so he might not see many holds but if you are looking to handcuff Smith he is next in line.
NYM: Nate Lavender got the final two outs of the 6th to keep the score at 1-0 and pick up a hold. Dedniel Nunez pitched a perfect 7th with the score 3-0 and picked up a hold. Daniel Duarte had the 8th but struggled allowing a couple runs and getting two outs. Chris Devenski who they recently signed got the final out of the 8th to keep the score at 3-2 and both guys picked up holds. Kodai Senga allowed a lead off walk in the 9th but got the save. Senga remains the closer and Duarte is still the best option for holds despite tonight's rough outing.
MIA: Jack Ralston came on in the 5th and allowed a two run dong to the first the batter he faced. He would return for the 6th and allow a single. Tyler Zuber would get out of the inning and pick up a hold with the score 3-2. He would also return for the 7th and allow a single before getting an out. Josh Ekness came on and didn't have it tonight. The first batter he faced hit a two run dong and he would allow two more runs in the inning before getting pulled for Cade Gibson who would finish off the game. Ekness was charged with a blown save and a loss. This pretty much resets the bullpen here. I still like Ekness but I have to figure Faucher or Petersen gets the next chance. Really with the usage of all of these guys it doesn't seem like we will see a single closer emerge until Fairbanks returns which would be a repeat of earlier this year and last season.
WSN: Will Dion started the game and pitched the first three innings without allowing a run. Luis Perales got mauled again in the 4th allowing three runs. Matt Waldron coved the next three innings and got into the 8th while picking up a win. Erik Tolman came in with the bases loaded in the 8th and a 6-3 lead. He stuck a guy out and got a double play to get out of the mess. He would return for the 9th and pick up the save. We continue to play closer roulette in thes bullpen and with Beeter resting today it was Tolman's turn. I don't trust anyone here but if I had to pick one guy it would be Beeter.
SEA: Seranthony Domínguez pitched the 6th and Gabe Speier got three outs in the 7th and one in the 8th. Those two pitched pretty well and both of them picked up holds while protecting a 7-5 and 8-5 lead. Eduard Bazardo came in after Speier in the 8th and got one out while allowing three guys to reach and two scored. He would pick up a hold after Andrés Muñoz got the final out of the inning. Muñoz returned for the 9th and allowed a lead off triple which was misplayed by the centerfielder. After allowing a sac fly he was charged with a blown save. Cooper Criswell a former BOS pitcher had the 10th and after a sac bunt allowed the game ending run to score. This was a painful loss for the beleaguered bullpen which had a three run lead in the 8th. Speier is probably the best option for holds and Bazardo is struggling a lot lately. Munoz remains a very good closer who isn't seeing many chances.
BOS: Tyron Guerrero came on in the 6th and allowed four runs one of which was the starters. He was charged with a blown save. Erik Miller gave up a lead off dong in the 7th to make it a 8-5 deficit. Alex Gamboa kept SEA off the board in the 8th and 9th and they would tie the game in the bottom of the 9th. Aroldis Chapman pitched the 10th and didn't allow the ghost runner to score so he picked up the win. Whitlock is back and he takes back over the 8th which drops Guerrero and Miller's value for holds.
MIL: The game was a blowout so the only news here today is that they activated Abner Uribe. He will return to the 8th and his high leverage role. Ashby could still be worth a roster spot until we see how they plan on using Romero.
TEX: Another game that wasn't close but we saw a couple bullpen moves. Ben Peoples and Robby Ahlstrom returned to the big squad and Peyton Gray and Cole Winn went to the IL. This doesn't appear to help the bullpen as the guys hitting the IL are better than the guys they called up.
HOU: Enyel De Los Santos got the final out of the 5th with the team up 3-2. He would return and get two outs in the 6th while walking the bases loaded. He picked up the win. Bennett Sousa was back in an important spot and got the final out of the 6th. He returned for the 7th and allowed a solo dong but that made the score 6-3. He picked up the hold. Steven Okert got the top of the order out in the 8th and picked up a hold. With Hader having pitched four times last week and last night they went with Bryan Abreu in the 9th and he allowed a two out walk but converted the save. Hader is a stud and Okert and Abreu can be tricky at times but both offer strong value for holds.
COL: Mark Manfredi pitched the 6th and returned for the 7th but allowed a couple walks while getting an out. Nick Frasso would come on and walk the bases loaded before allowing an inherited run to score. Manfredi was charged with the loss. They used Brennan Bernardino in the 8th with the team down 2-1 and he allowed a hit. Jordan Romano pitched the 9th without issue even though it was not a save situation. Bernardino is the best option for holds and Romano is the surprise closer. Both guys are risky but they are both locked into the roles.
BAL: Grant Wolfram pitched the 6th and 7th and ended up picking up the win. Alex Hoppe who got a bump up in leverage in the 8th against the middle of the lineup with a one run lead let two of three on. Rico Garcia would get the final two outs protecting the 2-1 lead and both guys picked up holds. Andrew Kittredge had the 9th and got an out, allowed a double, got another out, and gave up a shot to center that was caught on one of the best catches you will see. Should have been a two run dong but instead Kitty picks up the save. I think Kitty is the closer here and Garcia is the 8th inning guy with Cano the next up. Go out and add Kitty if you need saves.
NYY: They got mauled but we did get a look at bullpen Luis Gil. He pitched a couple innings and allowed a run. I wouldn't get too excited about him yet as he looked pretty average. David Bednar got a work inning in with the team down 7-1 in the 8th and allowed three runs. You hate to see it but it certainly doesn't change his role as the closer.
ARI: Jonathan Loáisiga pitched a perfect 7th, Juan Morillo loaded the bases in the 8th but didn't allow a run, and Kevin Ginkel pitched the 9th. All were pitching with the team down 2-1. Morillo and Garcia seem to be in the mix with Justin Martinez for the 9th. I really believe Martinez will get the next save chance but he is still going to be restricted on back to backs which could open the door for other guys.
PHI: Alex McFarlane came on in the 6th with a 2-1 lead, no outs, and two runners on. He was impressive getting three outs and picking up a hold. Orion Kerkering started the 7th and allowed two on but a caught stealing erased one of those runners. Brooks Raley would come on and get the final out of the inning with both guys picking up holds. José Alvarado got a surprise 8th inning and allowed two runners to reach but picked up the hold. No Bowlan tonight but he could just be getting an extra night after pitching back to back the other day. With a 2-1 lead in the 9th Jhoan Duran made things somewhat interesting allowing two runners to reach but he would get a groundout to end the game and pick up the save. Duran is the closer and the battle is for the 8th inning where I like Bowlan. Alex McFarlane has been very good recently.
