Bullpen Notes🗒️(8/22)

NYY: They were down all game but Fernando Cruz got into the action. He got the final out of the 8th and pitched the 9th. They're are better options on the team for holds so you can move on from him until he gets it together.

TOR: Spencer Miles came on in the 7th with a 3-1 lead, two on and two out. He hit the first batter he faced and got the next guy out. Tyler Rogers had the 8th with a 4-1 lead and he allowed a two run homer which was the first he has allowed all season in 58+ innings. Miles and Rogers would pick up holds. With the score 4-3 in the 9th Louis Varland allowed a lead off double but picked up the save. These are the guys to roster in this bullpen and they used them in the expected order.

MIL: Chad Patrick allowed a one out walk in the 7th with a 4-1 lead. DL Hall pitched a perfect 8th and both guys picked up holds. Aaron Ashby had the 9th and the first two reached before he got an out and a double play to pick up the save. Megill was off after pitching back to back but Ashby is clearly next in line for saves and the best option for holds in the bullpen with Uribe on the IL. Patrick and Senzatela also have some low end hold value.

MIA: Michael Petersen pitched a perfect 6th with a 4-2 lead and picked up a hold. Josh Ekness got the next four batters out without and issue and Tyler Zuber got the final two outs of the 8th. Both guys picked up holds. With the score still 4-2 in the 9th they went with Calvin Faucher and he was perfect converting his second save of the season. It appears that Fairbanks was unavailable after blowing last nights save. I doubt that Fairbanks has lost the job so I still consider him the closer. Faucher, and Petersen are the best options for holds and Ekness is the sleeper. They didn't have a true closer last year and the bullpen was pretty chaotic so I would expect similar if Fairbanks is hurt or removed.

TBR: Tyler Wells pitched the 6th and 7th with a 2-0 lead and allowed a two out single in the 6th. He was credited with a hold. Kevin Kelly had the 8th and allowed the lead off runner to reach before getting an out an giving up a two run game tying homer. He would get another out before being pulled for Garrett Cleavinger who got out of the inning an pitched a perfect 9th with the game tied at 2-2. Kelly was charged with a blown save. They didn't score in the top of the 10th and Bryan Baker allowed a double to the first batter that scored the BAL ghost runner and ended the game. That is his second 10th inning loss in the last two weeks and it seems to be the only time he allows runs. I like the good outing from Cleavinger and the bullpen remains the same with Baker the closer and Kelly the best option for holds.

BAL: Josh Walker got the final out of the 6th with a couple on and the team down 2-0. He would return for the 7th and get two outs before allowing a double and being pulled for Alex Hoppe. Hoppe would get the next for outs without issue. Andrew Kittredge pitched the 9th with the game tied and allowed a double. They used Rico Garcia in the 10th and he didn't allow the ghost runner to score. He would pick up the win after they scored in the bottom half of the inning. Kitty and Garcia are the two guys to roster and they both should see save chances. Right now it seems like Kitty is the closer but they do love to use Garcia late as well.

TEX: They were down for the bullpen innings and used Cole Winn to get out of the 6th with a one out and a runner on first and second. He would return and pitch a perfect 7th. Robby Ahlstrom allowed a run in the 8th which made it 3-0. Peyton Gray allowed a two out single in the 9th. These guys have all moved down a peg with the Silseth trade and Junis return. None of them should be rostered since they wont pitch in high leverage spots on most nights.

LAA: Michael Fulmer pitched the 8th with a 3-0 lead and allowed a two out walk. He picked up a hold. Ryan Watson pitched a perfect 9th against the meat of the order and picked up the save. Watson was a DFA from BOS just after the deadline. Joyce had pitched last night so he wasn't available. Like I have been saying they aren't going to push him. Watson has some value late with Natera on the IL and him and Fermin are the high leverage guys who could get holds.

HOU: With the score 1-1 in the 6th, two out, and two on AJ Blubaugh got the final out. He would return and pitch the 7th with the game still tied. Bennett Sousa had the 8th with a 3-1 lead and like he has all season in big spots struggled. He faced four batters and the only out he got was on a sac fly. He left with the game tied at 3-3 and Abreu who came on would allow one more of Sousa's runs to make it 4-3. Sousa was charged with three runs, a blown save, and a loss. Abreu would pitch the 9th as well and didn't allow a run. The bullpen is still pretty good though they could use a middle reliever to help them with some innings. Hader is the closer and Okert and Abreu are the guys to roster for holds.

ATH: With a 1-1 score in the 7th Luis Medina came in and allowed a lead off homer and one other run before getting out of the inning. They rallied and took 4-3 lead turning to Hogan Harris in the 8th against the meat of the lineup. He would pitch a perfect inning and pick up a hold. Surprisingly after only throwing 11 pitches the pulled Harris for Elvis Alvarado in the 9th. Alvarado was perfect striking out a pair and picking up the save. Even if we get tempted we know who Alvarado is and how it will end. Harris is the closer and the only reliever I would roster on this team.

NYM: With a 7-4 in the 5th, two outs, and the bases loaded they went with Jonathan Pintaro who got the final out of the inning. He would return for the 6th and got an out while allowing a run and a couple guys to reach. Austin Warren got the final two outs and pitched the 7th allowing a two out single. He would pick up the win. With an 8-5 lead they used Dedniel Nunez in the 8th and he picked up a hold. They had a 10-5 lead in the 9th and Kodai Senga pitched. He allowed the first two on but battled back and got out of the inning without allowing any runs. Senga is the closer and Duarte is the best option for holds.

SFG: Carson Seymour got the final out of the 6th with a 2-0 lead and one on. He returned for the 7th allowing a one out single but nothing else. In the 8th he allowed the first two on and was pulled for Dylan Smith. Smith loaded the bases but got the next three outs and both guys picked up holds. Smith would return for one batter in the 9th who he walked and who would end up scoring. Sam Hentges was brought on and he was awful. He would let two runs of his own in and they would lose the game. Hentges was charged with a blown save and a loss. Smith is the closer here though hopefully they can get the ball to him in the 9th so we don't see situations where he is needed prior.

BOS: Greg Weissert got the final out of the 6th and two outs in the 7th. He would allow a single and Jovani Moran got the final out of the inning. Moran returned for the 8th and let two on while getting two outs and being pulled for Wyatt Olds who got the final out. Olds would battle his way though the 9th loading the bases but not allowing any runs. All of these guys were pitching with the team down and Olds would end up picking up the win when they rallied in the bottom of the 9th.

KCR: Alex Lange came on and pitched a perfect 8th with a 3-1 lead. In another surprise they went with Craig Kimbrel in the 9th. He was facing the middle of the order and allowed a two out walk but stuck out the next batter to end the inning. They had used the main guys last night with Cruz getting four outs and Pearson pitching his second night in a row so they weren't available. Kimbrel didn't look that bad but don't expect him to suddenly take over. This was a spot save and Cruz and Pearson remain the guys to roster with Cruz being my choice for the 9th.

CHC: Trent Thornton pitched the 7th with a 4-2 lead and allowed a double. He would return and get one out in the 8th as well. Ryan Rolison got the final two outs of the 8th and both guys picked up holds. Jacob Webb got the first two outs of the 9th and then the wheels fell off. He allowed a double, a single that scored a run to make it 4-3, and a two run homer that ended the game. He hadn't allowed a run since June and just like that the day after Palencia gets back he shits the bed. It certainly opens things up in the 9th and I do think Palencia is going to pitch at least one more time in a lower leverage spot. Him and Webb are the guys to roster. It would not shock me at all if Palencia was the closer by next weekend.

SEA: They were down 3-2 with a couple outs in the 6th and went with Carlos Vargas. He allowed back to back doubles that scored a run. He would return for the 7th as well. It was his first appearance of the year after being pretty good last year. With the score still 4-2 Seranthony Domínguez pitched the 8th and Michael Rucker pitched the 9th. Rucker would end up picking up the win after they rallied in the bottom of the 9th. They didn't use the top line guys and none of the guys who pitched today are worth rostering.

PIT: Yohan Ramirez pitched in the 5th with a 3-2 lead. He hit a guy, allowed a double, got an out, and allowed a double that put them down 4-3. He would get out of the inning but ended up taking the loss. Camilo Doval pitched the 6th, Kirby Yates pitched the 7th, and Antwone Kelly pitched the 8th. None of them ran into any real trouble or allowed any runs. Monty is the closer and Weaver is the 8th inning man with Soto the lesser option for holds.

LAD: With a 4-3 lead in the 8th they went with Evan Phillips. He allowed a double and got two outs before being pulled for Jack Dreyer who got the final out. Both guys would pick up holds. Tanner Scott pitched a perfect 9th picking up the save. He is locked in as the closer and anyone in the rest of the bullpen seems to pitch in the 8th on any given night. I do think Alex Vesia and Edgardo Henriquez will be the best options for holds once things settle down.

CLE: They had a 4-2 lead going into the 7th and turned to Erik Sabrowski. He pitched a perfect inning and was followed by Hunter Gaddis in the 8th who allowed a lead off single but nothing else. Both guys would pick up holds. Cade Smith had the 9th and allowed a lead off dong that cut the lead to 4-3 but got the next three and picked up the save. These are the three guys to roster in the bullpen and they should be added in saves and holds leagues.

CIN: They had a 10-4 lead but used Luis Mey in the 7th and he allowed two on but none scored. In the 8th Tony Santillan made his first appearance since coming back from the IL. He would walk a couple and give up a run. It was a nice spot to get him some work. Tejay Antone pitched the 9th and allowed a double. Pagan is the closer and hopefully Santillan can return to the 8th where he once thrived.

MIN: With a 5-1 lead in the 6th, two on, and one out they went to A.J. Minter. He would allow one inherited runner to score before getting out of the inning and picking up a hold. Andrew Morris pitched the 7th and it did not go well. He allowed four runs (1 unearned) and the 5-2 lead turned into a 6-5 deficit. He would end up with a loss and a blown save. Tommy Nance pitched the 8th and allowed a run to make it 7-5. Morris has been struggling so he could be moving down in leverage. That would be good news for Hoffman and Minter who would likely see holds in his place. Gomez remains the closer.

SDP: They got down big early and used Kyle Hart and Griffin Canning. Those two pitched 4.1 innings and Hart allowed a run and Canning picked up a win while getting them to the 8th. They took a 6-5 lead and turned to Adrian Morejon who would pitch a perfect 8th inning and pick up a hold. With the score 7-5 in the 9th Mason Miller came on and was perfect to pick up the save. These two pitch the 8th and 9th and are great options for saves and holds.
