Bullpen Notes🗒️(8/13)
DET: With a 2-0 lead in the 7th and one out they brought in Tyler Holton. He got the next two outs in the 7th and pitched the 8th allowing a lead off single. He picked up a hold. Kenley Jansen pitched the 9th with a 3-0 lead and was perfect picking up a save. Holton could be worth looking at if you need holds as he might be the better option over Finnegan. Jansen is the closer and a risky option at that.
CHW: They were down big for most of the game but did use Jordan Hicks in the 9th with the score 9-7. He was perfect. It was more of a work inning since he hadn't pitched Sunday. The bullpen should be fully rested going into the weekend so we will see if how they use Grant Taylor. It's a big series with DET. (Sean Newcomb is opening tmr)
CIN: Brock Burke got two outs in the 5th with the team up 8-4 and he allowed an inherited runner to score. Tejay Antone struck out the side in the 6th and picked up the win. Luis Mey pitched the 7th with a 9-5 lead. Sam Moll started the 8th and gave up three singles, a walk, two runs, and got two outs. Pierce Johnson got the last out of the inning and was credited with a hold. Julian Garcia pitched the 9th with a 9-7 lead and walked the lead off batter who came around to score but picked up the save. Lots going on here today as they pretty much flipped the bullpen with Burke and Antone pitching early. After the game they announced Emilio Pagán was dealing with some hand soreness. As of now it seems minor but they are checking him out tomorrow. They struggled mightily earlier in the year without Pagan and I would expect both Burke and Antone to be in the mix if he has to go on the IL.
NYY: They were down 1-0 and used Ryan Yarbrough, Yerry De los Santos, and Fernando Cruz to get through the final four innings. None of them allowed a run and I note it because Cruz does need to put together some good outings since has struggled. Bednar and Headrick are the guys to roster here.
SEA: They finally won a game and the bullpen got the job done over the last three innings. Eduard Bazardo had the 7th with a 1-0 lead and he got two outs but walked a couple batters. He would get a strikeout to end the inning and pick up a hold. Jose A. Ferrer pitched a perfect 8th the same 1-0 lead and picked up a hold. Andrés Muñoz had the 9th and he was perfect picking up a save. Muñoz continues to look great and if they can start winning he could rack up the saves. I still like Bazardo for holds.
TOR: Spencer Miles pitched the 6th and Braydon Fisher pitched the 7th with the team down 1-0. The bullpen finally broke down in the 8th with Chase Lee giving up a grand slam to make it a 5-0 deficit. Lazaro Estrada gave up two more in the 9th to make it 7-0. I like Miles as a deep sleeper but the rest of the guys aren't worth rostering. Varland and Rogers are the two guys you want here.
BOS: Whitlock hit the IL which was bigger news than anything that happened in the game. That is a huge loss for the bullpen as he was the 8th inning man. The bullpen is deep and I would expect Justin Slaten, Erik Miller, and Tyron Guerrero to all see a step up in leverage and it will probably be more of a combo in the 8th to start. Slaten has the most experience and I would target him even though he has struggled most of the year.
WSN: Clayton Beeter pitched the 9th with the team up 7-0. He was perfect. He is as close as they are going to get to a closer and is a risky man to roster since they use him in the biggest situations.
PHI: With an off day tomorrow they used the bullpen in the order I would have expected prior to all the struggles. Brooks Raley pitched the 6th, Jonathan Bowlan pitched the 7th, Orion Kerkering pitched the 8th, and Jhoan Duran pitched the 9th. Everyone but Kerkering allowed a baserunner. They had a 7-1 lead for all of the innings besides Raley's which was 5-1. Until Kerkering pitches well in a high leverage situation I would avoid him and use Bowlan for holds instead. Duran is the closer and one of the best in the game.
LAD: Jack Dreyer pitched the 7th with a 4-2 lead and allowed a lead off single but nothing else picking up a hold. Edgardo Henriquez started the 8th and got a couple outs with a walk in between. Tanner Scott came on to get the final out of the inning and both guys picked up holds. With the same 4-2 lead in the 9th they went with Edwin Díaz. He got an out but then allowed three straight singles and two runs that tied the game. He would get one more out before being pulled for Alex Vesia who allowed a single to the LHB he was brought in to face that put them down 5-4. We are now in the danger zone with Diaz and it seems like he might need some work outside of the 9th. In this series with MIL I don't think they will let him get another chance at a save. That should mean Scott moves back into the closers role and even if he doesn't he still has holds value.
MIL: Antonio Senzatela came on in the 6th with a 2-1 lead, two on, and one out. He struck out the first batter before allowing a three run dong to the next. He was charged with a blown save. It is time to pump the breaks on him as he can't pitch a clean inning. DL Hall pitched a prefect 7th and 8th with the team down but ended up picking up a win. Trevor Megill pitched the 9th and was perfect picking up the save. Uribe and Megill are the guys to roster here and Ashby has some value as well.
