Bullpen Notes🗒️(8/12)
MIN: With a 7-4 lead in the 6th they went with Andrew Morris. It was against the bottom of the order so this was a bit odd. He was perfect in the inning and picked up the hold. Jeff Hoffman pitched the 7th and got two outs before walking a couple guys and throwing a wild pitch. He did get out of it and picked up a hold. A.J. Minter pitched a perfect 8th and picked up a hold. With the same 7-4 lead in the 9th Yoendrys Gomez allowed a lead off dong and walked a batter before getting a double play and groundout to pick up the save. It's rare for Gomez to have a clean inning but if he keeps converting he will remain the closer. Morris should still the best guy for holds but keep track of his usage next outing since today's 6th inning appearance was odd.
PHI: They were down 5-1 in the 6th when they brought in Brooks Raley. He pitched a perfect inning and they went with José Alvarado in the 7th. He faced five batters and walked three of them. A single plated a run and he was pulled for Chase Shugart who allowed one inherited runner to score but finished the game. I would think Raley would pitch in bigger spots but he hadn't pitched in a couple games. Duran and Bowlan are the two guys to roster with the rest of the bullpen struggles.
ARI: They were down most of the game but I just wanted to note that Brandyn Garcia pitched the 9th against the top of the order. He hadn't pitched in three days so this was more of a work inning. Strong chance Justin Martinez is activated early next week. For now Garcia is the closer but if JMart is pitching like he has in the minors it will be tough to keep him out of the 9th.
COL: Parker Mushinski started the 6th with a 6-2 lead and loaded the bases while getting two outs. Juan Mejia got the final out and started the 7th by walking two guys. He was pulled for Jimmy Herget who walked two of his own one of which scored a Mejia run. He did get a double play to end the inning and both guys picked up holds. With the lead now 6-3 they went with Brennan Bernardino for the 8th. He allowed a one out solo homer and a couple more singles but got out of the inning picking up the hold. Jordan Romano pitched the 9th with a 6-4 lead and allowed a walk but picked up the save. He continues to get the job done and certainly be considered if you need saves. Like I said last night Bernardino has moved into the 8th and while risky he is the best option for holds.
SFG: Sam Hentges started the 7th with a 1-0 lead and faced three batters. One single, one out, and one man reached by error. Keaton Winn came in and allowed an inherited runner to score on a sac fly. That tied it and Winn came back for the 8th where he allowed a triple and another sac fly to put them up 2-1. They gave Hentges a hold and Winn was charged with a blown save and picked up a loss. Reiver Sanmartin pitched the 9th with the team down. I think Smith gets the next save chance here and is still the closer but Brubaker could be in the mix.
HOU: Bullpen game and they used King who was charged with a run and De Los Santos in the first. Imai and Blubaugh got into the 6th with the team down 1-0. Steven Okert got the final out of the 6th and pitched a perfect 7th. He was pitching against the top of the order and picked up the win. Bryan Abreu pitched the 8th with a 2-1 lead and was perfect picking up a hold. Like normal they turned to Josh Hader in the 9th and he was perfect picking up save number 17. Okert, Abreu, and Hader are the guys to roster and they are all pitching very well.
MIL: The starter got into the 8th with a 2-1 lead but walked a guy and was pulled for Chad Patrick. Patrick got a double play but walked the next two and was pulled for Aaron Ashby. Ashby allowed the first guy he faced to single an tie the game with the run being charged to Patrick. Ashby returned for the 9th getting an out and allowing a double. Patrick picked up a hold and Ashby was charged with the blown save. Megill got the final two outs of the 9th with the score 2-2 and pitched a perfect 10th. They took a 3-2 lead and went with Antonio Senzatela in the 11th. He hit a batter and allowed a sac fly that scored the ghost runner and a single that scored the game ending run. He picked up a loss. Megill and Uribe are the two guys to roster and the other three mentioned are less dependable options late in the game.
SDP: They were down or tied for all of the bullpen innings. Bradgley Rodriguez pitched the 5th and 6th, Jeremiah Estrada pitched the 7th, and Kyle Hart pitched the 8th. With the game tied in the 9th they went with Mason Miller. Miller actually had the most trouble in the group. Adrian Morejon pitched the 10th and kept the ghost runner from scoring but in the 11th he allowed the ghost runner to score on a lead off double. He would get the win when they rallied in the bottom of the inning. Miller, Morejon, and Estrada are the guys to roster.
CLE: Colin Holderman got though the 6th allowing a one out walk and got an out in the 7th with a 6-3 lead. He picked up a hold. Erik Sabrowski got the final two outs of the 7th after hitting a batter and picked up a hold. Hunter Gaddis started the 8th and let two guys on while getting two outs. They brought in Cade Smith and he allowed a runner to score on a wild pitch before getting the final out. Gaddis was charged with run and picked up a hold. Smith returned for the 9th with a 6-4 lead and allowed a couple singles but picked up the save. He threw almost 40 pitches. Smith and Gaddis are the guys to roster and Holderman has been good as well. Sabrowski has a nice run of good outings building so maybe he has righted the ship.
WSN: Pretty ugly game for the bullpen and it was a 6th inning that was the main culprit. The game was tied and Jake Bird got the first out after pitching the 5th. Tom Cosgrove got one out while facing four batters. An error was also made which resulted in two of his runs being unearned. Yovanny Cruz's honeymoon ended as he allowed a single that scored two and a two run homer. They ended up giving up 5 runs in the inning and turning the 4-4 tie into a 9-4 deficit. Clayton Beeter is still the best option for saves here and the rest of the bullpen is young and going to struggle at times.
SEA: The game was tied at 5-5 in the 7th and they went with Gabe Speier. After getting a lead off out he allowed five of the next six to reach and three runs scored. He took the loss and was pulled after walking a batter in and putting them down 8-5. Seranthony Domínguez got the final out and Nick Davila pitched the 8th allowing a couple runs. The team is ice cold and the bullpen has been doing them no favors. Munoz is a stud and Bazardo is the best option for holds.
NYY: Fernando Cruz pitched in the 5th with the team down 4-3 and allowed an inherited runner to score while getting one out. Tim Hill got out of the inning with a double play. Hill walked a guy and got an out in the 6th with the game tied before Paul Blackburn took over. He got out of the 6th and pitched the 7th picking up the win. Brent Headrick pitched a perfect 8th picking up a hold. They took a 10-5 lead and used Yerry De los Santos in the 9th. Bednar is the closer and Headrick is the best option for holds. Cruz has fallen out of favor here for holds and can probably be dropped in most leagues. Blackburn is the better option.
BOS: With the score 1-1 in the 6th Justin Slaten allowed a one out walk but got through the inning. Erik Miller pitched the 7th and allowed another one out single but nothing else. Tyron Guerrero started the 8th and faced five batters without getting an out. They dropped a foul popup which hurt him but this was an ugly appearance. Alex Gamboa got out of the inning but allowed a couple inherited runners to score. Guerrero was charged with five runs (1 unearned) and he took the loss. Garrett Whitlock has been dealing with an elbow issue so that is why he wasn't used. This is bad news for the bullpen and Guerrero hurt his stock a bit with that outing. If Whitlock hits the IL Slaten or Miller are probably the best option for holds though Slaten has struggled. Chapman is the closer.
TOR: Mason Fluharty pitched the 7th with the score 1-1 and had no issue. Tyler Rogers pitched the 8th with the same score and allowed a lead off single. He would end up picking up the win. Matt Waldron started the 9th with a 6-1 lead but he struggled and was pulled for Varland after allowing four of five to reach. Varland got the final two outs and picked up the save while Waldron was charged with three runs. Varland and Rogers are the guys to roster here.
ATL: They were up 3-1 in the 7th and turned to Dylan Dodd who allowed a solo homer but picked up the hold. Dylan Lee pitched the 8th with a 6-2 lead and Raisel Iglesias pitched the 9th and allowed a run that made it a 6-3 game. Lee is the best option for holds but Dodd and Fuentes have some value as well. Iggy is the closer.
CHW: They had a 3-0 lead in the 8th and went with Hagen Smith. He walked the lead off batter but picked up the hold. They took a 5-0 lead into the 9th and went with Huascar Brazoban who allowed a one out single. Not sure if Braz would have gotten the chance if the score had stayed 3-0. Smith could have gone another inning. Taylor, Newcomb, and Hudson were all unavailable and other than Hudson the other two are better options for saves.
KCR: It was another Lynch start so the bullpen got some work. Craig Kimbrel pitched a scoreless 8th. He is still in the game and despite how bad he is now he could be one of the better options in this bullpen. What a sad day.
LAD: The starter got an out in the 7th and they turned to Landon Knack. They had a 4-2 lead at the time. He allowed two on in the 7th, one in the 8th on an error, and was perfect in the 9th. With the Royals unable to threaten it wasn't shocking to see them leave him in. Diaz had pitched in three of four so getting an extra night off makes sense. It was the most Dodger thing possible to steal some innings and rest the bullpen. Diaz and Scott are the guy to roster here.
TEX: With a 2-1 lead in the 6th they went with Robby Ahlstrom. He gave up two hits, a run, hit a batter and got an out. Peyton Gray came on and he got out of the inning but let two more Ahlstrom runs score. Ahlstrom was charged with a blown save and picked up the loss. Peoples and Winn finished off the game. High leverage spot for Ahlstrom and he failed. That is always the concern with these inexperienced guys. On the broadcast they said Junis has been throwing and could be back in the next week if he skips a rehab appearance. The bullpen could really use that since Latz is the only guy I would roster.
LAA: Couple of the main guys were resting tonight. Blake Weiman pitched a perfect 7th in a 4-2 game. He returned for the 8th with a 5-2 lead but allowed a couple hits and got an out. Newly acquired Ryan Watson got the final two outs to hold the lead and both guys picked up holds. Ben Joyce had the 9th and he looked great. One strikeout in a perfect inning. They have two really good guys who are right and left handed pitchers in Joyce and Natera. I think both keep picking up saves since both have been great. We know they will rest Joyce since he has been hurt so I really think both guys are worth rostering the ROS. I think Natera gets more saves but it might be like four to three.
