Bullpen Notes🗒️(7/22)

NYY: Game one saw Brent Headrick and David Bednar pitch the 8th and 9th with it tied 3-3. Bednar let a couple guys on but got out of it. Fernando Cruz started the 10th and just like the other night he struggled. A lead off walk and a couple singles put them down 5-3. After another walk he was pulled for Kervin Castro. Cruz ended up with a loss. In game two Angel Chivilli pitched the 6th and let a guy on in the 7th. Paul Blackburn had the 7th and 8th and pitched pretty well. He would end up getting the win. Will Warren the who normally starts pitched in the 9th but let two on and got pulled for Tim Hill who faced the LHB and ended the game. Bednar is still the closer here and Cruz is the best holds option. Headrick and Chivilli have been pitching very well in the middle innings.

PIT: They went with Carmen Mlodzinski for multiple innings in game one and he allowed a game tying three run homer in the 7th. They pulled him with a couple outs in the 8th and he was charged with a blown save. This is the life of a bulk guy. Mason Montgomery got out of the 8th and walked a guy in the 9th but ended up picking up a win. They went with Gregory Soto in the 10th for the save chance and he pitched a perfect inning. Game two saw Brandon Eisert give up two runs in the 7th with the score 0-0 and he took the loss. They did use Yohan Ramirez in the 8th and he didn't allow a run. Soto and Monty continue to compete for saves and we should see some new faces in the bullpen over the next week or so who could change that.

BOS: Game one saw the normal studs pitch the normal innings. Justin Slaten got an out in the 6th and pitched the 7th allowing a lead off single. Garrett Whitlock pitched a perfect 8th and both guys picked up holds. Aroldis Chapman had the 9th and allowed a hit and a walk but got a double play to keep any runs off the board picking up the save. In game two the went down early and didn't use any of the main guys. The win streak is over at 15 but Chapman and Whitlock remain two of the best options for saves and holds in the game.

BAL: Albert Suarez handled some mop up innings in the game one. They had a 5-1 lead in game two for the bullpen innings and used the guys you would expect in a closer game. Cano pitched the 7th. Kittredge pitched the 8th. and Wells had the 9th. Wells remains the best option for saves but they have been willing to use him against the big hitters prior to the 9th.

MIL: Aaron Ashby pitched the 6th and 7th with a 4-2 lead. He allowed just a walk and picked up a hold. Abner Uribe pitched the 8th and he allowed a couple singles but ended up getting out of it and picking up the hold. In the 9th Trevor Megill allowed a lead off walk which came around to score on a two out single but picked up the save. He has been terrific since losing the job briefly earlier in the season. Uribe is one of the better options for holds.

SFG: They had a 3-0 lead going into the 7th and in similar situation as yesterday they blew it. The starter gave up a 2 run dong that made it 3-2. Sam Hentges came in and allowed a couple singles while getting an out. Keaton Winn win tried to get them out of the inning but allowed two singles and a walk. Three runs ended up scoring two of which were charged to Hentges. Winn ended up with the blown save and Hentges got a hold but took a loss. Erik Miller pitched the 8th with the team still down two runs.

KCR: Daniel Lynch was the first man in for the 8th with a 5-3 lead. He was facing three LHBs and the 9, 1, 2 hitters in the lineup. He had a pretty easy inning picking up a hold. With Lange resting they turned to my sleeper closer Steven Cruz. While facing the heart of the lineup he allowed a solo dong but managed to get out of the inning and pick up the save. I still think Lange is the closer here and but we might be able to rule Lynch out to a degree. It is possible that Cruz has become the handcuff. The bullpen could be remade at the deadline so keep an eye here because Cruz should stay.

COL: With the score 1-0 in they 7th they turned to Jimmy Herget. He allowed a couple walks, a run scoring single, and a two run homer. He was charged with four runs though one was unearned. He has really struggled lately and it is possible that he might be hurt. Zach Agnos finished off the game and allowed a few more runs to make it a blowout. Romano is the closer here and while I wouldn't roster him he is the only guy worth considering for saves.

SEA: Eduard Bazardo had a rough inning in the 7th with a 3-2 lead. He allowed a walk and a single along with getting a couple outs and then gave up a three run homer. He was charged with a blown save and a loss. Cole Wilcox finished off the last two innings of the game. They really could use another reliever or two and with Brash not close to being back.

CIN: Brock Burke was the first in with two outs in the bottom of the 7th with one on. He got a fly out and pitched the 8th were he allowed a one out double. He picked up a hold which was his second in as many days. Emilio Pagán was on for the 9th and he was perfect picking up another save. If they can start winning Pagán will have some value as he is the closer here. He could also be on the move since even if they start winning I don't think they will get back into the race.

LAA: They were down 1-0 for all of the bullpen innings. Samy Natera Jr. pitched the 7th allowing just a single. Kirby Yates pitched the 9th allowing a two out walk but no runs. It has been a couple days since Bachman pitched while all of the other high leverage guys have thrown. Ryan Zeferjahn is the best option for saves but they still might allow Yates to get the occasional chance.

STL: Luis Gastelum pitched the 7th and allowed a single but got a double play to get out of the inning and pick up a hold. He has been pitching in big spots since his call up and while he only throws about 95 and wasn't a big name prospect they seem to trust him. George Soriano pitched a perfect 8th and picked up a hold. Riley O'Brien had the 9th and allowed a couple walks but also struck out three while picking up the save. His control has been a little shaky lately but he is still leading the NL in saves. He is a great guy to roster and a name to watch at the deadline. Soriano would move into the 9th if he is on the move.

CLE: They got crushed but Erik Sabrowski got an out in the 5th and pitched a perfect 6th. He was really the only guy of importance that pitched and hopefully he gets it back together.

MIN: Andrew Morris and Yoendrys Gomez pitched the 8th and 9th. They each gave up a run and they were each pitching with a big lead. They remain the 8th and 9th inning men in that bullpen.

TOR: With the game tied in the 6th Jeff Hoffman got burned by an error and allowed three unearned runs. Typical Hoffman outing with some bad breaks and control issues but obviously the error hurt. Mason Fluharty allowed one of Hoffman's runs to score trying to get the last out. Tyler Rogers, Brendon Little, and Louis Varland closed out the game in that order but they still lost. It appears like they are going to be a seller at the deadline but Varland should remain as the closer.

TBR: Cam Booser got moved into a higher leverage spot pitching in the 7th with a 4-1 lead. He allowed a homer and got two outs and a hold. He is still more of a low leverage left handed pitcher. Kevin Kelly got out of the 7th and pitched a perfect 8th picking up a hold. Bryan Baker had the 9th and was perfect against the middle of the order. He is the closer and one of the best in the league. They need some help getting him the ball so we will see what they do at the deadline.

SDP: With a 1-1 score they went with Morejon in the 7th. He allowed a couple singles but got a though the inning and kept the game tied. Wandy Peralta was put into a bigger spot than normal and reminded us why he doesn't belong in those situations. He let four on all of which scored and got one out in this audition. Randy Vasquez didn't help him out allowing a couple of his runs to score and a couple of his own. They should be selling and well see who is left but for now they still have Miller as the closer.

ATL: Dylan Dodd pitched the 5th and didn't allow a run. Didier Fuentes pitched the 6th and 7th and was charged with a blown save in the 7th when he allowed a solo homer that tied the game 1-1. Dylan Lee pitched a perfect 8th and picked up the win after they took the lead in the bottom half of the inning. With a 7-1 lead to start the 9th they used Victor Mederos and he only got one out while facing 5 batters. He allowed three runners to score and Raisel Iglesias came in and allowed a two run homer that made the game 7-6. Iggy got the last two outs after the homer and he picked up a save. He is still the closer here and Lee is the main holds guy.

DET: They had a nice 4-1 lead for the bullpen innings. Drew Sommers got a double play ball that ended the 6th, Drew Anderson allowed a single in the 7th, and Kyle Finnegan pitched the 8th hitting a batter but getting through the inning. All three guys picked up holds and they added a run in the top of the 9th which turned it into a non save for Kenley. Fortunately Kenley only allowed a walk and got through the 9th inning. He is the closer here but has been picking up saves at a slow rate and doesn't see all the chances.

TEX: They with a bullpen game and used a majority of the bullpen. Junis pitched in the 6th and allowed a run and Latz pitched a perfect 9th. Alexander started if anyone was wondering about him. No reason to be concerned here as these guys were just getting work in.

CWS: Well, well, well, look what we have here. Jordan Hicks pitched in the 6th with a runner reaching on an error. Grant Taylor pitched the 7th and 8th and after he got the 9th batter out faced the top of the order. He pitched well and both him and Hicks picked up holds. They went with Bryan Hudson in the 9th and he was perfect striking out a couple guys while picking up the save. I'm not surprised Taylor faced the best hitters but I am surprised he didn't pitch the 8th and 9th. Since Domínguez was removed they really haven't appeared to want a single closer and just when it appears Taylor will take the reins he has an early appearance. That is why I continue to say he isn't the closer but he is the best option in the bullpen.

HOU: Enyel De Los Santos pitched the 7th with the game tied at 2-2 and allowed just a single. Steven Okert pitched a perfect 8th and picked up the win. With Hader resting due to pitching back to backs they turned to Bryan Abreu for the 9th. He was perfect getting the bottom of the lineup out. Abreu has been much better than the beginning of the season and while his velo still fluctuates somewhat he is pitching later in games. They need a right handed pitcher in the bullpen and maybe he is the answer.
