Bullpen Notes🗒️(7/20)

PHI: They used Orion Kerkering in the 6th to get out of a mess the starter left. It wasn't particularly pretty as he allowed both inherited runners to score but got out of it with a 4-3 lead and picked up a hold. They opened up the game after that inning but Jonathan Bowlan gave up a run in the 7th. José Alvarado got through the 8th with a 9-4 lead. They need him to get it together. Chase Shugart was making a mess in the 9th allowing three runs and they had to bring on Jhoan Duran for the final out. He did not pick up a save. They need another late inning guy to make a real run in the postseason. Maybe it comes from a converted starter or maybe they make a trade.

NYY: Nice game for the bullpen as they were pitching without Bednar. They were up 8-5 in the 5th and needed to use Angel Chivilli to get out of the inning. He did and he also pitched the 6th picking up a win. Brent Headrick pitched a perfect 7th and picked up a hold. Tim Hill had the 8th but allowed 2 hits while facing three batters. His one out was a double play which was big and he picked up a hold. Fernando Cruz got the final out of the 8th and pitched a perfect 9th picking up a save. Nice bounce back for Cruz as he just didn't have the control last night. He is still next in line for the 9th here but that could change if they bring in someone else at the deadline. Bednar is the closer when available.

TBR: They were winning big and used Booser in the 7th and Legumina in the 8th. They turned to Baker in the 9th in a non-save situation and he let the first two on. Thankfully Kirk hit into a double play and he got the final out on a deep fly with no runs allowed. Hate to see closers in non-saves but he hadn't pitched since the break so this was going to happen eventually.

BAL: With a 5-4 lead they turned to Yennier Cano and he got burned by allowing the lead off single. That run would come around to score and he was charged with a blown save. They used Tyler Wells to get out of the inning and he pitched the 8th with the game tied. He struck out the side but allowed a two out homer in the process. He was charged with a loss. This was huge game and it makes sense that they used Wells in that spot. Unfortunately he didn't get the job done with the game tied but I still think he will be the main guy to see saves.

BOS: Tyron Guerrero got out of jam in the 6th getting the final out with two men on. They tied the game up in the bottom of the inning and Guerrero pitched the 7th but allowed a run to score putting them back down 5-4. They would battle back and Garrett Whitlock pitched a perfect 8th picking up a win. Aroldis Chapman pitched the 9th with a one run lead. He allowed a lead off walk and double but somehow prevented a run from scoring. That is 14 in a row. Chapman and Whitlock look like they will be sticking around after the deadline.

ATL: The starter gave up a homer to start the 7th that made the score 3-2. They went to Danny Young who got a couple outs but allowed a single. With the main guys in the bullpen resting Victor Mederos was brought on and after walking a guy he got out of the inning. Young picked up a hold. Mederos was perfect in the 8th and allowed a single in the 9th but picked up the save. He got the final 7 outs of the game. No change in the bullpen here as this was just a situational save and not the start of something new.

MIL: Lance McCullers Jr. pitched the 6th, 7th, and 8th. He ended up allowing a couple runs and picking up a hold. He is going to be a bulk guy for the time being and at some point probably has a better chance of becoming a starter over a high leverage bullpen arm.

SFG: They were down until the bottom of the 9th after they had tied it. JT Brubaker worked in the 5th, 6th, and in the 7th. After letting two on in the 7th Dylan Smith came in and got out of the jam. Jason Foley continued his comeback pitching a perfect 8th. With the game tied 3-3 in the 9th they turned to old friend Caleb Kilian and things ended how they normally do with a run and a loss. He let the lead off guy on and the next batter bunted but they didn't cover second for some reason. After a fly out that advanced the runner they bunted the guy home. Kilian has a lot of bad luck but he clearly shouldn't be pitching in the 9th. Erik Miller and Winn are the two I would expect to see save chances with Miller having the advantage.

KCR: Things went pretty well for 8 of the 9 bullpen outs today. Steven Cruz had a perfect 7th picking up a hold. Daniel Lynch pitched the 8th working around a lead off double to pick up a hold. Alex Lange struck the first two out that he faced before getting behind the next two and allowing a single and homer that tied the game at 3-3. It was very quick and he picked up a win but was charged with a blown save. That is two blown saves in a row so we are now talking more about him being in trouble here. I think it is 50/50 with him and Lynch seeing the next save chance and if either of them is on the move at the deadline Cruz might enter the mix.

CWS: Chris Murphy pitched the 5th and got an out in the 6th picking up a win. Jordan Hicks walked a batter but also got two outs in the 7th picking up a hold. With a 5-2 lead Seranthony Domínguez allowed a solo homer in the 7th but picked up a hold. Sean Newcomb pitched the 8th picking up a hold. They blew the game open scoring 5 runs in the 9th but it appears that Newcomb was going to pitch the 9th if they had not added on. Taylor is the main guy but they will keep babying him to keep him healthy.

HOU: This might be the new look of the bullpen with King sent down. Bennett Sousa was activated so if he is decent he could make his way into bigger spots. Enyel De Los Santos got an out in the 5th and pitched the 6th picking up a win. Steven Okert allowed a couple on in the 7th but got a hold. Bryan Abreu put two on the 8th but got out of it. They were up 8-4 at the time. Josh Hader struggled in the 9th allowing three hits and a run but it was a 4 run game. The bullpen wont win many games pitching like tonight but MIA has been slumping so they got away with it. They need a high leverage right handed pitcher but maybe Abreu is their answer.

CHC: They used a majority of the bullpen and were down for most of the game. Prior to the game they DFA'd Drew Pomeranz and put Phil Maton on the IL. Webb pitched the 9th with the game tied but they couldn't score to get him in the win. Trent Thornton started the 10th but allowed an infield single and left with an injury. With his history he will probably be heading to the IL. Javier Assad came in and allowed both Thornton's runs and one of his own though a couple were unearned. Webb is the closer here and they need high leverage help in this bullpen.

DET: Drew Sommers pitched the 5th and got an out in the 6th. Jacob Waguespack got two outs in the 6th and two in the 7th picking up a hold while allowing a single. Kyle Finnegan got an out in the 7th and allowed a two run homer in the 8th that tied the game at 5-5. He was charged with a blown save. In the 9th Kenley ran into some major trouble but got out of a bases loaded jam with a strikeout. He ended up picking up a win. With an 8-5 lead in the 10th they went to Tyler Holton and he allowed the ghost runner to score but got the save. I hate how they use guys multiple innings and it keeps hurting them. Kenley is the closer though other guys seem to be in the mix and it could be anyone in the bullpen.

COL: As we now know they traded Seth Halvorsen to the LAD. He was on the IL so they aren't losing an active player. Antonio Senzatela gave up a couple runs in the 7th and Victor Vodnik gave up a run in the 9th. Romano is the closer here which is just straight up foul.

WSN: We might have a new man emerging in the bullpen. Riley Cornelio got a couple outs in the 5th and pitched the 6th picking up a win. He walked a couple guys in the 6th. Matt Krook was back in the bigs and pitched the 7th without issue. With a 6-3 lead in the 8th they turned to Tom Cosgrove. He got 6 outs in the 8th and the 9th on 10 pitches while only throwing sweepers that averaged about 75mph. He has been pitching in bigger spots for this awful bullpen but that is pretty much his only pitch. At some point he is going to take a comical beating but for now he might be in the committee for saves here with Beeter and Lawrence. Poulin was put on the IL prior to the game.

CIN: Very ugly 7th inning for Pierce Johnson and Caleb Ferguson. Pierce started the inning and allowed a couple runs while leaving a couple on. Ferguson gave up a grand slam. Pierce was charged with four runs and Ferguson was charged with two. The only guy worth rostering on this team is Pagan and it is risky.

ARI: With the game tied in the 7th they turned to Kevin Ginkel. He let the first two guys on before eventually loading the bases and allowing a two run single and another run to score on a wild pitch. That put them down 5-2 while Jonathan Loáisiga and Brandyn Garcia pitched scoreless 8ths and 9ths. They use Ginkel in big spots and tonight it didn't workout. With the team in the mix they need to be beating teams like the Athletics. Sewald is the closer here and Morillo is next up.

ATH: They finally played a close game late and held a lead. Luis Medina pitched the 6th and 7th picking up a win. He appears to be the later innings holds guy right now. He does not seem like he is in the mix for saves. They went with Jose Suarez in the 8th against the top of the lineup. He was perfect getting his second save of the year. Weird to see him this late and against that part of the lineup since he is also left handed but that is the state of the bullpen. Hogan Harris pitched the 9th and allowed a lead off single and another man to reach but picked up the save. As expected he got the look but I do still think Mark Leiter could be in the mix depending on the match up.

STL: Ryne Stanek walked the lead off guy in the 7th but got the next three out picking up a hold. With the same 2-1 lead George Soriano allowed a lead off single in the 8th before getting the next three out and picking up a hold. Riley O'Brien got the first out of the 9th but that was all. He hit two batters the last one scored the game ending run, walked one batter, and allowed two hits. The hit batters killed him and he didn't really have great control. Weird outing but they cant afford to lose games to bad teams or they will be selling. ROB is still the closer and tonight is how the bullpen should set up with Romero out.
