FTO’S FBB Weekly Edge Report: July 27 – August 2

Welcome back to another edition of the our Fantasy Baseball Weekly Edge Report, where we break down everything you need to know for the upcoming week of season-long fantasy baseball.

We're entering one of the most important stretches of the fantasy season. With the MLB trade deadline approaching, playing time can change overnight as contenders buy, rebuilding clubs promote prospects, and veterans find themselves in new roles. Staying active on the waiver wire and maximizing your schedule advantage becomes increasingly important.

As always, we'll cover the weekly schedule, weather outlook, teams to target, and waiver wire pickups to help you gain an edge.

🗺️ Schedule Breakdown

One of the easiest ways to create an advantage in weekly leagues is by simply getting more plate appearances. This week, we have fifteen teams slated to play seven games. (Finally, we have zero teams scheduled to play 8+ games.)

👉 Remember: These teams give you max volume. That may not sound significant, but it represents roughly a 17% increase in opportunity.

🌦️Weather Notes

Summer weather continues to dominate the fantasy landscape, with warm temperatures expected across much of the country. That generally favors offense, as higher temperatures tend to help the ball carry and can turn routine fly balls into extra-base hits. Managers in weekly leagues should continue leaning into hitters when deciding between closely ranked options.

As always, scattered thunderstorms remain the biggest concern this time of year. Afternoon and evening storms can create delays or postponement risks throughout the Midwest and East Coast, while many West Coast games should enjoy much more stable conditions. Be sure to monitor forecasts later in the week before setting daily lineups, particularly if you're relying on fringe pitchers or streaming options.

🔥Top Stacks to Target

Here are a few teams that are in favorable spots for the upcoming week:

⚾ Red Sox (@ ATH, @ LAD)

We love targeting the Red Sox this week as they open with a four-game series at hitter-friendly Sutter Health Park before traveling to Los Angeles. Boston has been one of the hottest offenses in baseball throughout July, and we expect that momentum to continue. With favorable hitting environments and a red-hot lineup, the Red Sox are one of our favorite stacks of the week.

⚾ Nationals (vs TOR, @ ATL)

We also have our eyes on the Nationals this week as they open with a three-game home series against the Blue Jays before heading to Atlanta for four games. Washington's offense has shown flashes of upside recently, and a full seven-game week gives their everyday hitters plenty of opportunities to produce. If you're looking for a lower-rostered stack with volume on its side, the Nationals are worth considering.

⚾ Athletics (vs BOS, vs DET)

We also like the Athletics this week as they'll spend the entire week at hitter-friendly Sutter Health Park. Seven straight home games in one of baseball's best offensive environments gives this lineup plenty of upside, making the A's an appealing under-the-radar stack for fantasy managers looking to capitalize on favorable hitting conditions.

🎯Waiver Wire Targets

We always want to be aggressive on the waiver wire. Here are a few players/situations that we are keeping a close eye on:

⚾Steven Kwan, 56% owned, has been one of the hottest hitters in baseball over the past few weeks. His elite contact skills, ability to score runs, return to the top of the Gaurdians lineup, and recent surge at the plate make him a strong addition for managers looking for consistent production during the fantasy playoff push.

⚾ Cole Carrigg, 69% owned, is back on our list for another week, despite the Rockies finally playing a series away from Colorado. Carrigg has been playing more often and has the upside to contribute in multiple categories.

⚾ Walbert Urena, 55% owned, has quietly put together a solid stretch of starts. While he may not have ace-level upside, he's pitched well enough recently to deserve a roster spot and can provide reliable innings with the potential for quality starts and wins.

⚾ Zac Thornton, 35% owned, is a name we're monitoring in deeper leagues for now (and not just because he has recently changed it). The upside is intriguing, and if he continues to earn opportunities in the rotation, Thornton has the potential to become a valuable fantasy asset down the stretch. He's worth stashing before the rest of your league catches on.

🧠 Final Thoughts

The calendar may still say July, but every matchup starts carrying a little more weight from here on out. Maximizing games played, staying ahead of trade deadline news, and remaining aggressive on the waiver wire can provide a significant edge over managers who simply set their lineups and wait.

This week, prioritize players on seven-game schedules, monitor weather as lineups lock throughout the week, and don't be afraid to move quickly when new opportunities arise after the trade deadline. A few extra at-bats or a timely waiver claim may not seem like much now, but they can make all the difference when playoff spots are decided by a handful of counting stats.
