Tommy White Gets The Call To The Athletics; Prospect To Monitor
The Athletics are calling up third baseman Tommy White. White is ranked as the Athletics' 7th prospect per mlb.com.
Per Prospect Savant, White slashed .303/.345/.489 with 9 home runs, 23 extra-base hits, and 12 walks to 35 strikeouts across 252 plate appearances. The advanced stats largely back up his power, as he sits in the top 70th percentile in EV, Max EV, and Hard-Hit%.
White could stand to pull the ball a bit more, but his power will translate as long as the Athletics continue to play their home games at Sutter Health Park. The Athletics open the second half with a 3-game homestand vs the Nationals, then hit the road for a 6-game trip to Arizona and Minnesota.
The callup comes alongside the Athletics placing All-Star first baseman Nick Kurtz on the 10-day IL with a right thumb strain. It's unclear how long this injury will sideline Kurtz, but White stands to step in at 1B during his absence. The Athletics also placed Zack Gelof on the 10-day IL on July 10th due to a deep laceration in his knee. The Athletics have pieced together 3B this year using a combination of Gelof and Joshua Kuroda-Grauer. Gelof has posted strong numbers this year, but his underlying metrics do not support that success. Gelof has also started 15 games at 2B this year, so it's also possible the Athletics move Gelof to 2B and slide White into 3B. It's safe to say that if White can hit the ground running, he will have plenty of opportunity to stick around.
White is worth an add in deep roto and category leagues, and I would monitor his playing time in shallow leagues while his role becomes clearer.
