Round 1 Bias Check: 3 Players Getting Punished for the Wrong Reason

Nobody's getting a real discount in Round 1. Too many people are staring at the same numbers for that. But price and reasoning are two different things, and sometimes the price is fine while the reason people are drafting around a guy just isnt right.
This happens every year, honestly. Last season McCaffrey himself was coming off a lost 2024 that had people genuinely wondering if they could trust him again. Still went 10th overall. Turned into the number 1 overall player in football. Before that, Saquon Barkley was a late first, early second round pick with real questions about fitting into a crowded Eagles offense. Top 3 pick again by the end of Week 1. Before that, CeeDee Lamb went off the board at pick 13, basically round 2, with legit concerns about a scheme change in Dallas. Finished the year as the outright WR1.
Same story every time. Somebody good gets a real, understandable doubt attached to them, the market prices that doubt in perfectly, and then the doubt ends up mattering way less than everyone thought. Here are 3 guys this year I think are getting that treatment.
Christian McCaffrey, RB, San Francisco 49ers
The worry here is age and injury history. Fair worry too, hes turning 30 and has missed real time before. But hes going 5th overall right now, behind two backs who havent proven they can touch his level of production yet, and that's the part I cant get past. This is the reigning RB1. Not a tier, not a debate. Career high 413 touches, 2,126 scrimmage yards, 17 total touchdowns, played all 17 games. And this exact same doubt was baked into his price last summer too. He answered it about as clearly as a player possibly can.
Ashton Jeanty, RB, Las Vegas Raiders
People point to Jeantys rookie year like it was a letdown, and by 6th overall pick standards I guess it was. But RB11 is a top 12 finish. He got there on a Raiders offense that scored a league worst 14.2 points a game. Thats not a talent issue. Thats a good player squeezing a top 12 season out of one of the worst situations in the entire league. Look at what Bijan just did for comparison. Similar rookie workload, then a 35 percent jump in fantasy production in year 2. Jeanty gets a new head coach, an upgraded line, and actual quarterback play for the first time in his career. Hes still going 12th overall, like an RB11 finish in a broken offense was some kind of red flag instead of a floor.
Justin Jefferson, WR, Minnesota Vikings
Everyone calls last year a down season for Jefferson, and by his standards it was. Just 2 touchdowns, his lowest yardage total in years. People are reading that as decline. It wasnt decline though. Even in that down year he ranked 9th in target rate and tied for 6th in yards after catch among every qualifying receiver in football. Target share sat at 28.5 percent. The offense still ran through him every single week. What actually happened was a bad season of quarterback play and some brutal touchdown luck, nothing about Jefferson himself. Kyler Murray is throwing him the ball now, easily his best QB situation in years, and hes still going outside the top 10.
The Bottom Line:
None of these guys are secrets. Everyone knows the names. Thats sort of the point. Round 1 isnt about finding something nobody's heard of, its about catching the moment when a bad situation, an unlucky season, or just plain age gets mistaken for a decline in talent. McCaffrey did the job last year and is still getting drafted like the age matters more than the production. Jeanty put up a top 12 season in a broken offense and is still getting judged like the offense was his fault. Jefferson kept every underlying number elite through a rough year and is still priced like something actually changed. Worth checking which one youre actually worried about before you pass on any of them.
