Everyone has heard the story.
Las Vegas may have quietly landed one of the most intriguing high-upside cornerbacks in the 2026 class.
It‘s a classic narrative: highly regarded prospect suffers a major injury, loses a full season, and watches his draft stock collapse.
That’s Jermod McCoy.
The knee is the obvious reason he was still available at No. 101 when the Raiders traded up to grab him. The medical risk is real.
But after two preseason games, the on-field upside is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.
💪 The Athletic & Technical Profile
At 6-foot and nearly 190 pounds, McCoy owns the physical blueprint for a modern outside corner. His testing numbers — a 4.37-second 40-yard dash, 38-inch vertical and 10-foot-7 broad jump — are excellent.
Pure athleticism, however, is not what made him a potential first-round pick.
His instincts did.
In 2024 at Tennessee, McCoy started all 13 games and posted 44 tackles, four interceptions and 13 passes defended. Across 25 college games, he finished with six interceptions.
He plays the position with a wide receiver’s mentality, tracking the football naturally and attacking it at the catch point.
Combine that ball awareness with fluid man-coverage skills, recovery speed and length, and you get a pretty intriguing IDP profile: a corner whose fantasy value can come from game-changing turnovers rather than inflated tackle totals.
⚡️ Anticipation Over Pure Speed
What separates McCoy is the way those traits work together.
Speed allows him to recover.
Instincts allow him to anticipate.
Length lets him contest.
Ball skills allow him to finish.
That’s what I’m watching for.
At just 21 years old, if McCoy earns a full-time outside role in Las Vegas, I see a legitimate path to consistent pass-breakup and interception production.
The traits that create those plays are already there.
Now it’s about health, experience and refinement.
📈 Preseason Trajectory: Measuring the Rust
Evaluating McCoy right now requires looking at progression rather than obsessing over a single box score.
His preseason opener against Arizona was rough. He looked rusty, allowed two touchdown catches on two targets and finished with one tackle after missing the entire 2025 season.
That’s not the performance you want to see.
But it’s also not the performance I’m going to use to define a 21-year-old corner coming off a lost season.
His second outing against Houston was different.
McCoy played faster, covered tighter and started flashing the competitive edge that originally put him on first-round boards. He even produced a dominant coverage rep that drew plenty of attention despite a late flag.
That’s the progression I wanted to see.
Game 1: Shaking off the rust.
Game 2: Clear improvement.
Now I want to see whether that momentum continues.
That’s much more important to me than the preseason stat line.
Because the story isn’t that McCoy has arrived.
It’s that he’s getting better.
And that’s exactly what you want to see from a player who missed an entire season.

You’re not betting on McCoy to walk into Las Vegas and immediately become a weekly starter. You’re betting on a fourth-round stash who possesses legitimate difference-maker talent as his health and comfort return.
If McCoy is sitting on waivers, buried on a rival’s taxi squad or available for a late rookie pick, I’m making the move before the market catches up.
Because the traits are real.
The opportunity is there.
And after two preseason games, the arrow is pointing in the right direction. 📈
The only question left is whether the knee cooperates long enough for the talent to fully show itself.
