Bullpen Notes🗒️(9/14)
LAD: Alex Vesia pitched the 8th with a 4-0 lead and had no issue. Evan Phillips had the 9th and allowed a solo dong. Due to the score neither guy picked up a save or hold. There is a lot of talk about who could close here and I just think Scott is still the guy despite some struggles. Edgardo Henriquez hit the IL today and Phillips has allowed five dongs in just over 20 innings. If they did remove Scott it would become a committee which I hope doesn't happen.
TOR: The starter fell apart in the 7th and they used Paul Sewald to get the final two outs of the inning. Joe Mantiply started the 8th with a 5-4 lead and allowed a couples singles mixed around an out. Louis Varland came in an allowed a run to score that tied the game. He would return in the 9th with the game tied and allowed a run to score on an error. Varland was charged with a blown save and a loss. They didn't have Rogers tonight since he was resting and that is why Varland was needed for the extra outs. He was not up to the task but he remains one of the better closers in the game.
DET: Beau Brieske and Tyler Holton got ten outs from the 3rd through the 6th with the team down 2-0. They took a 4-2 lead and used Kyle Finnegan in the 7th. He allowed a couple singles, got a couple outs, and then allowed a three run dong. He was charged with a blown save. Tyler Kinley pitched the 8th with the score tied at 5-5 and he would pick up the win. They took the lead and used Kenley Jansen in the 9th and he allowed a lead off walk but got a game ending double play to pick up the save. Finnegan continues to suck and shouldn't be rostered but Kenley is the closer and keeps getting closer to 500 career saves.
NYM: Jonathan Pintaro pitched the 7th with the score 1-1 and allowed a lead off double. Dedniel Nunez who they have been using in high leverage spots had the 8th. He allowed a solo dong and ended up with the loss. Senga pitched the 9th and kept the game at 2-1. Williams is facing live batters this week and expects to return this weekend. That could potentially cost Senga his spot as the closer.
BAL: Josh Walker pitched the 6th and got a couple outs in the 7th with the score 1-1. Yennier Cano got the final out of the 7th and ended up picking the win. Grant Wolfram allowed a lead off single in the 8th with a 2-1 lead but he was able to pick up the hold. They went with Rico Garcia in the 9th and he was perfect picking up the save. It does appear the we have a switch at closer here. Garcia has now picked up three saves in a row while Kittredge has pitched an 8th inning. If Garcia is free he would be a guy to target for saves. Ryan Helsley could return this weekend which would add another late inning arm.
CHC: They used Ryan Rolison in the 8th and Ryan Zeferjahn in the 9th. Zef loaded the bases in the 9th but got out of it with a double play. I still think Webb is the closer but they might be leaning towards a committee.
MIN: Kody Funderburk got an out in the 6th to end the inning with the team down 1-0. They took a 2-1 lead and Jeff Hoffman pitched a perfect 7th to pick up a hold. Andrew Morris started the 8th and got one out while letting three on and one scored. A.J. Minter came in and faced three batters without getting an out. The final batter he faced hit a three run dong. Both guys allowed three runs and Morris was charged with a blown save and picked up the loss. Tommy Nance finished the game and allowed one more run. Morris has been bad for a month and Minter who had been decent finally fell apart. Gomez is the closer and Hoffman might be the next best option so I would avoid this bullpen outside of the 9th.
NYY: John Schreiber picked up the save getting the final four outs. They had a couple guys on in the 8th when he came in with a 7-3 lead so that was how he qualified for the save. He doesn't have fantasy value since he is behind the big three.
SFG: Trent Harris pitched the 7th with the team down 2-1. He did face the heart of the lineup. Carson Seymour pitched the 8th. It seems like Smith is still the closer here though Harris has been good enough to consider for the role as well. It's a bad team but I would probably lean Harris at this point.
STL: Justin Bruihl got the final out in the 7th with the bases loaded and the score 2-1. He would pick up a hold. Ryne Stanek pitched the 8th and allowed a couple batters to reach but picked up the hold. Riley O'Brien had the 9th and he let a couple guys on with one out but picked up the save. ROB is on thin ice here but they don't have many options to replace him. Soriano did convert yesterday but he has struggled just as much as ROB this last month plus.
COL: They were down for all of the bullpen innings but still used Jordan Romano in the top of the 9th. He pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout. It was 8-7 so it made sense to get him an inning and he is still the closer here.
SDP: Kyle Hart started the 6th with a 6-2 lead. He would get the first batter out before letting the next three reach with two scoring. Bradgley Rodriguez got out of the inning but allowed another Hart run that made it 6-5. BRod would return for the 7th and allow a solo dong that made it 7-6 but he picked up the hold. With an 8-6 lead Adrian Morejon pitched the 8th and allowed an RBI double that made it 8-7. He would pick up a hold as well. Mason Miller had the 9th and struck out a couple batters while allowing an infield single and picking up the save. The big three in the bullpen were a little shaky tonight but they got the job done.
LAA: Blake Weiman started the 7th with a 6-3 lead and allowed a two out solo dong. They went with Ryan Watson to get the final out of the 7th and he pitched a perfect 8th. Both guys picked up holds. Ben Joyce had the 9th and he allowed a couple walks but was able to get out of the jam and pick up the save. No Natera which is interesting but not surprising as he has struggled. Ben Joyce is the closer and Watson is the best option for holds.
ARI: Jonathan Loáisiga pitched in the 5th with a 5-3 deficit and allowed a couple singles before getting the final out. He would return for the 6th and pitch a perfect inning. Kevin Ginkel gave up a couple runs in the 7th that made it a 7-4 deficit. Justin Martinez had the 8th and loaded the bases but didn't allow a run. Juan Morillo had the 9th and allowed one baserunner but would pick up the win when they walked it off in the bottom of the inning. The bullpen remains a committee but I am moving JMart out of the mix. He doesn't pitch frequently enough and they haven't used him late in the game with the lead. Morillo, Garcia, and Ginkel are the most likely to pick up saves with Morillo leading the way.
MIA: Calvin Faucher pitched perfect 6th with a 5-4 lead and picked up a hold. Michael Petersen let the first two on in the 7th but struck the next three out and picked up a hold. Tyler Zuber had the 8th with a 7-4 lead and allowed a one out two run dong but picked up the hold after bouncing back in the inning. Pete Fairbanks started the 9th and walked the first batter before throwing one more pitch and leaving with an injury. Same thing he just came back from so it appears that his season is over. With Fairbanks out they went with Jack Ralston and he got an out before allowing a two run homer that ended it. He would be charged with a blown save and a loss. We just saw how the bullpen looks without Fairbanks. It will be a two man group with Faucher and Petersen leading the way though it wouldn't shock me to see others in the mix.
