Bullpen Notes🗒️(9/9)
DET: Tyler Holton pitched a perfect 5th and 6th inning with a 5-2 lead and picked up the win. Tyler Kinley got a couple outs in the 7th and let a couple on. Drew Sommers would finish the 7th and pitch the 8th. Both guys picked up holds. With a 7-2 lead in the 9th they went with Kyle Finnegan and he allowed a hit but no runs. Kenley is the closer and no one else has much value.
TOR: Bullpen game for the most part here. Braydon Fisher started and had just the first. Michael Lorenzen would give up a run in both the 3rd and 4th and get charged with the loss. They did use Tyler Rogers in the 7th and Louis Varland in the 8th down 2-0. Those two were just getting some work in with an off day tomorrow.
ATH: Brady Basso pitched four scoreless innings to start the game. Scott Blewett allowed a couple hits in the 5th and a walk in the 6th but no runs while picking up the win. Luis Medina was perfect in the 7th with a 2-0 lead and he picked up a hold. Hogan Harris pitched a perfect 8th against the top of the order and he got a hold. That left the 9th for Elvis Alvarado who gave up a two out single but picked up the save. With Basso starting today that leaves Harris as the only LHP in the bullpen and the guy who faces the best hitters late. That leaves some chances for Alvarado but Harris still seems like the best option in the 9th.
STL: Justin Bruihl came on in the 6th with a runner on first and got three outs. Luis Gastelum pitched the 7th with a 6-1 lead and had no issues. Things fell apart in the 8th. Cade Winquest started the inning and got two of the first three guys out. After that he hit a batter, walked a batter, and allowed an RBI single. They would pull him for George Soriano who allowed an infield single and back to back doubles that scored three more Winquest runs and two runs of his own. He was charged with a blown save and a loss. As bad as you think ROB has been Soriano has been worse. That is really why ROB has very little threat to his spot in the 9th.
SFG: They used Philip Abner and Tugboat Wilkinson to get through the 5th-8th innings with the team down. Abner would give up an unearned run and Tugboat would pick up the win. After taking the lead in the bottom of the 8th they turned to Trent Harris in the 9th and he was perfect getting two outs against the top of the order to pick up the save. This is a bit of a surprise as they used Harris over Smith. Back to back nights for Smith being passed over so we could see a committee forming. I would say Harris could be worth the add but I wouldn't expect much from the bullpen for the rest of the season.
SEA: Seranthony Domínguez pitched the 7th with a 3-1 lead and he walked the lead off batter but picked up a hold. Gabe Speier allowed a lead off dong in the 8th to make it 3-2 but picked up a hold after getting the next three out. Andrés Muñoz walked the lead off batter in the 9th but he got the save striking out two of the next three. Nice game for the bullpen as they avoided Bazardo who has been a guy who has struggled a lot recently. Muñoz is a strong option for saves.
BAL: Josh Walker got the final out of the 6th and three in the 7th. One man reached on an error but he got a double in the inning as well. The score was 8-5 in the 6th so he picked up a hold. With a 9-5 lead in the 8th Yennier Cano came in and let two on before getting an out. Rico Garcia would come in and get the next two out on four pitches. Garcia would return for the 9th and allow couple singles but he did get a save even though it was a four run lead. Garcia has been good enough to be considered for saves but I still think Kittredge will remain in the mix. Garcia is making a good case to be rostered.
MIA: They were down 8-3 in the 5th and used Michael Petersen who pitched a perfect inning. Calvin Faucher pitched the 6th with the same score and let a couple on but none in. They tied the game and used Josh Ekness to start the 7th. He hit one and walked two before being pulled for Tyler Zuber who would allow all three to score plus three of his own. Ekness was charged with a loss. Vodnik would give up a run in the 8th. They activated Pete Fairbanks today and as you can see with the usage of Faucher and Petersen with the team down five in the 5th and 6th he is the only guy worth rostering. Ekness has disappointment and should be cut if he hasn't already been.
NYM: Chris Devenski was charged with five runs in the 5th that turned a 8-3 lead into an 8-8 game. His time in the majors should be coming to an end. Daniel Duarte got out of the inning but allowed some of Devenski's runs and was charged with a blown save. He would pitch the 7th and pick up the win despite allowing a run. Jonathan Pintaro pitched the 8th and allowed a couple runs that made the score 15-11. Nate Lavender started the 9th and he was pitching back to back games. You could tell as his velo was down and he gave up three runs while getting one out. They brought in Tobias Myers who got the final two outs after allowing a single. He would pick up the save. Senga wasn't available which is the main reason we saw all this chaos. He is still the closer and the best option for saves.
HOU: Bryan King started the 6th with a 6-5 lead. He didn't get an out though one base runner reached on an error. AJ Blubaugh came in and got an out but walked a run in and allowed a grand slam. Enyel De Los Santos got the final out of the inning. King was charged with a loss, a blown save, and for runs (1 unearned). Blubaugh was also charged with two runs. Tatsuya Imai pitched the 7th and 8th to finish the game. This was a disaster for King and he went from being one of the better holds options to a guy who shouldn't be in the majors.
PHI: Jonathan Bowlan pitched the 7th with an 11-6 lead and he allowed a couple hits and a run. With the score 11-7 Alex McFarlane pitched the 8th and saw a man reach on a error. Jhoan Duran pitched the 9th with a four run lead and was perfect despite it not being a save situation. He remains the closer and the 8th is still a mystery with several guys in the mix.
LAA: With a 6-3 lead in the 7th Ryan Watson allowed a lead off single but got a couple outs. Tayler Saucedo would come in to face the LHB and he got the final out of the inning. Both guys picked up holds. Samy Natera Jr. had the 8th and he was pitching back to back days. He allowed a one out single but got though the inning and picked up a hold. Ben Joyce pitched the 9th with a 6-3 lead and he allowed a run after walking a batter. He picked up the save. This is what the bullpen should look like when everyone is available. Joyce is the closer and Natera is the 8th inning man who might see the occasional save chance like most 8th inning men.
KCR: Jose Cuas pitched the 6th with a 5-2 lead and let the first two on but didn't allow any runs. Anthony Gose had the 7th and he allowed a one out single. Craig Kimbrel gave up a couple hits in the 8th but got a double play that kept him from giving up runs. All three guys picked up holds. Nate Pearson pitched the 9th with the same 5-2 lead and he allowed a the first to one but got a game ending double play and picked up the save. Cruz had pitched back to back so I think he is still the closer here but every Pearson conversion makes me nervous.
CHC: Daniel Palencia pitched in the 6th with the team down 7-1. He allowed an unearned run. All this tells me is they are just trying to get him work for the postseason. That also means that Webb is still the closer here. Zef seems like he might be next in line for the 9th if Webb continues to struggle.
MIL: JoJo Romero pitched the 6th and 7th with a 7-1 lead and an 8-1 lead. He didn't allow any runs. Brandon Sproat pitched the 8th without issue. He would return for the 9th and walk four batters while getting one out. Abner Uribe came in and allowed all of Sproat's runs to score plus one of his own but he was able to end the game. He did not get a save. Megill was off after pitching back to back so nothing really changes here and that is why we saw Uribe in the 9th as well.
CWS: Sean Newcomb pitched the 6th with the team down 1-0. He would return for the 7th and allow three runs. No one else of importance pitched for the bullpen. Newcomb is third on the team in saves and can be cut I think at this point. I think he really only gets bulk saves. Taylor and Hudson are better options.
PIT: Bullpen game here and it saw all but two of the relievers pitch. Carmen Mlodzinski and Gregory Soto got holds in the 5th and 6th. Yohan Ramirez bailed out Camilo Doval in the 7th and picked up a hold. They used Luke Weaver in the 8th with a 4-1 lead and he allowed a lead off dong and three other base runners before getting out of the inning with a double play and picking up a hold. Per usual Mason Montgomery was perfect in the 9th protecting the two run lead and picking up the save. Monty is a stud and Weaver and Soto both offer some value for holds.
CIN: Tony Santillan gave up a couple runs in the 7th. He has been bad since returning from the IL and I would highly recommend dropping him if you haven't already.
