Bullpen Notes🗒️(9/6)
MIL: Antonio Senzatela got the final out of the 4th with the team down 6-3. They would tie it at 6-6 and he would return for the 5th. He loaded the bases before giving up a two run double and getting an out. Grant Anderson would come in and allow one more Senzatela run before getting out of the inning and pitching the next two. Senzatela was charged with a loss and three earned runs. With the score 9-7 in the 8th JoJo Romero came on and allowed a three runs but only one was earned. Abner Uribe got the final out of the inning with the score 12-7. I still like this bullpen but today wasn't a great day for some of the mid leverage guys.
CIN: Luis Mey pitched a perfect 6th with the score 9-6. Brock Burke allowed a lead off single in the 7th against the meat of the order and both guys picked up holds. They activated Graham Ashcraft and he started the 8th by walking two and allowing an RBI single. After a mound visit he would get the next three to get out of the inning and pick up the hold. Pierce Johnson started the 9th with a 12-7 lead and he got an out before a couple walks and an RBI single. After getting a groundout they pulled him for Emilio Pagán who got the final out and picked up a save. Ashcraft was a high leverage guy prior to the injury so I am sure they want to get him back to that level. I would be carful of adding him right away since there is going to be some rust. Pagan is the only guy I would roster and if I had to pick a guy for holds it would be Burke.
PHI: They turned to Alex McFarlane with a 4-1 lead in the 8th. He got an out, allowed a single, allowed a double, and then allowed a game tying three run dong. He was charged with a blown save. Brooks Raley got the final two outs of the inning. Jhoan Duran had the 9th with the game tied and allowed a double and triple that put them down one. He would end up with the loss. I wouldn't worry about Duran but the innings prior to the 9th continue to be brutal. This was the biggest spot McFarlane had pitched in this year and it didn't go well. I would avoid this team for holds.
ATL: Dylan Dodd pitched the 7th with the score 2-1. He allowed a couple solo dongs to make it 4-1. Dylan Lee had the 8th after they tied it and finally had a perfect outing against the middle of the order. He would pick up the win. With a 5-4 lead in the 9th Raisel Iglesias allowed a lead off single but nothing else and picked up the save. They need Lee to pitch like today if they want to have a real chance in the postseason.
PIT: Gregory Soto got two outs in the 6th with a 1-0 lead and picked up a hold. Carmen Mlodzinski allowed a walk in the 7th but nothing else. Camilo Doval allowed a one out single in the 8th and both of those guys picked up holds. With the same 1-0 lead in the 9th Mason Montgomery allowed a two out walk and picked up the save. Monty has been great since talking and he is looking like a stud. I see no reason why he wont hold the job for the remainder of this year and start next as the closer.
BOS: With a 3-1 lead in the 7th they used Erik Miller who was perfect and picked up a hold. Jovani Moran was also perfect in the 8th and he picked up a hold. Aroldis Chapman pitched the 9th and allowed a one out single but got the next two and picked up the save. Whitlock had pitched back to back earlier in the series so it's not surprising they gave him an extra day off. They are in pretty good shape to steal some rest days for guys. Chapman and Whitlock remain top tier options for saves and holds.
CHC: They lost but Daniel Palencia did pitch the 8th inning and allowed just a walk. Not ideal if you are expecting saves or holds from him but it is good to see him get a scoreless inning in. As long as Webb is active he is going to be the closer here. If he is not then it becomes a committee with Zef, Rolison, Thornton, and maybe Palencia.
DET: The score was 2-2 and they went with Tyler Holton, Drew Sommers, Tyler Kinley, and Kenley Jansen to get from the 6th to the 10th. None of them gave up a run or picked up any type of hold or save. With the score still tied at 2-2 in the 10th Kyle Finnegan came in and allowed a couple singles that ended the game. He took the loss as the ghost runner scored. This teams bullpen isn't very good and Kenley is the only guy to roster if you are desperate for saves.
CLE: With the score 2-2 Erik Sabrowski pitched a perfect 7th, Hunter Gaddis allowed a walk in the 8th, and Cade Smith struck out five of the six he faced. He would end up picking up the win after pitching the 9th and 10th and not allowing a run. This is how the bullpen should look in a game that they have the lead in. All three guys should be rostered for holds and saves.
SFG: Joel Kuhnel pitched the 7th with a 2-0 lead and picked up a hold. He has a path to some higher leverage spots if he pitches well in his opportunities. Carson Seymour had the 8th and it didn't go well. He allowed a solo dong to start and would get a couple outs while allowing a couple to reach before allowing three run dong that put them down 4-2. He was charged with a blown save and a loss. His run as the high leverage holds guy could be coming to an end and Trent Harris would be the guy that I expect will replace him. Smith is the only guy worth rostering and he is the closer.
NYM: Nate Lavender got the final out of the 5th with the team down 2-0. Jonathan Pintaro pitched the 6th and 7th. Tobias Myers who was just called back up had the 8th and would end up picking up the win. With a 4-2 lead in the 9th they went with Kodai Senga and he was perfect picking up the save. As long as Williams is on the IL Senga is the closer. They had been down for most of this one so the guys who pitched are not the top options though Lavender has been very good.
ARI: Juan Morillo was the first out of the bullpen in the 7th with a 3-1 lead. He got two quick outs before allowing two on. Brandyn Garcia would come in and face Alvarez who he got out. Both guys picked up holds. Jonathan Loáisiga pitched the 8th and allowed a run but picked up the hold. With a 3-2 lead in the 9th they turned to Kevin Ginkel who struck out the side and picked up the save. Justin Martinez wasn't available as they have been giving him two days off after an appearance. Just like I said last night the is a committee and there is no closer here. Ginkel joins the mix so you have four guys plus potentially JMart on days he is available who could all pick up saves.
TBR: Kevin Kelly allowed an unearned run in the 4th. Steven Matz ended up with a loss and a blown save pitching in the 4th and 5th. Ty Johnson made his debut pitching the 7th. Cole Sulser allowed a run in his first game since returning from the IL. The bullpen is pretty beat up and besides Kelly they didn't use any of the important guys.
TEX: Trevor Williams pitched the 4th and 5th and picked up the win. With the team up 7-5 in the 6th Chase Silseth pitched a perfect inning and got a hold. Tyler Alexander allowed a run in the 7th but picked up a hold. With an 8-6 lead in the 8th and the 9, 1, and 2 hitters coming up they went with the closer Jacob Latz. He allowed a two out single and picked up a hold. That left the 9th for Jakob Junis who was perfect and picked up the save. Terrible time to use Latz like this but he was facing the better part of the lineup. He is still the closer and Junis is the best option for holds.
STL: Cade Winquest got the last out in the 3rd and Cooper Hjerpe pitched the next four innings to pick up the win. With a 10-5 lead in the 8th Luis Gastelum came in an allowed a lead off dong. He has now allowed runs in his last two appearances. Ryne Stanek started the 9th and got two outs but allowed two runners to reach. They pulled him for George Soriano who allowed a two RBI single (both Stanek runs) before getting the final out. He would pick up the save. The bullpen continues to struggle and as bad as ROB has been Soriano has been worse. ROB is still the closer here.
SEA: Andrés Muñoz pitched a perfect 9th with a strikeout and picked up the save in the 2-0 game. He was the only reliever used today. I doubt this saves the season but they had to win this one if they have any chance left.
SDP: Bradgley Rodriguez pitched the 7th with a 3-0 lead. He was perfect and picked up the hold. They added a run but still used Adrian Morejon in the 8th. He struggled allowing three runs but got out of the inning before it got worse. Mainly hits allowed and he got a huge caught stealing. With a 4-3 lead they called in Mason Miller for the 9th. He allowed a two out walk but picked up the save. He continues to be the best closer in the game and despite his struggles today Morejon is one of the best guys for holds in the game.
CHW: Bullpen game today that saw Bryan Hudson start and get five outs. Jordan Hicks followed up getting the next four. Hagen Smith who has been very good pitched the 4th, 5th, and 6th and picked up the win. With a 4-0 lead they turned to Grant Taylor in the 7th and he allowed a lead off dong. He would walk a batter and return to pitch a perfect 8th. They blew it open and Tyler Davis pitched the 9th with a 10-1 lead. Taylor hadn't pitched in a couple days so this wasn't shocking. The game was close when they used him. He will now have a couple days off. He is also the best option for saves but it remains a committee. Hudson seems like he would be next up for saves but he started today so that brings his role into question. This is one of the bullpens that it is hard to trust for consistent saves from one guy.
LAD: Brock Stewart got three outs in the 4th with guys on and keep the score at 4-1 with them down. Blake Treinen would pitch the 5th and allow a walk in his first action since coming off the IL. Bobby Miller made his season debut pitching the 6th, 7th, and 8th. He allowed a run in the 6th and was in line for the loss until they rallied in the bottom of the 8th inning and he got the win. Edgardo Henriquez had the 9th with a 7-5 lead and allowed a lead off walk. He did end up picking up the save. They had Dreyer up which tells you the level of confidence they have in Henriquez despite this solid performance. Scott was off today after pitching back to back and he remains the closer here. They use too many different righties late in the game so I like Vesia as the best option for holds.
WSN: Brad Lord came on in the 5th with the team down 4-2 and allowed an inherited runner to score and one of his own. He would return and pitch the 6th. Will Dion pitched the 7th with a 5-4 lead and allowed a lead off walk. He would return for the 8th with and get two quick outs before allowing a single, a walk, and a three run dong that put them down 7-5. He was charged with a blown save and picked up the loss. Don't trick yourself into believing they have something in here as he throws about 90. It was the 38th blown save of the year for this bum team and it's terrible manager. He has been handcuffed with his terrible bullpen.
