Bullpen Notes🗒️(9/5)
SFG: The game wasn't that close for the bullpen innings but they used five guys. Carson Seymour got an out in the 7th after walking in a run. He picked up a hold. Newly signed Joel Kuhnel also pitched in the 7th and allowed two of the three he faced to reach. Jason Foley allowed two runs in the 9th. Dylan Smith remains the closer and the only guy worth rostering. Seymour is a deep holds guy if you are looking.
MIA: Victor Vodnik got an out to get out of the 5th. He returned for the 6th allowing a single and getting an out before being replaced by Calvin Faucher. He would let the Vodnik run score to make it 6-4 before getting out of the inning. Fulton and Zuber finished off the game. Faucher got the most recent save but was back in the 6th for whatever reason. I don't think this team really has a closer but Petersen and Faucher are in the most likely to see the 9th. Fairbanks has started throwing so he could be back soon.
CHC: Caleb Thielbar came on in the 5th and allowed a two run dong with an inherited runner on. He would get out of the inning and pitch a perfect 6th with a 6-4 lead. Trent Thornton allowed a solo dong in the 7th and hit a couple batters before Ryan Rolison replaced him. Rolison got the final out and returned for the 8th getting a out and allowing a double before being pulled for Ryan Zeferjahn. Zef would get the final two outs of the 8th and pitch the 9th in the 6-5 game to pick up the save. Clearly Webb is still unavailable. Palencia hasn't pitched well yet but it had been two days since he pitched so he should have been available. The committee here makes sense as they tread water until Webb is ready to return. I would expect Palencia's next appearance to be in a non-save situation since he wasn't used today.
PHI: Jonathan Bowlan pitched the 7th with a 4-1 lead and allowed a two out solo dong. José Alvarado had the 8th against the top of the lineup and allowed a lead off single but a double play helped him out of the inning. Both guys picked up holds. With a 4-2 lead in the 9th Jhoan Duran was perfect and picked up the save. Alvarado has found himself back in high leverage spots thanks to the rest of the bullpen being ass. They really don't use Raley that much for whatever reason. I wouldn't roster anyone for holds here but Bowlan, Kerkering, Alvarado, and Raley are all in the mix.
MIL: DL Hall allowed an inherited runner to score in the 4th. That tied the game at 2-2. He would return and pitch the 5th. JoJo Romero had the 6th and allowed a lead off dong that put them down 3-2. With the score tied at 3-3 in the 7th Aaron Ashby allowed a lead off dong that put them down 4-3. He would end up taking the loss. Grant Anderson allowed a run in the 8th. I still like the bullpen and this game had a long rain delay which might have thrown off some routines. Ashby and Romero should be better on most nights but Uribe and Megill are the 8th and 9th inning guys.
CIN: Julian Garcia pitched the 5th and Tejay Antone pitched the 6th. Tony Santillan's bad season continued as he allowed a run in the 7th that tied the game at 3-3. He was charged with a blown save but he would pick up a win. Brock Burke pitched a perfect 8th and picked up a hold. Emilio Pagán loaded the bases in the 9th with one out and a 5-3 lead but he got the next two guys to fly out and picked up another save. Pagán continues to be a stud and while he flirts with danger he has been getting out of it. Santillan should be cut and Burke is probably the best option for holds.
TEX: They used Tyler Alexander down 2-1 in the 7th. He allowed a couple two out singles. Jakob Junis pitched the 8th and allowed a run on three two out singles. They tied it and Latz pitched a perfect 9th. He would return for the 10th getting an out, hitting a batter, allowing a three run dong, and being pulled after allowing another walk. Adam Macko got the final out. Tough outing for Latz who does normally pitch two innings. It wasn't a blown save so his role as the closer is safe.
TBR: Kevin Kelly started the 8th with a 3-1 lead. He allowed a solo dong, got an out, and gave up a single. He would pick up a hold but this was not the ideal time for him to struggle. Cam Booser would come in and allow a run scoring double (Kelly's run) before getting the final two out. He was charged with a blown save. Tyler Wells pitched the 9th and 10th and one runner reached on an error. He would pick up the win. Prior to the game Garrett Cleavinger went on the IL. The high leverage guys are now Kelly and Wells with Baker as the closer assuming he was just sick yesterday. Wells is the closer handcuff if Baker is more than sick.
MIN: Kody Funderburk pitched a perfect 6th with a 5-4 lead. He would pick up a hold. Jeff Hoffman got through the bottom of the order in the 7th allowing a one out double. He would return for the 8th and get the first out. A.J. Minter would come on and allow a double while getting the next two outs. Both guys picked up holds. Yoendrys Gomez pitched the rare perfect 9th with a 6-4 lead and picked up the save. This is pretty much how I would expect the bullpen to look right now with Morris starting. They are going to need Hoffman in some big spots but Gomez is the closer.
KCR: Craig Kimbrel pitched the 7th with the score tied at 3-3. He allowed a lead off walk which would come around to score but it was unearned due to an error. He would pick up the loss. They have been using him in big spots and really this loss was due to an error. Don't roster him.
TOR: Mason Fluharty got the final out of the 6th with a runner on first. He would return for the 7th with a 4-3 lead and allow a walk while getting two outs. He ended up picking up a win. Paul Sewald got the final out of the inning and picked up a hold. Tyler Rogers had the 8th and let the first two on before getting a double play and the final out. He would pick up a hold. Louis Varland was perfect in the 9th with a 4-3 lead and picked up the save. Rogers and Varland are two of the best for holds and saves.
HOU: Enyel De Los Santos was the first one in and allowed an inherited runner to score in the 5th. He also pitched a perfect 6th. Kai-Wei Teng started the 7th and got an out before walking two batters. He would get a hold as the score was 3-1. AJ Blubaugh allowed a double that scored one Teng run but got the next two out. Blubaugh returned for the 8th with a 3-2 lead and allowed a lead off solo dong that tied the game. He was charged with a blown save. Josh Hader pitched a perfect 9th. Bryan King who just returned allowed the ghost runner to score in the 10th and picked up the loss. They lost Okert to the IL yesterday and that is gonna hurt. Maybe King can step up and look like the guy from early in the season. Abreu is still the guy to roster for holds and Blubaugh could be a deep option for holds.
ARI: Kevin Ginkel got the final two outs of the 7th with a runner on and the team down 3-2. Juan Morillo pitched the 8th against the middle of the lineup with the game tied at 3-3. Jonathan Loáisiga allowed a lead off walk in the 9th but got through the inning. Brandyn Garcia kept the ghost runner from scoring in the 10th and picked up the save. This is really just a full blown committee. JMart still hasn't seen a save chance and is being used but rested quite often which we expected. Morillo had a couple saves but still pitches in the 7th and 8th. Same with Garcia and I guess Loaisiga will get one at some point too. For saves you are probably just avoiding this team but for holds and some save possibility you can add Garcia, Morillo, and JMart.
COL: Zach Agnos got the final out of the 5th with the team down 3-0. He would return for the 6th with the team up 6-3 and struggle. He faced four batters and got one out on a sac fly. with the score now 6-5 Brennan Bernardino came in and got the final two outs. He would end up picking up a win. Jaden Hill pitched a perfect 7th with the score 6-5. Nick Frasso pitched the 8th with the score 10-5. Juan Mejia started the 9th and faced four batters. Three of them reached and with one out, one on, and the score 10-7 they brought in Jordan Romano. He would get out of the inning without issue and pick up the save. They used him tonight so no worries about last nights blown save. He is still the closer and Bernardino still pitches in the big spots prior to the 9th.
WSN: Clayton Beeter started the 7th with a 4-2 lead and he was facing the bottom of the order. He would get a couple outs and let a couple on before allowing a three run dong that put them down 5-4. He was charged with a blown save and a loss. Erik Tolman got the final out of the 7th and returned for the 8th. He would be charged with a run and only get one out. Jack Sinclair got the final two outs and allowed Tolman's run when he hit a batter with the bases loaded. This bullpen should be avoided. No idea why they used Beeter in this spot since it wasn't even that important. I suppose Ribalta could be rostered but they have no interest in having a true closer.
LAD: Alex Vesia came on in the 7th with a runner on second and the team down 3-2. He would allow the runner to score but he got the three outs to end the inning. He would pick up the win. Evan Phillips pitched a perfect 8th with a 5-4 lead and picked up a hold. Tanner Scott had the 9th with a 6-4 lead and he got two quick outs before allowing three hits that scored a run. He would get the final out with runners on second and third to pick up the save. Scott is the closer here and no one is threating his job. They occasionally use him in the 7th or 8th if it is a big spot. I like Vesia for holds but Phillips, Henriquez, Stewart could be considered.
ATH: They had a 6-0 lead going into the 8th and used Geoff Hartlieb who allowed a run. With a 6-1 lead Elvis Alvarado pitched the 9th and he looked like he used too. He allowed a run on a wild pitch and let three guys on but he did get the final out. Harris is the guy to roster for saves even if it is somewhat of a timeshare in the 9th.
