Bullpen Notes 6/14/26
MIA
Nice outing for the bullpen. Faucher pitched the 7th allowing a hit and picking up a hold. Zuber had the 8th picking up a hold. Fairbanks pitched the 9th and allowed a two out solo homer but got the save. Fairbanks ERA is still a little inflated but he has always been around a 3.00. He isn't losing the 9th and while I like Petersen as the holds guy they have been willing to use pretty much anyone to get the ball to Fairbanks.
BAL
Rico Garcia pitched in the 7th and allowed a couple runs. It was against the bottom of the lineup so I don't really get the usage here. Helsley should be back for the next game on Tuesday which means Garcia is going to go back to his fireman role. He would be a holds option. Helsley is the closer when he returns no question about that.
SDP
Decent day for the bullpen. Bradgley Rodriguez pitched the 6th and let a couple on but didnt allow any runs. He picked up a hold. Adam struggled in the 7th allowing a run against the top of the order but Morejon came in got out of the 7th and pitched in the 8th. Both guys picked up holds. Miller came in to get the final out of the 8th with one runner on. He also pitched a perfect 9th to pick up the save. We know the top three guys are studs here but Rodriguez seems to be the man who has replaced Estrada. If you need a sleeper hold guy he would be a decent option though he hasn't been great since moving into the higher leverage spots.
WSN
Poulin started and Beeter pitched the 9th. Beeter hadn't pitched since June 9th so he was getting in some work. He is the best option to pick up a save but they like using a committee. That brings Dicky Love and Varland into the mix.
SEA
They got mauled but tried to get Munoz a work inning. It didn't go well as he faced two batters getting neither out before leaving with bask spasms. Tough injury to tell how bad it is. We saw Erik Miller for the SFG spend the minimum on the IL with a back issue and look like sh*t since returning. Hopefully Munoz avoids the IL but if he doesn't the add is Jose Ferrer. He has already gotten a couple saves and he should be next up despite his recent struggles.
TOR
They got burned by not having Varland or Rogers available. Hoffman pitched a scoreless 8th inning but they went to the 9th with the game tied and Braydon Fisher and Tommy Nance ended up giving up 5 runs. Those guys were not ready for that kind of high leverage situation. The bullpen will be fine though and if they get Yimi Garcia back he might be the final high leverage piece they need. Otherwise they could always make a move at the deadline.
ARI
Morillo pitched the 7th and picked up the win. No issues and it was a nice bounce back from yesterday. Ginkel had the 8th and he got a hold. He let a couple on with one out but get through the inning run free. Sewald took the 9th and despite walking the leadoff guy allowed no runs and picked up the save. They have a really good bullpen and while a lot of guys have holds Ginkel's last three appearances have been in the 8th so he could be a sneaky source of holds.
CIN
The bullpen blew another game today. This was earlier than normal. Antone had a 2 run lead in the 6th but allowed a two run homer that tied it. One run was unearned as a guy had gotten on due to an error. Moll pitched the 7th with the game tied and had no issue. Like I said the other night Zach Maxwell had pitched well enough to see some late inning action and he got the 8th. He allowed a leadoff homer that put them down and he ended up taking the loss. Santillan is the closer here despite his struggles and while Moll is an option they really dont have much else.
CWS
It was a bullpen game for the most part. Bryan Hudson started and allowed a run. Sean Newcomb got them into the 4th inning without allowing anything. Fredde who is the normal starter got them to the 7th. Unfortunately they brought in Grant Taylor with a 6-1 lead. He allowed a run in the 7th and a run in the 8th so by his standards it was not one of his better outings. That lead to Seranthony Domínguez getting his 1st save chance in over two weeks. It went about how all of his chances go. Couple walks, a hit, a run and three outs. He did nothing to make you believe that he is any different than the guy they sort of removed from the 9th. They have a bunch of LHP in the bullpen so it was kind of disappointing to see Hudson start. I still can't back Taylor as the closer. They don't want him to use him in a one inning role. Domínguez is and always will be an adventure. Those are my top three candidates to get a save but I suppose some of the other low leverage guys might see a rare chance.
MIL
Dont worry about what you saw here today. Uribe hadn't pitched since the 8th so his 6th inning appearance was just work. Ashby hadn't pitched since the 10th and he got two work innings in as well. They had a 4 run lead when both guys were pitching. I think Megill is the closer but Uribe is right there with him. I would like to see what who they use for the next chance.
STL
Another ugly outing for the top level holds guys here. Romero started the 7th with a 4-2 lead. He got an out but allowed a walk and three straight singles one of which scored a run. Soriano came on with the bases loaded and allowed a single that tied the game but got the final two outs. He also got charged with a blown save. The brought Soriano back out for the 8th and after getting the 1st two outs he allowed back to back doubles which resulted in another run scoring. That ended up being the run that got him charged with the loss. Right now the whole bullpen is struggling so they all really aren't in jeopardy of losing their jobs. ROB is the closer and Romero, Soriano, and Stanek will all see chances at holds.
MIN
Banda came on in the 7th and allowed a inherited runner to score and a walk before getting the final out. They were down 4-2 at the time. After they tied up the game in the bottom of the inning Morris pitched the 8th allowing only a single. He ended up picking up the win when they took the lead in the bottom half of the 8th. They did end up using Yoendrys Gomez in the 9th with a one run lead and he didn't allow a runner getting the save. Gomez has good stuff and he should close but they seem to be more interested in using a committee. He really doesn't even play the fireman role. Maybe today will be what earns him some trust in the 9th.
COL
Game was a blowout but shoutout to Eiberson Castellano who picked up his 1st save in his first MLB appearance going three shutout innings in the 23-8 mauling.
ATH
They allowed 23 runs so nothing good happened here. Luis Medina gave up 6 runs in the 5th. Brady Basso gave up 4 runs in his 1.2IP and Scott Barlow gave up 4 runs in his .2IP. There was a time I though Medina could be a sneaky holds option but those days are over. Barlow could still see some holds but I would also look elsewhere. As long as Alvarado is pitching well Barlow wont see anymore save chances like he did earlier in the season.
LAA
They used five of the seven pitchers in the bullpen. Most pitched well but in the 8th inning Sam Bachman melted down. The game was tied at the time. He allowed a leadoff walk and things went downhill fast. When all said and done he had allowed two homers and 5 runs and ended up taking the loss. Not that it mattered in the game but Ryan Zeferjahn pitched the 9th so it does look like he is the most likely to pickup a save here.
TBR
True bullpen game here. Casey Legumina started and Ian Seymour was the bulk guy. Neither guy should be rostered if you are looking for saves or holds. Kevin Kelly pitched the 6th and 7th allowing only a double over the two innings and picking up a win. They went into the bottom of the 8th with a 5 run lead and turned to Kimbrel. He got an out while loading the bases with a hit batter and two walks. He shouldn't be on the MLB roster at this point. Garrett Cleavinger got out of the inning and got credited with a hold. He is a sneaky strong option if you are looking for holds. Baker took the 9th since he hadn't pitched since June 9th and he had no issue. He is a top tier closer.
TEX
Junis struggled in the 8th allowing a run on three hits. He did pick up a save. Latz came on to get the final out of the 8th and looked great in the 9th having no problem getting the bottom of the order out. His fastball looks good and he challenges guys with it. That is what you want from a closer. Latz is moving up the tiers as a closer and Junis is a good holds option.
