Bullpen Notes 6/13/26
STL
They used the big name guys in what should have been an easier win. Ryne Stanek was good in the 7th up 5. Chris Roycroft started the 8th, got an out and put a couple guys on which forced in Jojo Romero. Romero allowed a run scoring single (Roycroft run) and got a double play to end the inning with a 4 run lead. ROB came on for the 9th and walked the bases loaded before buckling down and getting the final three outs. He was charged with a run but did not pick up a save. Pretty much the same story here as the last month or so. Jojo and ROB have struggled but not enough to lose the 8th or 9th.
MIN
I remember some of their Twitter accounts celebrating the Justin Lawrence pickup. They obviously hadn't watched him in PIT the last two seasons. He was charged with 4 runs in the 7th and that was the difference in the game. Travis Adams got the last 7 outs. They should DFA Lawrence as he is not turning into the next Gomez. He should also not be rostered anywhere.
NYY
Cruz ran into some trouble in the 8th walking two, getting two outs, and loading the bases with a walk. He got out of the inning and picked up the win after they scored in the 9th. Bednar picked the save with a perfect three strikeout 9th. Both guys are very good options for saves and holds.
TOR
The Yankees got to Varland as he gave up a 2 run homer in the top of the 9th. The game was tied at the time but it was the 1st homer he had giving up this season. He had pitched last night so his stuff might not have been as good. He's the closer and well see how he responds to this but I'm not worried.
PIT
Mixed bag for the bullpen. Montgomery allowed the starters run to score and was charged with a blown save in the 6th. He also pitched the 7th allowing a double. Yohan Ramirez pitched the 8th allowing the 1st two to reach but got out of it and picked up a win. Gregory Soto had the 9th with a one run lead and allowed a leadoff single before getting out of the inning. They need a late inning RHP so maybe Ramirez fills that role. Soto is still locked in as the closer and this was a nice outing after his last two.
SEA
Jose Ferrer struggled a bit again. He is in a weird spot because while I think he is next in line for saves both Bazardo and Speier seem like better holds options. It has been a rough week so you could make the case for cutting him. I still strongly believe he would take over if Munoz was removed or hurt.
WSN
PJ Poulin is back in the majors. That is notable because he gives them another LHP. He could challenge Dicky Love for late inning work. They both pitched today with Poulin coming in 1st and having the better inning. Both guys did pick up holds as well.
CIN
I don't normally have positive things to say about the bullpen but today they pitched well. Caleb Ferguson got out of the 6th and ran into some trouble in the 7th. They used Chris Petty to get though the 7th and he pitched the 8th picking up the win. Both guys were in with the game tied. As expected they brought in Tony Santillan with a one run lead in the 9th. He got through the middle of the lineup with three groundouts to pick up the save. He managed to hit 96 so if he can do that he would be back to what he was throwing last year. I wouldn't expect it though and while he is the closer his ERA is almost 6.
ARI
Juan Morillo was the only man used out of the bullpen. He struck out three but allowed a homer to the 9 hitter. He took the 8th with the game tied and ended up with the loss. I think he is pretty close to a drop at this point but has one of the better arms in the bullpen. He is in a couple week slump.
ATL
Dominant outing for the bullpen. Lee, Fuentes, Suarez and Iglesias got the final 10 outs. Three holds and a save. The only guy who ran into any trouble was Iglesias and he allowed a couple runners but got a double play to get out of the inning.
DET
They got Kenley an inning of work in the 8th. It was his 1st since returning. The team was down. Finnegan was back in the 5th and 6th. He remains a decent holds option with Kenley as the closer.
CLE
The bullpen pieced together a nice outing. Despite all four guys who pitched allowing base runners they didn't allow a run. Holderman, Gaddis, Herrin picked up holds and Smith picked up the save getting the final 4 outs. It is a great bullpen to look for holds in and Gaddis and Herrin are the guys to add. Smith is a top notch closer
BOS
Upside down day for the bullpen. Slaten pitched in the 6th which isn't shocking due to his recent struggles but the game was tied. He also faced the bottom part of the lineup. Whitlock had the 7th with the game tied and the top of the lineup coming up. He was good and ended up picking up the win. They took a two run lead in the 8th and turned to Tyron Guerrero who got an out, allowed a homer, single, and hit a batter before getting pulled. Danny Coulombe came in and got the final two outs to keep them up 4-3. They tacked on a couple in the bottom of the 8th and Chapman came on to get the save. Despite allowing a lead off single he had no other issues in the inning.
HOU
Enyel De Los Santos gave up a couple runs in the 6th. That is now 6 runs in his last 4 appearances. He can be cut in most leagues. Alimber Santa got through he 6th and 7th with the team down. King got the win pitching in the 8th after they took the lead. King remains a strong option for holds. They elected not to use Hader back to back nights so Bryan Abreu ended up getting the 9th. He allowed a double but got the next batter to line into a double play that ended the game. No threat to Hader in the 9th but I would rather roster Abreu than De Los Santos if I had to pick.
KCR
Things were going moderately well until the 8th. Daniel Lynch pitched the 7th getting a hold. Strahm started the 8th with a two run lead and hit a batter before allowing his daily homer. That tied the game and after getting an out they pulled him for Alex Lange who closed out the inning. Lange stayed on for the 9th and allowed an unearned run so they charged him with a loss. At this point Strahm is a cut and they really need to stop using him. Lynch should pitch the 8th. Lange's job is safe in the 9th as I cant knock a guy for allowing an unearned run with the game tied.
PHI
Pretty rough day for some members of the PHI bullpen. Kerkering pitched the 6th with a 5 run lead getting the back of the lineup out. He had no issues. José Alvarado pitched the 7th against the LHBs in the top of the order and allowed a two run homer. Keller had the 8th with a 4 run lead and he allowed three runs in the inning. Those two poor outings allowed Duran to get a save chance in the 9th and he converted with no issue. I'm not worried about Keller. He is still the 8th inning guy and Duran has the 9th in lockdown.
MIL
Megill pitched the 9th with the team down one. He allowed a single and a walk but struck out three guys. His fastball was hitting 100 on the ESPN box score. He does seem to have his velo back and while I still cant say for sure he has the 9th inning you certainly aren't cutting him. We wait another day to see who they turn to with a save chance between Megill and Uribe. My pick is and has been Megill.
ATH
Nice night for the bullpen from the 7th inning on. Barlow took the 7th picking up a hold and allowing just a walk. Leiter pitched the 8th like he typically does. He allowed just a hit and picked up a hold. That left the 9th for Elvis Alvarado. Once again he was dominant striking out a couple while picking up the save. He had multiple pitches over 100 and was locating. He continues to look like one of the best since returning to the majors. Dallas Braden even reference Mason Miller on the broadcast and while he didn't outright say they were the same we are all starting to think he has the talent. Harris is still around but if Alvarado keeps looking like this the job will be his.
TBR
Horrible couple innings for the bullpen. It was a one run game when Garrett Cleavinger gave up a couple in the 6th. Both runs were allowed by Craig Kimbrel who slower fans had been clamoring to get back. Cole Sulser pitched in the 7th allowing 4 runs and getting two outs. He should be cut at this point. The bullpen could use some help but Baker is a strong option at closer and I think Cleavinger is a good candidate for holds despite todays outing.
LAA
Kirby Yates got some work in pitching the 9th with the team up 8-0. He might still be in the closers mix and he might not. I think it is between him and Ryan Zeferjahn while Sam Bachman remains the holds guy in the 8th.
SFG
They announced Kilian was the closer the other day. He got some work in tonight. He is a risky option and if he blows a save or two I would guess he is back out of the 9th.
