Bullpen Notes 6/12/26

PIT

Wilber Dotel got lit up again. That is now 10 runs (1 unearned) over his last two appearances. This is what can happen when a low leverage guy gets bumped up in the bullpen. They need a RHP to help them late in the game.

WSN

They got mauled but Paxton Schultz and Gus Varland once again pithed in the 7th, 8th, and 9th. Today was better than the other day but they each still allowed a run. Varland is still hanging onto some relevance in the 9th due to the committee they use.

DET

Not much happened in the game as they were down for most of it and used the lesser guys. Anderson gave up a run in a three hit inning. They also activated Kenley which should push Will Vest out of the 9th inning. Hopefully the brief rest will help Kenley get his game back otherwise he might just be cooked.

CLE

Easy work for the bullpen. The starter got into the 8th but didn't retire a batter. They brought in Gaddis who bounced back from his 8th inning blown save last outing to pick up a hold. Cade Smith breezed thought the 9th. These are the two top options in the bullpen for saves and holds. Herrin is the LHP that will get some holds as well but he is not the main 8th inning guy.

ARI

Big bullpen effort tonight. Thompson and Loaisiga pitched early, Clarke had the middle innings, and Ginkel pitched the 8th with the game tied picking up the win. Sewald picked up the save in the 9th. He didn't have an issue. I still like Morillo as the 8th inning holds guy over Ginkel but they have used Ginkel later in the game recently. Sewald is the closer and they should get a boost if Puk returns this month.

CIN

Tejay Antone was the 1st man in ending the 6th and pitching the 7th. He has one hold and one save and with his stuff I wouldn't roster him. Zach Maxwell pitched the 8th. He got two outs and loaded the bases before getting a strikeout to end the inning. His last three outings have been good and he has earned more looks in high leverage spots. With his 10+ ERA he is not a guy I would roster. Brock Burke finally got a 9th inning with the game tied. Unfortunately he got burned by an error that would have been the third out. After the error he allowed a couple more runs and they ended up losing by three. These guys were all used with the game tied so that tells us that Santillan and Moll are the two top options so they are most likely to pick up a save.

TOR

Mason Fluharty pitched the 6th and Braydon Fisher pitched the 7th. They both allowed runners but no runs and picked up holds. Tyler Rogers had the 8th and Louis Varland pitched the 9th. They got through the top of the lineup and neither allowed a runner. Rogers is the 8th inning man and a great holds option and Varland is quickly becoming one of the best closers in the game.

KCR

They were down 8 before the 1st inning ended so it became a bullpen game. Erceg pitched two innings and threw 43 pitches which is wild. They actually pulled within one by the 9th inning but they brought in Strahm who allowed his mandatory homer to put them back down two. I wouldn't want to roster Erceg or Strahm and instead would chose Lange for saves and Lynch for holds.

HOU

They're starter didn't make it out of the 1st either so they used a bunch of guys. Enyel De Los Santos started the 8th but let three on while getting one out before getting pulled for King. King hit a batter, walked a batter, and allowed an infield single. Both of the runs that scored were charged to De Los Santos. Hader ended up picking up the save and he had no issues doing so. For me King is the holds guy to own as he should see the 8th more often than not and obviously Hader is the 9th inning guy and one of the better closers.

NYM

They went with Brooks Raley in the 8th against the middle of the Braves order. Two LHB and a switch so it made sense to use him instead of Weaver. They also had a four run lead. It didn't go well for Raley as he got two outs but allowed three hits and a run. Williams came on and allowed one more Raley run before getting out of the 8th inning. Williams went on to pitch the 9th with a two run lead and only allowed a double. Williams is a mid level guy in the 9th and Raley and Weaver are the guys to roster for holds.

STL

They used Soriano in the 6th to help the starter get out of a jam. He allowed an inherited runner to score. They had a 7-4 lead going into the 7th and turned to Gordon Graceffo. He got a couple outs and walked a couple batters before getting pulled for Stanek. Stanek gave up a three run homer before getting the final out of the 7th and the game was now tied at 7. They took back the lead in the top of the 8th but Stanek allowed a couple solo homers to put them back down by 1. Stanek ended up with a blown save and a loss for his efforts. The bullpen hasn't been great the last month plus. Graceffo might not be ready for the step up in leverage. Romero and ROB remain the 8th and 9th inning options with Soriano as a holds sleeper and likely next in line closer.

MIN

Rough start for the bullpen followed by a strong finish. Rogers and Orze gave up 4 runs in the 7th. Rogers walked a couple and Orze walked a run in. Control was an issue for both. They turned a one run lead into a three run deficit and Orze was charged with a blown save. They tied the game back up and used Gomez to start the 8th. He struggled getting an out and allowing three singles one of which scored a run. Banda came on and got the last two outs of the inning with the team down one. They took a one run lead back and turned to Andrew Morris for the 9th. He got three outs and picked up save number 2 on the season. It seemed like Morris was out as his last couple appearances had been in the 5th but as we have learned everyone closes here. Gomez is still my guy but Banda is likely the LHP option and Morris might replace Orze as another RHP who could see a save. I would only roster Gomez here.

LAA

Interesting 9th inning here but well start with the 6th where Chase Silseth picked up a hold. After that they turned to Mitch Farris who is arguable the last man in the bullen with a two run lead. They had a day off yesterday so I was a little surprised. Ferris pitched pretty well in the 7th and 8th and they let him try and get through the 9th with the same two run lead. That did not go as well as he allowed a couple singles, one that scored a run and a walk. He also got two outs. They pulled him after the run scoring single for Ryan Zeferjahn who walked his normal batter to load the bases but struck the next guy out to pick up the save. Yates really should be out of the 9th but Zef has walks 25 in 32 innings which is absurd for any scrub pitcher let alone a potential closer. They have yet to give Bachman a chance so I would think it is Zef or Yates in the 9th both of which are extremely risky.

ATH

Sterner pitched the 6th allowing all four runs COL scored. Three of those were charged to the starter. He gave up a three run homer. Mason Barnett was the next man in and he pitched the 7th and got two outs in the 8th before being pulled for Hogan Harris. Harris got out of the 8th and pitched a perfect 9th for the save. Very disappointing as I was hoping to see Alvarado. Dont get too concerned though as this should be a duo. Harris hasn't run away with the role and they still lack multiple LHP in the bullpen so Alvarado is still worth adding.

SFG

They were down all game but Ryan Walker did return to the bullpen and pitched the 9th. Eric Miller pitched in the 5th and allowed a homer. He is still struggling. Winn and Kilian are still the two most likely to pick up a save though if Walker has fixed his issues the door might be open to return to the 9th. Crazier things have happened.
