Bullpen Notes🗒️(8/3)

WSN: They didn't have all their new pieces so tonight looked just like most nights this year. Tom Cosgrove came on against the bottom of the order in the 7th with one on, two out, and a 3-0 lead. He walked a batter and gave up a grand slam. He would get the next two out but he took the loss and blown save as they went down 4-3. Clayton Beeter started the 8th against the meat of the lineup and he walked Schwarber and allowed a homer to Harper. He got an out and Eddy Yean got the last two of the inning. This is the fear with Beeter going forward. They use him in the biggest spots and while they did add bullpen guys none are as good or have as much experience as Beeter. To me on the adds Cruz has the best chance of getting saves though I not confident that he replaces Beeter. This seems like a committee as it has been all year.

PHI: They haven't gotten all their news toys yet in the bullpen so we saw the remaining guys. Backhus had the 7th with the team down and picked up the win. Kerkering had the 8th with the lead and picked up a hold pitching a perfect inning with a couple strikeouts. Jhoan Duran had no problem in the 9th pitching a perfect inning and getting a save. Duran is the closer but we should see somewhat of a shakeup late with Raley and Kilian here. Kerkering's holds value probably takes a hit.

NYY: They got down big and used some of the lesser guys. They did come back to take a 7-6 lead in the 7th. Ryan Yarbrough who had gotten out of the 7th pitched to one batter in the 8th allowing a triple. Angel Chivilli who has been good was brought in and he got mauled. He would get three outs but not before allowing 7 runs (1 of Yarbroughs) and more troubling was three homers. Fernando Cruz finished the game pitching the 9th. They didn't bring in any bullpen help so Chivilli was expected to take on a bigger role. Bullpen wise they are one of the losers of the deadline as they go forward with a lot of guys who have pitched well but are pretty unproven under the pressures of a playoff hunt or postseason. Bednar is the one stud and he is the closer.

STL: They had a 6-0 lead and did their best to blow the game. Ryne Stanek started the 7th with a 6-3 lead and gave up a couple solo homers to make it 6-5. He would get an out and allow a double before getting pulled for George Soriano. He got an out and allowed a two run dong that put them down 7-6. Stanek picked up a hold and Soriano was charged with a blown save. Gordon Graceffo pitched the final two innings and picked up the win after they rallied with 7 runs in the 8th. They traded Romero who was on the IL but the rest of the bullpen remained the same. ROB is the closer and Soriano is the 8th inning man so he can be dropped if you were looking for prospective saves.

PIT: Gregory Soto got the final out of the 6th after hitting a batter. He returned for the 7th and put a couple guys on but ended up picking up a hold as he protected the 4-3 lead. They turned to Camilo Doval who pitched a perfect 8th inning against the mid part of the lineup. He has the talent to pitch in big innings and he picked up a hold. Mason Montgomery pitched the 9th picking up a save. He had a perfect inning and could still be in the mix here. They had a big deadline adding Weaver and Yates plus the moves they already made. Weaver isn't a closer but he should be their best reliever. Hopefully we get some clarity with them naming a closer but we could end up in a committee. I would add Weaver everywhere as he has the highest upside.

SFG: Complete bullpen makeover. They got rid of the top two men in Kilian and Miller. Winn got a couple outs in the 7th and Hentges finished it and pitched the 8th. Both guys picked up holds. They had a 5-0 lead in the 9th and used Tristan Beck who allowed a homer and walk before getting pulled for Reiver Sanmartin who got a double play to end it. I think Dylan Smith gets the first shot a saves and maybe Jason Foley is in the mix as well. We can rule out Winn and Hentges for now.

LAD: Edgardo Henriquez got two outs in the 5th and returned for the 6th. They were down 7-5 and he loaded the bases before they turned to Tanner Scott. He allowed all three of Henriquez's runs to score walking a batter in and allowing a single. Scott is going to end up being a pre 9th fireman but he should pickup plenty of holds.

TOR: They took out the Hoffman trash and sent it to MIN. With him out of the 7th/8th innings and Varland off today the bullpen got the job done. Braydon Fisher got an out in the 6th and a couple in the 7th while allowing a bunch of base runners. Brendon Little who has been awful so far this year got out of the 7th and pitched a pretty good 8th allowing one walk. Both guys picked up holds but I wouldn't jump to roster either. Tyler Rogers pitched a perfect 9th and picked up the save. He is still the 8th inning man here and should pick up holds while Varland gets the saves when both are available.

ARI: Juan Morillo picked up a hold getting an out in the 7th and pitching the 8th. They took a 5-1 lead and still used Brandyn Garcia in the 9th. The job is Garcia's despite them not adding a lefty. He should be added everywhere.
