Bullpen Notes🗒️(8/1)
TOR: Braydon Fisher got out of the 6th and got two outs in the 7th before allowing a single. Mason Fluharty came on to face the LHB who he walked but got the next guy out. They both picked up holds. With a 5-1 lead Jeff Hoffman pitched the 8th and put a couple on and Tyler Rogers pitched the 9th with no issue. They are only four games back so maybe they don't sell. They did make it to the World Series last year but in the bullpen Hoffman and Rogers are the guys who would go.
CWS: Jordan Hicks started and pitched a scoreless first. Seranthony Domínguez pitched a scoreless 7th. Trevor Richards pitched a scoreless 8th. They lost 1-0. As much as we might want to say Hicks is in the mix for saves he isn't. His only save of the season was in March. Don't let people trick you into adding him. Taylor is the main option and Hudson and Newcomb are in the mix. A righty add to the bullpen could change things. They traded Seranthony Domínguez after the game so celebrate Chicago fans.
TBR: Cam Booser got a couple outs in the 7th while allowing a hit. Kevin Kelly got out of the 7th and got two outs in the 8th. Garrett Cleavinger came on to face the LHB and got out of the 8th. All three guys picked up holds. Bryan Baker had the 9th and he was perfect. His velo was down a couple miles per hour which is concerning but hopefully it is nothing major. If the bullpen loses Baker is could be over here. They should be in the market to add arms at the deadline.
MIA: John King pitched a perfect 6th. Lake Bachar pitched the 7th, 8th, and 9th with a 6-2 lead. He qualified for the save since he had pitched three innings. Nice outing for Lake and he has had another nice year. Fairbanks is the closer and Pedersen is the best option for holds. I doubt they sell and they might even add to the bullpen.
MIN: Travis Adams and A.J. Minter got the final two outs of the 6th with Adams allowing a couple to reach. They were down at the time so no holds. With the score tied at 3-3 in the 7th they used Tommy Nance and Kody Funderburk to get through the inning with Nance walking a guy. Taylor Rogers battled through the 8th allowing a couple base runners but keeping the game tied. Andrew Morris who was pitching for the third day in a row allowed a run in the 9th and took the loss. He had given up a leadoff double and that was too much to overcome. They have proven they are willing to add but I get the feeling the bullpen will stay as is with Gomez as the closer and Morris in the 8th.
SEA: Gabe Speier started the 8th with the game tied at 3-3 and he got two outs while allowing a couple runners to reach base. They used Andrés Muñoz to get the last out of the 8th and he returned for the 9th. He allowed a single but a double play on a strikeout ended the inning. He was credited with the win. They need bullpen help and this win was huge since they have been falling out of the race. Seems like they will still add at the deadline. After the game they added Seranthony Domínguez and while it isn't much he should provide some depth to the bullpen.
PIT: Carmen Mlodzinski handled the middle of the game pitching the 6th, 7th and 8th and picking up a hold. He allowed the lead off runners to reach in both the 6th and 7th but managed to get through the innings. In the 9th the turned to old closer Gregory Soto with Monty having pitched back to back days. Soto faced the second half of the lineup and was perfect picking up the save. They acquired Doval earlier in the day and he becomes the best righty they have. The closers spot is still split between Monty and Soto and hopefully there will be one move big bullpen move. Doval could be in the mix if he pitches well as the only righty.
BAL: Rico Garcia got two outs to get out of the 7th with the team down 1-0. Grant Wolfram started the 7th against the top of the order and walked two of the three hitters he faced. Andrew Kittredge came on and allowed a couple singles that scored both Wolfram runs and he allowed a couple more guys to reach and score runs that where charged to him. Yaramil Hiraldo finished the 8th and the game but the 5-0 deficit was too much overcome.
PHI: Jonathan Bowlan pitched the 7th with a 1-0 lead and picked up a hold. He struck out three and allowed a single. José Alvarado pitched a perfect 8th and Jhoan Duran pitched a perfect 9th. If Kerkering keeps struggling this is what the bullpen could look like. Lets hope they make a move.
TEX: Big game but they got down early and used a bunch of bullpen guys. They all pitched pretty well. Winn was first in, followed by Alexander, followed by Gray, and Silseth finished it off. Silseth loaded the bases but was able to get out of the inning and keep the score 5-4. They need help to be a real contender.
HOU: Sousa came on in the 5th with a runner on and walked the bases loaded before getting a strikeout to end the inning. De Los Santos pitched in the 6th with a 5-3 lead and gave up a solo dong but picked up a hold. Steven Okert got the final out of the 6th and pitched the 7th picking up a win. Bryan Abreu was perfect in the 8th and he appears to be back into a high leverage role. Him and Okert both have value as holds guys. Josh Hader pitched a perfect 9th picking up a save. They no longer need a high leverage righty and they might not even need much for bullpen help with Abreu returning to form.
CLE: This was a terrible day for the bullpen. Colin Holderman allowed an inherited runner to score in the 5th and loaded the bases in the 6th but didn't allow a run. He was the only member of the bullpen who didn't. With a 2-2 score Hunter Gaddis started the 7th and allowed a solo homer to put them down 3-2. He would end up getting two outs but letting three more reach all of which would score eventually. Franco Aleman came in and allowed a double that scored a couple, hit a batter, and allowed a three run dong. He was charged with three runs. Gaddis was charged with four and picked up a loss. They did rally to get to 10-7 in the 9th but Herrin allowed a couple more to make it 12-7. The bullpen which had been dominant is struggling now. They did add Craig Yoho from MIL so maybe he can proved some depth.
ARI: With a 2-2 score in the 5th they turned to Gerardo Carrillo and he pitched that inning plus the 6th allowing just a single. He would end up picking up the win. They blew the game open in the top of the 7th and used Juan Morillo with a 9-2 lead and he pitched a perfect bottom of the inning. With a 10-2 lead they tried to get Paul Sewald a work inning in and it was a disaster. After allowing a lead off homer he let the remaining four guys he faced reach base. Kevin Ginkel came on and got out of the inning but allowed three Sewald runners to score. Sewald ended up being charged with five runs and no outs. Jonathan Loáisiga did pitch the 9th up five and allowed a run. Sewald should be heading to the IL or the free agent pool. Maybe they try to trade him. Garcia is the closer here and Ginkel seems to be the 8th inning man. Morillo and Loáisiga appear to be left to fight for the scraps in the 7th inning or other big spots.
NYY: Angel Chivilli was the first man in with one out in the 6th and a 1-1 score. He walked a couple but got out of the inning. They had taken a 2-1 lead and brought in Fernando Cruz who allowed a lead off dong, got a couple outs, and allowed a walk before being pulled for Brent Headrick. Brent allowed a triple that put them down 3-2 and a single that scored another run though the guy was thrown out at second. Ugly outing for both guys and Cruz was charged with a blown save and a loss. Newly called up Yovanny Cruz pitched the 8th and allowed a run to make it 5-2. They traded Doval and I still think they will add another arm to a bullpen that has been great with relatively unproven guys.
CHC: With the team down 2-1 Trent Thornton got two outs to end the 7th and he picked up the win. He put three guys on while doing it. Annoyingly they used Jacob Webb in the 8th against the middle of the lineup and he allowed the lead off man to reach but got a hold. Caleb Thielbar pitched the 9th and allowed a lead off single but got a double play while picking up the save. He faced the bottom of the order and was protecting a three run lead so it wasn't the toughest of outings. Webb remains the best option for saves though he will always pitch against the best part of the lineup late in the game. They could use some help at the deadline which might change some roles.
KCR: The bullpen guys continue to suck in their auditions for trades. They are in COL but still it wasn't a good day for them. Matt Strahm pitched the 5th and allowed a run, Alex Lange pitched the 6th and 7th and allowed a run, and Lucas Erceg pitched the 8th and allowed three runs. Lynch and Cruz are the two reliable relievers here and I would say that Cruz is the guy to add for saves.
SFG: Keaton Winn threw two pitches in the 6th allowing a single that scored a run but the batter was thrown out trying to stretch it. He returned for the 7th with the team still down 5-3. They did rally in the 8th and used Caleb Kilian in the bottom of the inning. He allowed a hit but the guy was thrown out trying to steal. Dylan Smith had the 9th with the game still tied at 5-5 and allowed a lead off double that would come around to score. He picked up the loss. Miller is the closer here and we wait to see what the bullpen looks like after the deadline. I doubt they move much since they really don't have anyone that good.
SDP: Wandy Peralta got a couple outs in the 5th and a couple outs in the 6th. Adrian Morejon got the final out of the 6th and pitched a perfect 7th picking up the hold. Jeremiah Estrada pitched the 8th with a 5-3 lead and let the first three reach before getting an out and being pulled for Mason Miller. Miller struck a guy out but gave up a double that plated two Estrada runs and tied the game. Miller finished the 8th and pitched the 9th. He picked up a win and was charged with a blown save while Estrada picked up a hold. Hopefully this is rust for Estrada but we have seen this story before this season. They are buying so all of these guys should remain and Miller is the closer.
BOS: Justin Slaten pitched a perfect 7th with the game tied and picked up a win. Tyron Guerrero pitched the 8th and allowed a one out single but picked up a hold as the game was now 3-2. Aroldis Chapman pitched the 9th and was perfect picking up another save. Interesting that we didn't see Whitlock but all of these guys have been pitching a lot so maybe they just wanted to give him a extra day. Keep an eye on it. If anything is wrong Slaten and Guerrero get the bump up in leverage. Chapman is one of the best in the game.
LAA: This turned into a bullpen game after the starter was scratched. Brent Suter and Brett Kerry got though the first six innings with Kerry allowing one run. Samy Natera Jr. pitched a perfect 7th with the game tied 1-1. He returned for the 8th and allowed a one out double and single that plated a run. He would end up taking the loss. Kirby Yates pitched the 9th and got a couple quick outs before a walk, stolen base, and single that scored a run to make it 3-1. Natera has been great all year and could benefit if they trade bullpen guys. For now Zef remains the best option for saves with Bachman and Yates somewhat in the mix and Joyce's return looming.
MIL: Chad Patrick picked up the win pitching the 6th and 7th and allowing just a hit in the 7th. With a 2-1 lead they turned to Uribe who was perfect in the 8th picking up hold. Megill had the 9th with a 3-1 lead and was also perfect picking up the save. They have a great back end of the bullpen but could be in the market for mid leverage help. They did add Codi Heuer for Craig Yoho earlier in the day which might provide some help. Heuer was pitching in triple AAA. Well see what happens over the next couple days but Megill will remain the closer.
DET: They traded Skubel mid game and things almost fell apart. With an 8-2 lead in the 8th Kyle Finnegan allowed a three run homer which was literally just after the trade. He walked another guy and they turned to Jacob Waguespack who allowed a hit but got the final out. With a 8-5 lead in the 9th Kenley Jansen came on and allowed a lead off double. That run would come around to score when Jeff McNeil bunted the runner in with two outs. Kenley would get the final out on a flyball and went right after that bitch McNeil causing the benches to empty. It's baseball so nothing else happened. This team is still in it so it will be interesting to see if they sell off some of the bullpen pieces or ride with what they have. Kenley is the closer and he is approaching 500 saves.
