Bullpen Notes🗒️(7/30)

TEX: The big news of the day here was Jakob Junis hitting the IL again. He was the second most reliable man in the bullpen and a true veteran. It was a bullpen game and they started it with Cole Winn. Marco Gonzales pitched three innings allowing one run. Peyton Gray pitched the 5th and returned to for the 6th. He allowed a solo homer that tied the game at 2-2 and he was charged with a blown save. Robby Ahlstrom got the next four outs without issue. Ben Peoples got another out in the 8th but allowed a solo homer that put them down 3-2. He gave up another hit and got out of the inning. They need another arm even with the accusation of Silseth. Latz is the only guy worth rostering right now in the bullpen.

TBR: They used most of the bullpen after the starter went three innings. Legumina, Booser, Kimbrel, and Matz got the game to the 8th with Kimbrel allowing a Booser run to score. With a 2-2 score in the 8th Garrett Cleavinger came on and allowed a walk but got a couple strikeouts while picking up the win. Bryan Baker pitched the 9th and allowed a couple walks but also struck a couple out to pick up the save. He is now tied for the league lead in saves and is one of the best in the game. Cleavinger remains my pick for holds and they could add a bullpen arm.

KCR: Another meltdown in the 9th cost them the win. They went back to old friend Lucas Erceg with a 3-0 lead. He got the first two guys out and then hat a batter, gave up a hit, and walked a batter to load the bases. With the lefty Clemens coming up they pulled him and put in Matt Strahm. He got the count to 0-2 and allowed a grand slam that ended the game. Pretty gross showing for a couple guys who have proven to be unreliable since mid May. Cruz had pitched back to back days and they didn't use Lange so that would indicate he is out for now. I would add Cruz everywhere as he should be the man to see the next save chance.

MIN: They used Taylor Rogers in the 7th, Andrew Morris in the 8th, and Yoendrys Gomez in the 9th while down 3-0. They all allowed guys to reach base but got out of each inning without allowing a run. Gomez ended up picking up the win after they walked it off in the bottom of the 9th. Morris and Gomez are the holds and saves option. They traded for AJ Minter after the game and he fills the role of high leverage lefty that they have needed. I would expect this means Gomez stays put unless they are really blown away by something.

NYY: 0-0 game until the 10th. They used Brent Headrick in the 8th and he allowed a walk. Angel Chivilli pitched the 9th and in the 10th and allowed the ghost runner to score on a single. He wasn't charged with a blown save due to pitching in the 9th. Fernando Cruz got a double play to end the 10th and returned for the 11th where he loaded the bases and walked in the game ending run with two outs. Cruz and this team have not been good in extra innings. They do have a lot of good relievers and a stud closer in Bednar. Headrick might be moving ahead of Cruz in the late innings but I would still favor Cruz for holds.

CWS: Sean Newcomb pitched a scoreless 7th and 8th. Bryan Hudson pitched a scoreless 9th. Chris Murphy allowed the ghost runner to score in the 10th on a single. He did get out of the inning. Seranthony Domínguez pitched the 11th and picked up the win after somehow preventing the ghost runner from scoring. Still a committee here with Taylor being the best option but pitching in the biggest spots which occur outside the 9th at times. Newcomb and Hudson seem to be the next two in line.

STL: Pretty much the same set up as yesterday. George Soriano pitched in the 7th and allowed an inherited runner to score that put them down 2-1. Ryne Stanek pitched the 8th after they tied it and Riley O'Brien pitched the 9th. Neither guy had much trouble with Stanek allowing a hit. Luis Gastelum had the 10th and he gave up back to back doubles that scored the ghost runner and one of his own to put them down 4-2. He was charged with a loss. We just wait to see what they will do at the deadline because it appears they have fallen into the sellers group which means Stanek should go and possible Romero or ROB as well. Soriano would close if ROB is traded.

CHC: Rolison got the game to the 7th and they used Caleb Thielbar. He allowed a one out homer that tied the game at 2-2. Gavin Hollowell pitched the 8th and kept the game tied. Jacob Webb allowed an infield single in the 9th and returned to get an out in the 10th while picking up the win. Aaron Civale got the final two outs of the 10th and picked up the save. Webb is the closer here and they could use bullpen help so we will see what level of pitcher they get and if that would alter his role as closer.

ATL: Danny Young got an out in the 5th and a couple in the 6th. Victor Mederos got out of the 6th and allowed a run in the 7th that made the score 5-4. He picked up the win for his effort. Dylan Lee got out of the 7th with a guy on third and pitched a perfect 8th picking up a hold. Raisel Iglesias had the 9th and walked a guy but picked up the save. The bullpen is strong but they could use another mid to high leverage righty if they make a move.

PIT: Bullpen game here though a couple of the guys they just called up did the bulk of the work. Yohan Ramirez started and also pitched the second. Hunter Barco gave up a couple of runs in the third. Mason Montgomery had a seven pitch 8th with the game tied at 2-2 against the bottom of the order. Gregory Soto pitched the 9th against the top of the order and he struggled loading the bases before giving up the game ending run on a grounder up the middle. Once again just when it seems like Monty has the edge they switch it up and let Soto pitch the more important inning. I would still roster Monty but they should be adding to the bullpen over the next couple days.

CIN: The bullpen was deployed with the game tied 2-2 in the 7th. Brock Burke walked a couple and hit a batter in the 7th but got out of the inning. Tejay Antone pitched the 8th allowing a double. Emilio Pagán struck out three and allowed a two out single in the 9th. He would pick up the win when they won in the bottom of the 9th. This seems to be the preferred order in the leverage innings and they are a team to keep an eye on to see if any of these guys are on the move.

MIA: With the game tied at 2-2 in the 7th Lake Bachar pitched a perfect inning. Michael Petersen had the 8th making his first appearance since being hit with that come backer. He got a couple quick outs but allowed three hits that scored two runs. He left with the team down 4-2 and picked up the loss. John King got the final out of the inning. They need to win otherwise they could fall back into the sellers range. I really don't think they will do much with their bullpen. Small chance Fairbanks gets moved but he hasn't been very good so we'll see.

NYM: Brooks Raley got two outs in the 7th and pitched the 8th. He picked up the win and each appearance he makes could be his last with the team. Devin Williams walked the leadoff guy in the 9th but got the next three and picked up the save. We continue to wait and see who is left here and if Williams remains he will continue to close games.

ATH: Scott Blewett struggled a bit in the 6th but pitched a perfect 7th with a 4-3 lead. As expected Luis Medina had the 8th and he allowed a back to back homers to start the inning and put them down 5-4. He was charged with a loss and a blown save. Elvis Alvarado got the final three outs in the 9th. Harris is the closer here and the only reliable arm in the bullpen. Medina and Alvarado are mirror images of each other struggling in big situations despite throwing hard.

BOS: Greg Weissert pitched the 8th allowing a hit but getting a double play to pick up a hold. Aroldis Chapman pitched the 9th and allowed a double that the radio announcers thought was gone. He struck out the next two batters to end the game. He continues to be one of the best closers in the game. They didn't use Whitlock or Slaten today but still had enough to get the job done.

SFG: This is looking like how the bullpen will setup with a lead late. In the 7th they used Caleb Kilian who walked a guy but picked up a hold. Kilain, Winn and Hentges seem like the options for the 7th depending on matchup. Dylan Smith had the 8th and allowed a two out single but picked up a hold. He seems like the best option for the 8th and that makes him the holds guy on the team. Erik Miller pitched the 9th and also allowed a two out single while picking up the save. I don't think there is any question he is the closer here and while I don't think they would trade him I suppose they could be blown away by an offer. ADD HIM.

LAD: Jack Dreyer got four outs in the 6th and 7th picking up a hold. Edgardo Henriquez got the final out of the 7th despite putting a couple guys of his own on. New 8th inning man Tanner Scott let a couple on but didn't allow a run with a 6-2 lead. Edwin Díaz pitched the 9th on back to back nights allowing just a single. It was a four run lead so he didn't get credited with a save. This is how the bullpen will look with Diaz in the 9th and Scott in the 8th. The rest of the guys will battle for the 7th based on matchup and availability.
