Bullpen Notes🗒️(7/28)
CLE: The bullpen was huge in game one. Tim Herrin was the first man in pitching in the 4th inning. There was a runner on first and he allowed a hit and a two run single with one run charged to him. Franco Aleman pitched the next two innings with no issue. With the score 5-5 the used Colin Holderman in the 7th and he picked up a win. Hunter Gaddis pitched the 8th allowing a couple singles but getting out of trouble to pick up a hold. They had a 6-5 lead at the time and in the 9th Cade Smith allowed a two out walk and picked up a save. They were down all of game two and Daniel Espino was the only reliever to pitch. Erik Sabrowski is pretty much out of big spots but Holderman and Gaddis have filled the void very well. Smith is as good as it gets in the 9th and if they do anything I would expect them to try and add a lefty.
CIN: In game one with the score 5-5 they used Brock Burke and Pierce Johnson to get through the 6th and 7th. They went with Sam Moll in the 8th against the middle of the lineup and allowed a couple hits and a sac fly that scored a run. He would eventually get out of the inning but he took the loss. Chase Petty pitched the 9th with the team down 6-5. In game two they pretty much went with a bullpen game. Caleb Ferguson and Julian Garcia got though the first three innings without allowing a run. They used a bulk guy to get into the 7th. Tejay Antone came on with two outs in the 7th and walked a guy but got the final out. He hit a guy in the 8th but picked up the hold. Emilio Pagán had the 9th and he allowed a one out single but the center fielder made a tremendous catch to end the game. The ball wouldn't have gotten out but it would have scored a run. Pagán has been pretty good in the 9th but he could be on the move. Antone seems like he'll remain with the team and he would probably take over but as we saw earlier in the year it might not lead to a lot of saves.
PIT: They were down for most of the bullpen innings prior to the 10th. Isaac Mattson, Brandon Eisert, and Ron Marinaccio got them from 5th through the 9th with only Mattson allowing a run. There wasn't a lot of pressure for any of these innings. Gregory Soto allowed a run in the 10th but it was the ghost runner. There was an error so he actually did a good job of limiting the damage. Wilber Dotel got through the 11th but allowed the ghost runner to score in the 12th and he wound up taking the loss. Monty and Soto are the guys to roster for saves and Monty should have the advantage.
ARI: Ryan Thompson started the 8th with a 6-0 lead. He allowed four hits, a walk, and three runs before getting pulled for Brandyn Garcia who got the final out and picked up a hold. Paul Sewald started the 9th and he allowed a double and back to back homers that tied the game. He did get an out after that but he was charged with a blown save. Juan Morillo got the last two outs of the inning while allowing a double. They took a 7-6 lead in the 10th but Kevin Ginkel allowed the ghost runner to score and was charged with a blown save. Gerardo Carrillo pitched a perfect 11th and 12th and ended up picking up a win. He was very good and kept the ghost runner from scoring in both innings. Sewald should remain the closer here but they cant afford to lose games so his leash might be shorter than you think. Ginkel and Morillo are the guys to watch if they remove Sewald and my pick is Morillo.
MIA: Sandy started so the bullpen got a nice break prior to the 8th. Calvin Faucher was the guy they went with so I am guessing Petersen is still feeling the effects of that liner. Faucher was perfect and picked up a hold. Pete Fairbanks pitched a perfect 9th and had a couple strikeouts to pick up the save. They are back to .500 and still firmly in the race. Hard to tell what they will do but it seems like they wont be making a major move related to the bullpen.
PHI: It was a 1-0 game in the 7th and 8th and they used José Alvarado and Orion Kerkering. Those two seem to be the preferred guys for those innings with Bowlan in the mix as well. We are just waiting to see if they make a move to help the bullpen.
TEX: Peyton Gray got two outs in the 6th but allowed an inherited runner to score. He picked up a hold and the game was 2-1. Tyler Alexander pitched a perfect 7th and let a guy on in the 8th while picking up a hold. Jakob Junis allowed another runner to reach but got out of the 8th inning picking up a hold as well. With a 4-1 lead in the 9th Jacob Latz was brought in and he converted the save. Latz and Junis are pretty solid but adding another higher leverage guy would go a long way for the stretch run.
WSN: They had an 8-3 lead and went with Tom Cosgrove in the 7th and he had no issue. In the 8th freshly called up Gus Varland faced three batters and all three scored. One was on due to an error but his time in the minors doesn't seem to have helped him. Orlando Ribalta came on with the game now 8-6 and picked up a hold. Clayton Beeter pitched a perfect 9th and picked up the save. Beeter has been getting the 9th recently so this is a big deal. Not sure how long it lasts with guys like Varland still pitching in front of him but if you are looking for saves he is the guy to roster.
KCR: Daniel Lynch started the 7th with a 2-1 lead and got two outs but allowed a runner to reach second. John Schreiber walked a guy but got the final out of the inning and both guys picked up a hold. Steven Cruz allowed a lead off single in the 8th but got a double that helped get him out of the inning. He picked up a hold. Alex Lange pitched the 9th with the same 2-1 lead and he put two on while getting two outs. After that he gave up a triple that ended the game. He was charged with a blown save and a loss. At this rate Lange might not be traded and he also might just lose the job. It has been an ugly two weeks. I think Cruz will get the next chance and it is very likely if he converts he will remain in the role until he blows one. I think Lange is out for now.
NYY: They had used everyone yesterday but the bullpen needed to get nine outs today. With a 3-0 lead Angel Chivilli was the first man in for the 7th and he pitched a perfect inning picking up a hold. Brent Headrick pitched the 8th allowing a two out single and picked up a hold. David Bednar had the 9th with the team still up 3-0 and he let a guy on, got two outs, and allowed a two run homer. He struck out the next batter to pick up the save but it did end his 21 consecutive scoreless appearance streak. Bednar is the closer here but Cruz might be out of the 8th inning. They have a bunch of options who have pitched well but Headrick is worth a look. To me it seems like this will just lead to no one being the 8th inning guy which is not ideal for holds in fantasy. Chivilli has been really good as well.
LAA: Fermin was the first in pitching in the 6th with the game 2-2. He allowed a couple to reach but got a couple outs. Brent Suter came in and got out a LHB to end the inning. Kirby Yates got the first two outs in the 7th but was pulled after a single. Samy Natera Jr. came on to face Alvarez the lefty who he walked but he got the next guy out. He also pitched the 8th with no issue. With the game still tied at 2-2 they went with Mitch Farris in the 9th. Bachman, Zef, and Silseth had all pitched back to back so this move made sense. Farris struggled as expected and Yordon knocked in the winning run with a single. No shame in getting beat by the best but you have to keep the 7 and 9 hitters off the bases. Zef is the guy who should close here but they have been using him in big spots which lets others see chances.
HOU: The bullpen was just better than the Angels today and that is why they won. Enyel De Los Santos, Bryan Abreu, and Steven Okert got through the 6th, 7th, and 8th. Okert was the only one to allow a base runner when he hit a batter. He also picked up the win. In the 9th they used Hader and he had a perfect inning. Another save for him and they could use some right handed help in the bullpen but that is really all I would expect them to look for.
COL: Ugly bullpen game here though errors did hurt them. Three guys were charged with blown saves. Juan Mejia allowed an inherited runner to score in the 5th and walked a couple guys in the 6th before being pulled. Antonio Senzatela let Mejia's runers score in the 6th and was charged with a blown save. He returned for the 7th and put two guys on both of which would come around to score. Brennan Bernardino allowed the two runs to score but an error made one of them unearned. Bernie was charged with a blown save. Victor Vodnik started the 8th and allowed a couple hits. One of them scored a run when the fielder botched it and that run was unearned but he was charged with a blown save. For whatever reason they went to Jimmy Herget in the 9th and he didn't get an out while allowing a run. He has been awful the last few weeks. No Romano tonight be he is the only guy I would even consider rostering here as he is the closer.
SDP: Somewhat of a struggle tonight for the guys not named Mason Miller. Bradgley Rodriguez allowing a couple runs to score in the 7th and put them down 6-4. He doesn't seem ready to pitch in big spots. Adrian Morejon battled through the 8th and walked a run in that put them down 7-6. He has also struggled recently but his run was unearned due to an error. Mason Miller struck out the side in the 9th with the game tied and picked up a win. I really don't see him going anywhere and he remains the best closer in the game.
ATH: Luis Medina took the hill in the 7th with a 1-0 lead. He allowed a lead off single but got out of the inning. He returned for the 8th with a 3-0 lead and let three guys on but a double play saved him. They pulled him for Hogan Harris to face a lefty and he let one of his runs in on a single. Medina picked up a hold. Harris returned for the 9th with a 4-1 lead. He allowed a two run homer and the last out was to the warning track but it ended the game and he picked up the save. Harris is the closer and I wouldn't trust Medina or Alvarado late in the games. Harris seems to be the only guy drawing much trade interest so that is his biggest threat to losing the job.
SFG: They got mauled but anywhere you see JT Brubaker listed as a potential closer is wrong. He worked three innings in the middle of the game. He is a low leverage bulk guy and has virtually no fantasy value. I think Eric Miller is the closer here so go add him if you need saves.
LAD: Brock Stewart pitched a perfect 7th with the game tied 5-5. He returned for the 8th getting an out and allowing a single before being pulled for Alex Vesia. Veisa allowed a homer to the first batter he faced who was a LHB and the reason he was in the game. Stewart took the loss and Dreyer pitched the 9th with the team down 7-5.
SEA: Nice night for the bullpen until some drama in the 9th. Gabe Speier was perfect in the 6th. Jose A. Ferrer was perfect in the 7th against the middle of the order and picked up a win. Eduard Bazardo was perfect in the 8th and picked up a hold. Andrés Muñoz pitched the 9th and allowed a lead off single followed by a double that scored a run and made it 7-6. Ohtani ended up on third with no outs after an error. Muñoz did buckle down getting the next two before walking a guy and getting Mookie to ground out to short. This was Muñoz's first struggle in a while but he got the job done and he remains the closer. Bazardo remains the best option for holds.
