Bullpen Notes🗒️(7/26)

TBR: Garrett Cleavinger pitched the 8th and picked up a hold. In the 9th Bryan Baker walked a guy with two outs and picked up the save. I cant say enough about Baker as he has become one of the top closers in the league. He has grown into the 9th inning and Cleavinger remains my pick for holds on the team.

ARI: Ugly day for the bullpen with some of the main guys being used with the team down. Jonathan Loáisiga was in for the 5th with the game tied and allowed a two run homer. He really hasn't been used late in games and probably isn't worth rostering. Ryan Thompson and Brandyn Garcia got through the 6th and Garcia returned for the 7th. He got rocked allowing three runs while getting two outs. It is really one of his first bad outings and he is a guy I would target for holds. Kevin Ginkel got the last out of the 7th and allowed a solo homer in the 8th that made the score 10-5. He is another guy I like but one that could be on the move. If Ginkel goes Morillo should take over most of his late innings. Sewald is the closer and we wait to see if they sell or buy at the deadline.

WSN: Their bullpen got through the game and managed to hold the lead. Riley Cornelio pitched the 5th and 6th allowing a run but picking up a win. Max Kranick got a hold pitching the 7th. Tom Cosgrove allowed a run in the 8th. Matt Krook started the 9th with a 10-5 lead, against the top of the order, and walked the bases loaded before getting pulled for Clayton Beeter. Beeter allowed a couple runs that were charged to Krook but did get out of the inning picking up a save. I have no idea why they keep using Krook late but the bullpen is not good. A major trade seems unlikely but maybe they will bring in a flyer or two that have a couple years left. If not Beeter remains the best option for saves.

BAL: They were down for all the bullpen innings prior to the 10th. The bullpen didn't allow any runs in that period. I would keep an eye on Anthony Nunez if they end up moving guys. He could have some value with how bad Rico Garcia has been. Tyler Wells pitched the 10th walking a batter but kept the ghost runner from scoring. Andrew Kittredge took the 11th and allowed a lead off double that scored the ghost runner and ended up being the game ending run. Another tough luck loss for Kitty as he always seems to pitch in these situation. Wells is the closer and we wait to see who stays and who goes.

ATL: They had a lead for the bullpen innings. Dylan Dodd got the last out of the 6th and pitched the 7th picking up a hold. Dylan Lee had the 8th and allowed a solo homer that made it 2-1 but he did pick up a hold. Raisel Iglesias pitched the 9th and was charged with a blown save. He got burned on a grounder that went through Albies legs. It would have been the second out or even a double play but instead they ended up with runners on first and third with one out. The next batter hit another ball to Albies and he made a great diving play but just got one out at first. Young allowed a couple to reach in the 10th and Kinley got out of the inning. Kinley picked up the win pitching the 11th and he didn't allow a run. I'm not worried about Iggy in the 9th but Lee has struggled in the 8th. He is still the best option for holds. Dodd has been very good for most of the year.

PIT: Carmen Mlodzinski started the 7th with a 8-4 lead. he got through the 7th but in the 8th he allowed the first three to reach and one of them scored. He did get out of that inning as well. Mason Montgomery came on for the 9th and allowed a two run homer with one out to make it 8-7. He got the next two guys though and it was his inning the whole time. It seems like he is the best option for saves here but I doubt he lasts. Soto could still see chances and they should be in the market to upgrade the bullpen.

BOS: Greg Weissert pitched the 5th and picked up a win. Tyron Guerrero had the 6th and put a couple on but picked up a hold. Justin Slaten pitched the 7th without issue and picked up a hold. They opened up the game after that and Ryan Watson pitched the last two innings allowing a run. They didn't use the Whitlock and Chapman and who you saw today are the next up for holds. Slaten is pretty solid if you need someone.

DET: They had a 4-3 lead for the start of the bullpen innings. Ty Madden pitched the 6th and got two outs in the 7th picking up a hold. Drew Sommers got the final out of the 7th and returned for the 8th. He got a couple outs but gave up a single and homer that put them down 5-4. He was charged with a blown save and a loss. Brenan Hanifee pitched the 9th. I'm assuming Holton and Finnegan were not available as the reason Sommers was pitching so much of the 8th. They could have used Anderson as well. Tough loss for the bullpen.

KCR: Matt Strahm pitched in the 5th and got burned by an error. He allowed an unearned run of his own and the starter was charged with one as well. Lucas Erceg pitched the 6th without issue. Newly acquired Nate Pearson pitched the 7th and picked up the win. John Schreiber walked a batter in the but got a hold in the 8th. Steven Cruz was the man in the 9th and he allowed the first two to reach but locked in and picked up the save. Lange had only thrown 16 pitches yesterday so this is somewhat of a surprise. I assume Lange remains the closer here if he isn't traded but there is no question that Cruz is next in line.

NYM: They used the main three guys in this one even after they opened up the lead. Brooks Raley got a hold pitching in the 7th. They used Weaver and Williams for the 8th and 9th even though they had a 8-3 lead. We are just waiting to see who remains here after the deadline. Weaver and Raley should be gone but we will see about Williams.

MIA: Michael Petersen was the first in with two outs in the 5th. He got hit with a line drive but got out of the inning. They were up 3-1 at the time but he did not record a hold. X-rays were negative so now we wait to see if he goes on the IL. Cade Gibson pitched a perfect 6th and Tyler Zuber was perfect in the 7th with both guys picking up holds. Lake Bachar had the 8th and quickly gave up a two run homer. He allowed another homer and a run scoring single that made it a 5-3 game before getting out of the inning. He took a loss and was charged with a blown save. Pete Fairbanks was perfect in the 9th but it didn't matter as they have lost 12 in a row. Despite the losing streak they are still in the playoff race so we cant be sure they are sellers yet.

SDP: Yuki Matsui got the final two outs of the 6th. Wandy Peralta pitched the 7th and picked up the win. Adrian Morejon hit a batter in the 8th and picked up a hold. Mason Miller was perfect in the 9th. That is now 27 saves for him. If they don't sell this is a very good bullpen. I don't think Miller goes but Morejon is the big question. Matsui could see a bump up in leverage and Bradgley Rodriguez should as well.

MIN: Cole Sands was activated and pitched. It was not pretty as he hit a batter in the 6th before allowing a three run homer. That made the score 7-3 and he returned for the 7th allowing three runners to reach before being pulled. Tommy Nance let two of those runners score so while picking up a hold. Kody Funderburk pitched the 8th and picked up a hold as well but they opened it up after that. Not great for Sands but it was his first appearance so hopefully it was just rust. He should just end up as a mid leverage guy with Gomez and Morris pitching later in the game.

COL: Another day another bad outing for Jimmy Herget. He was charged with three runs in the 6th but managed to get two outs. He is a guy who should be cut and his value is getting so low they might not be able to trade him. Victor Vodnik gave up two runs in the 7th. He has been pretty bad this year as well. Romano remains the only guy who you should even consider rostering here and he is the closer.

HOU: They got blown out but used Enyel De Los Santos and Bryan King. Both guys were charged with two runs. Clearly King did not resolve his issues yet and he really shouldn't be rostered. Okert is the best choice for holds in this bullpen and they have Abreu who is pitching later as well. Hader is the closer but they really could use a high leverage right hander.

CWS: The game was close enough early that they used Hicks, Newcomb, and Taylor. All three guys walked batters but no one allowed any runs. It had been a couple days since Taylor who picked up a hold and Newcomb who got the win had pitched so it wasn't surprising to see them in the game. Seranthony Domínguez pitched the 9th and allowed a hit. Another team that we are waiting to see if they make a move. They need bullpen help and a true closer would be huge. Taylor is the sort of closer here but they really use multiple guys in the 9th.

STL: With the game tied in the 7th they went with Luis Gastelum, Ryne Stanek, and George Soriano to get to the 10th. None of them allowed any runs and Stanek was perfect in his inning. This is what it could look like if ROB is moved though Stanek should be as well. Matt Svanson allowed the ghost runner to score and put two more on that would score as well. He continues to be pretty horrible this season. Justin Bruihl got out of the inning but allowed two of Svanson's runs to score. Savnson took the loss.

CIN: Pierce Johnson pitched the 7th with the game tied. Tejay Antone got a couple quick outs but allowed a couple singles in the 8th and was pulled for Brock Burke. He got out of the 8th and pitched a perfect 9th picking up the win. With a 5-2 lead in the 10th they went with Julian Garcia who allowed the ghost runner to score but picked up the save. No Pagan is interesting as he had warmed up in in the game. Keep an eye out to see if something is up. I would expect this bullpen to lose some of its guys at the deadline but well have to see who is left. Antone seems like the best option to close if Pagan is moved but he only got one save when Pagan was out before.

TEX: Robby Ahlstrom got three outs in the 6th with a couple on to start and picked up a hold. Tyler Alexander started the 7th with a 3-1 lead and got an out while allowing a couple guys to reach. They brought in Cole Winn who allowed a three run homer and a solo homer that made it 5-3. Both guys were charged with two runs and Winn got a loss and blown save. Ben Peoples pitched the 8th and Peyton Gray pitched the 9th allowing a run. Latz and Junis are the guys to roster for saves and holds and they really need someone to step up and give them innings in the 6th and 7th.

SEA: Speier got an out in the 6th and pitched the 7th. He picked up a win. Eduard Bazardo pitched the 8th and allowed a homer that cut the lead to 5-4. He picked up hold number 20 on the season. With a 6-4 lead in the 9th Andrés Muñoz struck out the side. Muñoz is back to being a stud and this team needs bullpen help at the deadline. If they struggle this week would they put Munoz on the market?

LAA: Samy Natera Jr. pitched the 6th, Chase Silseth pitched the 7th, and Ryan Zeferjahn pitched the 8th. All of them allowed a runner to reach but none of them allowed a run. They all picked up holds. In the 9th they went with Sam Bachman for the first time this week. He got an out and walked a couple guys before they pulled him for Mitch Farris. Farris allowed both Bachman's runs to score but got the last two outs and picked up a save. Zef did face the top of the order in the 8th so I still think him and Yates are the guys here for saves. Yates had pitched back to back days. I don't understand the Bachman usage this week and it really seems like something might be up with him. Stay tuned to see what things look like after the deadline and with Joyce on the way back.
